Tanaka a) rushed the game and b) started taking player feedback too late in the game's development to correct his vision (SE's secretive policy bit him in the ass). That, in my opinion, is what doomed him. Not his grand vision, especially the post-feedback grand vision.
It's all irrelevant now, but I fear people are going to take it the wrong way and try to make it so this new "vision" is as far from Tanaka's vision as possible. In some cases that's a good thing, in some cases it is not. There is no middleground it seems.
