I'm not sure if this is still relevant to you but I actually just did this last night, I stumbled on a guide that Iresire put on his lj:
    http://irethesire.livejournal.com/5508.html

I followed those instructions and did a file check and was good to go, almost. My problem now is that I can't get my PS2 controller to work with FFXI. I've never had problems before but just recently reinstalled Windows (same version as before, 7 x64) and now I can't get anything to work with this controller in FFXI pad config. I used XBCD and got my 360 controller working but I prefer the PS2 after 7 years of using it. I'm using a cheap USB converter and never had to install drivers before, is it possible I need to get an updated driver for it?

What did you expect the Mac to do so differently than Windows?

Some quick free suggestions from the App Store - MPlayerX (if you don't like VLC or want an alternate), Textwrangler (BBEdit Lite in another life) for a more capable text editor (like if you'd use Notepad++ on Windows), Stuffit Expander as you may need it - .hqx and .bin were the common compressed formats on Mac prior to OS X supporting .zip natively, and you still run across files that use it.

I also have Adium as a chat client (plenty of options, I just happen to use it). Then a few more free media programs (Inkscape, Gimp, Blender, Sketchbook, etc) just 'cause.

But...yeah. Still just a computer. Lot of applications have a Mac version. Was there something you were looking for that might require an alternative?

Can I use an app like Text-Plus to text people from a smartphone that has no service? All it takes is a data connection which I could use wifi for afaik. I'm not in this scenario, but I'm just curious if it is possible. Rooted Droid 1 btw

Having trouble with my monitor turning on. It turns on for about a half second (showing whatever it should be displaying), turns blank, then flashes grey with a couple thin vertical colored lines every now and then. It's taken progressively longer and longer to get it to turn on normally. Right now it's not turning on and it's been 4 or so hours and counting. It's a DCL22A 22" widescreen by Sceptre. Quick google search mentioned cheap or faulty capacitors, but would like a definite idea before I go find a soldering gun and try fixing something that might not even be the problem.

Edit: If it's easier to get a new one, thinking about one of these two monitors, but not sure if the IPS screen is worth the extra 30.

IPS monitor is awsome but it's mostly for graphics design for the extra light

If you use your PC for normal gaming and normal actions go with the 179 one

My friend got a new laptop and is getting major lag in random areas of FFXI. I do not know all the specs of the laptop, but it has a Nvidia GeForce GT 425M graphics card on Windows 7 64-bit. We tried updating to the newest driver but now POL crashes immediately. Does anyone know of a driver that works?

IPS is better for color range/accuracy and viewing angle. TN tend to have lower response times (and cost).

IMO, an extra $30 for IPS is worth it. It's not that big a price premium, compared to what the jump to IPS can cost. Of course, you can have really good TN, and crummy IPS too. I don't have hands-on with either of those actual monitors - most of what I have are Dell or HP IPS screens.

Anybody have any experience with hooking up a 3.5inch HDD to an old fat model PS3 ? I googled around a little but couldn't find anything recent or any HDD enclosure recommendations and I want to know about reliability or if additional power supplies are needed.

I don't have the exact number but I remember that FFXI had problems with NVIDIA card, so make sure you search for a driver that is made for FFXI

Friend of mine just bought a refurbished samsung np-q430 laptop from ebay. Since getting it, every full-screen application has had the keyboard lock up and act weird. Pressing any letter/symbol key will just insert numbers instead of whatever the key is, but pressing the same key gets a different number each time (just cycles through 0-9, in order). Holding control will make it work (ctrl+WASD makes him move in games, etc.), but obviously would become annoying having to do it for very long. What in the fuck is going on and how is it fixed?

When I had that problem it was my antivirus software that would randomly go nuts in certain areas. Tell him to turn off his antivirus when he's playing to see if that helps the problem.

A cheapo USB number pad can be anywhere from $5-$20.
