The absolute best thing you can do to improve FFXI performance is get an SSD. The game SHREDS hard drives pulling model data.

Yes, do this. Running FFXI off of an SSD is wonderful.

We have an old as dirt switch in our office(D-Link DES-1226G). This morning I came in and it was totally hosed. Everything downstream had no connectivity and the switch was completely lit up. I kid you not every single light was on. There was also a high pitched noise coming from it. Power cycling it did nothing so I figured it was done for and just installed a new switch.

Here's the thing though. I took the old switch to my desk and hooked it into my setup, and now it appears to be working fine. What gives? I thought this thing was busted and now it isn't, but I can't figure out what I'm doing differently or why it went haywire in the first place. Does anyone have any insight to offer on this one?

What's the easiest way to diagnose connection problems? Just installed windows 8 for a friend but now his internet keeps dropping out. Went home for the night but had him download the new drivers, reset modem/router but still no avail.

Assuming they're separate devices, try connecting to the modem directly. If this problem doesn't reoccur, there's something wrong with the router.

If the problem does reoccur, try using a different device and see if it also disconnects. If it does, there's either something wrong with the modem or your connection.

If the problem doesn't reoccur on the separate device, there is something wrong with the computer's configuration.

Another question, ended up getting a .img from a friend of PC doctor but can't find a good program to make a bootable USB from that. Any suggestions?

    Edit:

Tried Win32 Image Write but every time after it writes the program to the USB and try booting from it windows tells me there's no boot sector. I also plug it in somewhere it asks to format it before using it.

Try unetbootin. I've only ever used it for ISOs, but it supports img so it's worth a shot.

I think the .img my friend gave me was corrupt, nothing worked at all. On a side note though I picked up my friends pc (different friend) and brought it to my house to check for issues. Went ahead and cleared the network drivers that were there and reinstalled them to rule that out as an issue. I was able to install wow for him and play for a good hour or so with no problems, so I was happy. Just plugged in his PC to double check before I gave it back to him and now it's back at the problem "Checking for updates" before it actually loads the launcher...

I've gone through numerous threads on the official forums and posts from blues but nothing is working. Deleted battle.net tools folder, wtf folder, all the folders that have been suggested. Made the second logon automatic. Just not sure what is going on here, it was working then I turned the PC off, turned it on the next day and bam not working again. Flash player also up to date. This is a fresh windows 8 install with an actual retail disc.

He was having this issue at his house, different network and cable. But yes. It just worked flawlessly one day then not the next, very odd. Everything else on the on the internet works.

To be honest I haven't taken a good look at your issue. When I get a chance to sit down and look at it I'll come up with a better solution for you.

Its NP. Ive drown myself in threads on the OF about this. I'm gonna borrow some hardware diagnosis tools from work to rule that out as a possibility, so well see later tonight if that is an issue.

Dumb question but is it the same ISP as you?

I've had alot of problems with my ISP for FFXI, their DNS was blocking Square's site for usueless reasons, so when i went to pol it was like connecting and jamming there

What i can tell you is try to use google's dns on his pc which is 8.8.8.8 and see if it works

Different ISPs. Can try the different DNS when I get home, at work atm. But ran tests on his hardware and everything is fine... wow on my pc installs and updates with no hitch. I even went ahead and uninstalled wow and tried to reinstall, and yep same problem.

I didn't know where to post this in the gaming section, so figured it was a little safer to post here.

Anyone try one of thos PowerA Fusion controllers for xbox or PS3? I can pick one up for $60, and was wondering if its worth it for FPS games?

I might... just might have figured it out. Went into internet explorer options and the option to dial a connection when no network is detected was checked... unchecked it and downloading now. We'll see if it stays working now lol

    Greetings fellow BGers!

    Office related question:

My boss wants to throw up a presentation on the wall on a board meeting on wednesday, of course he doesn't tell me this much time in advance.
I have ordered a Logitech R700 presenter ( http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/produc...presenter-r700 ). But his documents are in .pdf format.
To my (on this topic extremely limited knowledge), there's no good way to use these presenters with .pdf documents, so I turn to the oracles in BG, is there any (free) pdf reader software that works well with presenters such as this one, and if not, any recommended (free) software to convert the .pdf to .ppt(x) so I can throw it up in a powerpoint slide instead? (I might be able to get hold of the original documents they pushed into the .pdf file in time to just push them into ppt slides, but I doubt it, and need to find contingencies).

I guess maybe as a last resort you could take screenshots of each page and make a slideshow with those, but I don't have a "real" answer.

edit: I just looked in acrobat pro 11 and it has a save as powerpoint option, if you have that handy (or torrent it).

Managed to borrow a company copy of Acrobat Pro as you suggested, seems it uses a OCR solution to do it, and it didn't manage to cope with the special Norwegian characters alas. I will try to retrieve the source files from "around" or do the screenshot version I guess, thanks :D
