My girlfriends' laptop just died, the power port is damaged and there is no way to charge it/turn it on. What is the easiest/cheapest way to get the data off the hard drive? I can easily get the hdd out of the system, but no idea what to do after that.

Is anyone else having issues with justin/twitch.tv not working on Firefox? All I get is a black screen, everything's allowed in NoScript, SWF is up to date, not really sure what I'm missing here. Works fine in Chrome.

Kind of an annoying scenario connecting my monitor, PC and consoles that I was afraid I'd run into eventually.

The monitor has VGA, DVI and Displayport. The consoles are both HDMI, just video, with the audio separated out to PC speakers. Previously consoles used an HDMI-to-DVI adapter. The PC is just the motherboard's video ports for now until I buy a video card and has VGA, DVI and HDMI. Ideally I want to be able to connect the PC and a console at the same time so I can swap between without having them all on the DVI port. Hoping to find a workable solution now on the chance that whatever video card I'll have doesn't have displayport.

What do you guys think I should do? I looked into an HDMI-to-DP adapter, but most accounts seem to say those only work from a DP source to a monitor with HDMI and not the reverse, unless you buy a pricey converter box. Would DVI-to-Displayport work for connecting the PC? Should I just use VGA between the monitor and PC until I have an actual video card? Actual product links would be really appreciated if you have'em.

If you just want something temporary until you get a video card, vga is not a terrible option, and will cost you nothing, assuming you haven't thrown away all your vga cables.

I'm considering it, but I'd have to buy a new cable regardless since I don't have anything long enough now. Figured if I have to buy, I may as well try to figure out how to workaround this now instead of waiting.

So I'm currently sitting on an i7-950 with a Corsair H50 cooler...my PC is largely used for video streaming/recording, and I'm looking for a bit more punch. Would I be better served at trying to get my 950 up to 4-4.2ghz, or just saving up for a stock 3770k? If the former, should the H50 be sufficient, or should I look into an H80?

H50 will probably struggle to get 4+, 3.8GHz sure but depending on your CPU 4.2 might be hard. 3770k even paired with a H50 or 212 EVO could get 4.4GHz (4.5-4.6 with a good cpu). What OC do you have on the 950 atm?

My 950 is still at stock speed currently. I know there's better options than the H series but I have an Antec 200 case and relatively high-profile memory so fitting something like a NH-D14 is out.

Try OCing to 3.8GHz and see if you still need more performance (or however high you can safely get it to, I managed to get my 920 to 3.8 with a budget MB and H50).

I had a h-50 that came with my cpu upgraded to a h-80 and mounted to outside of case now running at 4.3 with HT and temps don't go past 70. You can always use the H-80 for whatever cpu but the h-50 definitely should be upgraded.

3.8 would definitely be sufficient. When OC'ing an i7, are you supposed to turn Turbo Boost off?

I've been trying to read through a few OC guides before I jump in, but all of the ones I'm finding for my specific board/CPU setup are threads that trail off right before the walkthrough gets posted or important question gets answered lol...one think I was a little confused on, when I up my FSB speed, do I need to manually adjust the DRAM frequency as well to make sure it still lines up with the correct end speed, or is that something that happens automatically after I up the base clock?

You'll have to see what happens, what MB do you have? Mine told me the RAM freq in the same menu so I just kept that at safe levels after adjust Bclk, I don't actually remember messing around with FSB though I could just be remembering things wrong. If you can't find any for your specific MB then try and look for general OCing guides like this, or OCing guides for same manufacturer but different board as BIOS are often similar if not the same.

I have a Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3, it seems pretty straightforward BIOS-wise, I can't imagine it's too drastically different from others.

The DNS i was using (google I think) seems to have gone down just now.(Sandy?) Does anyone know any other good ones i can swap to that were unaffected by the storm? I usually don't care about having a dns set but a few weeks ago i got randomly blocked from a few sites since some fool set something somewhere to use a public one that thinks 4chan/etc is the devil's hackware.
