Oh yeah for sure but weren't you saying our generation is generally more socially aware than that of our parents? And if not then it isn't it hypocritical for previous generations to criticize us as if their shit doesn't stink?

I acknowledge the dichotomy between my two statements: we're more socially aware and active (and that is in large part due to our status as the first generation to reach adolescence with the internet and worldwide communication easily available), but Jersey Shore is still a top-rated television show and many are virtually illiterate when they type or text online. I think generational loathing is a trademark of American life, especially for millenials since we're going to statistically be worse off in late adulthood than Gen X or the Boomers. They're going to hate us, we'll hate them, and I'm terrified that we'll grow up to be just like them anyway.

Though I imagine that one could.make the argument (though this is purely observational and not at all backed up by empirical sociological evidence, though it may exist) that the vast polarization in American politics over the last half-decade or so is in part due to Generation X entering middle-age and beginning to usurp the Boomers who are well into Social Security age, as well as the millenials hitting young adulthood.

I think if you're going to be talking about vast swathes of the human population like that it becomes unrealistic to expect an average intelligence significantly greater than that of a typical mollusk. Like yeah you can point out the shitty entertainment of the day but it's dubious to say that nowadays we're more ignoble or brutish or atavistic than previous generations just because we listen to Lady GaGa and watch Jersey Shore. After all, every generation has its fair share of vacuous, insignificant art, even the generations that produced people like Plato or Michaelangelo or Chaucer or Mozart or Chopin or Conrad or Huxley (especially these generations, in fact).

It was just an anecdotal example, but yes, each generation has its fools and it is hypocritical to dismiss us as wholly vapid.

The Baby Boomers: whiny, narcissistic, self-indulgent people with a simple philosophy: "Gimme that! It's mine!" These people were given everything, everything was handed to them, and they took it all, sold it all; sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and they stayed loaded for twenty years and had a free ride. But now they're staring down the barrel of middle-age burnout, and they don't like it. They don't like it, so they've become self-righteous, and they wanna make things hard for young people. They tell em abstain from sex, say no to drugs. As for rock 'n' roll, they sold that for television commercials a long time ago so they can buy pasta machines and StairMasters and soybean futures. You know something? They're cold, bloodless people. It's in their slogans, it's in their rhetoric: "No pain, no gain," "Just do it," "Life is short, play hard," "Shit happens, deal with it," "Get a life." These people went from "Do your own thing" to "Just say no!" They went from "Love is all you need" to "Whoever winds up with the most toys, wins", and they went from cocaine to Rogaine. And you know something? They're still counting grams, only now it's fat grams. And the worst of it is we have to watch the commercials on TV for Levi's loose-fitting jeans and fat-ass Docker pants because these degenerate, yuppie, Boomer cocksuckers couldn't keep their hands off the croissants and the Häägen-Dasz and their big fat asses have spread all over and they have to wear fat-ass Docker pants. Fuck these Boomers, fuck these yuppies... and fuck everyone, now that I think of it.

Also, we remember things like Chopin and Plato and Brahams and Michelangelo because they were the masters - there was plenty of garbage back around in those days too.
