Clapping for a movie is like saying "compliments to the chef" after a can of soup. And that solidarity bullshit? Come on, just because other people like 'soup' doesn't mean they should start clapping and whooping obnoxiously. A) It does immediately pull you out of the movie. B) Clapping/cheering IS annoying even in legit circumstances, and C) with all the after credits scenes and shit, the movie is seldom actually fucking over when people start going WHOOOO CLAPPY CLAP.

No, it's not. There is nothing exceptional about a can of soup. There is something exceptional about seeing a Chris Nolan film for the first time.

The only time I've experienced actual applause after a movie was midnight Return of the King, which I was completely fine with. I don't think anyone was expecting outtakes or an extra scene after the credits roll. Every other time there's been clapping, it's been one or two pockets of people, died out quickly, and did not affect me in the slightest.

Applause IS a sign of appreciation, and no one in the theater benefits from it, except for the lame fuckwads who think they are obligated to clap in case someone doubts they liked the movie. It is an exercise in futility. Last time I heard clapping in the theater was at the midnight viewing of Snakes on a Plane when the "Mothafuckin' snakes" line was spoke. Then again the whole theater burst out in cheer at it.

It's pretty much the reason I'm not inviting one of my friends to the movie when I go. He claps at EVERYTHING.

I think for those of us who get annoyed with clapping at the end of a movie it comes down to being cynical and egotistical. I don't want to speak for anybody else, but I'm very certain what annoys me is sharing space with those people who clapped. I can't help but think of them as boring, simple-minded, and unimaginative people who just don't belong in the same place as me trying to enjoy the art that I'm enjoying. Plus the obvious, "you're taking me out of my movie experience to let me know that you enjoyed this movie"

I just think it's a habit shared by stupid people.

Not that I agree with clapping, but Idk why this is hard for some people to understand. That movie experience you guys keep talking about, is what other people are having when they clap. They're getting all psyched up and enjoying that experience with a full theatre of other people enjoying the same goddamn thing. Cheering and having fun and carrying on and shit is part of the movie experience for a lot of people, especially at a midnight or marathon showing. I'm not sure how clapping after a movie is over is ruining any experience at all, unless you're all about the music playing during the credits.

That said, I personally am not a clapper, since noone that made the movie will be there to appreciate the applause.
