MP3 players

Does anyone still even have devices that only play music? I assume by now everyone but me just does it on their phone or through something else that doesnt just do that.

Regardless, what do you use for music whether it be phone, ipod, whatever.

So my ipod died today. I dont know how or what from because apple's troubleshooting techniques start and end with plugging it in to see if it's charged. I dont think the battery died because usually when batteries die they have just hold low power and I was still getting like 8 hours of constant use without charging easily.

Guess I'm going to have to look around for a new mp3 player. Definitely dont want to buy an apple product unless I can get it cheap like I did this one.

My first thought when I realized I'd have to do research was "Sigh, might as well ask other people what they use to play their music" and then I realized that'd be worthless because most people now days probably use their phones, right? So I sighed again and thought "Well maybe it's time to upgrade from my stoneage phone and get something like a droid" so I looked into it and it'd cost me $120 for a shitty droid and $150 for a really awesome one actually. I have no problem paying $150 for a new phone, but it's the $30/mo mandatory data plan that I cant justify. I can easily say $150 is the investiture for a new nicer mp3 player that just also happens to make phone calls. I dont really care about email, internet, texting, and shit so I wouldnt use the data plan and I dont want to pay $30 more per month for something I'm not going to use.

I tried calling a service rep to see if I could get them to sell it to me without the data package, but they just wont do it. Although I wouldnt use anything that would be covered under the plan they just wont let me; unless there's something I dont know, some string I can pull or something they dont advertise I can say I want to do that.

So far I've only really looked at ZUNES because they're the anti-iPod so I have heard.

When the fuck did MP3 players become expensive? My last ipod (the one that just died after like 2-3 years) was $80 for a 30GB iPod video. I dont even care about the video, I just want mp3 playback. Why am I seeing prices of like $200+ for 32GB?

At this rate it'd be cheaper for me to just buy the $150 Droid X + $30/mo for a year than to buy a new mp3 player

Actually, I have found some 30ish GB players for around $120-160 that look pretty decent. But it just seems like everything is so unnecessarily expensive when all I want it to do is play mp3s.

i have a creative zen which is a couple of years old, has flash type memory, and it's easy enough to load music on to

That's probably somethign I should consider. If these things have expandable memory I could buy the cheapest 4GB version or something and use a 32GB stick lying around.

I have an 8GB zune that survived being frozen to the road and presumably run over. Not sure how expensive the bigger models are though.

Cowon and Archos make good devices. Samsung made a pretty decent device a couple years back(the YPP3). BY far the best mp3 players(sound wise) are the Sony series with Cowon a close 2nd. Either of them aren't cheap and the Sony players lack expansion capabilities.

I loved my Sansa e260 until I got a phone that could handle music.

Rockbox it and it's fucking boss, and cheap ($30). Internal rechargeable battery that lasts a good 25-30 hours too.

edit: correction, 150gb. typo!

i had a touch but i traded it because i don't like fucking with a touchscreen while i drive. i'm way too ADD with music to be using a touchscreen that often behind the wheel. The basic clickwheel does just fine and i can do that without looking.
