Saying you don't know when you do is the same as refusing to answer.
Giving a negative answer is the same as not giving an answer, got it.
waaaaaaait, that doesn't make sense at all
This was covered in the video: don't give a negative answer. Don't answer.
How about an adjective answer if he persists?
"Not too fast, hopefully."
If he persists just stop answering. You do not need to and are not required to talk to the police.
I love all you guys with the whole "if you're not guilty you have nothing to hide" attitude. It's people like you who are most likely to become victims of the system. Have fun with that.
Officer > "do you know how fast you were going son?
Driver > "not fast enough if you were able to catch upto me"
You guys should try it out sometime
Spoiler: show
Has anyone tried to use ASL and see what the cop does?
Depends on the offense, for ASL it would probably not change anything.
Officers always carry field logs on them (which are just notebooks), so you would communicate via pen and paper instead of talking.
As for other languages, that gets tricky. For serious offenses we get translators over the phone, or over the radio. Not so serious offenses, probably just let them go.
Mmm, didnt think about the writing part.. Maybe fake not being able to write lol. Though im sure DLs are rquired to state such things, so the officer would just have to request to see the DL, and gameover. Would be funny to see how the international DL would play out though.
He doesn't have to be able to communicate with you to cite you or arrest you.
sorry jmcgarrell, didn't mean to hurt your feelbads
was just making a joke, my father was an officer for a while and he's one of the smartest people I know.
The point about speeding is that 95% of the time they've got you on radar - your answers are irrelevant for the "facts" portion of the ticket.
The key in that situation is the "getting off easy" portion, which is up to the whim of the officer. He doesn't need your confession, he's just doing the script. If you try to fuck up his script by not answering or whatever, it doesn't make his day happier or his job easier or his disposition to you more pleasant, and those are the things you need for leniency.
Now, if you're prepared to fight the radar in court if you get a ticket and don't want to "admit" to the crime, great, be silent or whatever. But most of the time you're done for at that moment unless he gives you a break. Tyche's "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention" is fine, and then a sincere "if you could just give me a warning I'd really appreciate it" is your best shot.
For real crimes though, keep your fucking mouth shut, refuse any search request, ask for a lawyer if you're in custody, and assume everything the cop says is a lie.
