But the article i saw was about how he was a community organizer and he was dissappointed in it because he felt that organizing from the bottom up can't just be relied upon without direct interaction from politicians. He was frustrated with having his efforts as community orgaziner fail and felt that if he were to interact with the source *policy making* he could more effectively fix the problems he could not fix as a organizer.

The policy that guided the community organizing as a very anti-political one, meaning: one that treated politicians and politics at arms-length.

So when you say architecture and not a leader, i remember this. Because i think of community organizing as precisely a work of architecture: building of alliances, movements, and crystalizing of interests. Meanwhile, while leadership does involve these previous qualities, it also requires confrontation and outmaneuring of adveseries.

Just to tie my previous posts together, I do not think there is currently a successor to Obama, as Lyndon Johnson was for Kennedy, to pick up the pieces of his administration and finish what was started (the Civil Rights Act being the definitive example). The two parties are simply too polarized and argumentative to pursue Obama policies under a different administration; indeed, should the next President be a Republican, a great deal of time would likely be spent undoing everything.

The community organizer analogy is an intriguing one, since he is indeed behaving in this Presidency with all of the faculties required to accomplish his goals, except without any teeth to strong-arm his policy through Congress. I think his Presidency will be defined as weak or failed, as LBJ's was, but I believe the next liberal President (should one be elected) should look to Obama as an example of both what and what not to do as the chief executive.

In some instances, like foreign policy and security, things would be taken further.

Obama spent some time making things the Bush administration did regarding security that were controversial into bipartisan consensus. Take for example sovereign inmunity, secrecy and torture. In the case of torture, he didn't make it bipartisan per se, but he helped make it so going back to a policy of torture has no real consequence.

I feel pretty amateur in my opinions, honestly. I like to use these threads as sounding boards since Kuya and I are so often in agreement with one another and I don't have anyone with whom I can discuss politics in real life unless they ask me to clarify some current event for them. As long as I'm not an armchair political analyst or lumped in with the GD politic posters, I'm happy.

On a tangental point, I'm interested to see what happens around 2030, when our generation is in its 40s and the Baby Boomers have left or are leaving. We're generally more liberal and socially aware than our parents. Will we be the same as the generation before us, or will politics adapt to our ideology? The cynical side of me says the former, but I'm honestly not sure. Anyway, back to reading this.

Me too. Our generation has its share of conservative loyalists which will surely dampen the triumph of being free of the baby boomers.

He says the baby boomers (in england, where this guy is from) inherited a society with free education open to all social classes, universal healthcare, unprecedented civil liberty, etc., and proceeded to trash it for their children by abolishing many of those freedoms and impoverishing them with debt. The Baby Boomers: whiny, narcissistic, self-indulgent people with a simple philosophy: "Gimme that! It's mine!" These people were given everything, everything was handed to them, and they took it all, sold it all; sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and they stayed loaded for twenty years and had a free ride. But now they're staring down the barrel of middle-age burnout, and they don't like it. They don't like it, so they've become self-righteous, and they wanna make things hard for young people. It's in their slogans, it's in their rhetoric: "No pain, no gain," "Just do it," "Life is short, play hard," "Shit happens, deal with it," "Get a life." These people went from "Do your own thing" to "Just say no!" They went from "Love is all you need" to "Whoever winds up with the most toys, wins", and they went from cocaine to Rogaine. And you know something? They're still counting grams, only now it's fat grams. And the worst of it is we have to watch the commercials on TV for Levi's loose-fitting jeans and fat-ass Docker pants because these degenerate, yuppie, Boomer cocksuckers couldn't keep their hands off the croissants and the Häägen-Dasz and their big fat asses have spread all over and they have to wear fat-ass Docker pants. Fuck these Boomers, fuck these yuppies... and fuck everyone, now that I think of it.
