FFXI POL suddenly not loading

Yesterday POL/FFXI was working just fine, only change to my PC since I last had it running was one Windows update (Defender update, KB915597, Win7 64).

Now when I try to launch POL from either Windower or directly without it I get absolutely nothing, just doesn't load. I can see POL.exe in Task Manager, but it doesn't show at all.

Tried running System Restore to a few days back and still have the same problem.

Any suggestions to fix this besides reinstall FFXI/format PC? I will go for one of those two if all else fails, but would like a faster solution if at all possible.

I should mention I also tried updating Catalyst drivers to 11.1 after System Restore with similar results. Had 10.8 installed, since that's the only Catalyst version that doesn't crash POL for me.

I've had an issue before on a laptop where POL wouldn't load from Windower. I could get it to load normally without Windower though.

I fixed it once by going through a bunch of restore points, but the other time I had to swallow a reformat.

Ah, thanks for the reply/link, I'll try some of the suggestions there, although doubtful I'll get it fixed since my problem is present even without using Windower to launch POL.
I'll probably try reinstalling today, then format if that doesn't work.
