I got Win7 installed and running on this HP m8530f I have, only thing not working is the freakin embedded LAN port.
I thought it might have something to do with the "nForce System Management Controller" (pci ven_10de&dev_0753&subsys_2a6e103c) since that was the only thing with an exclamation mark in the device manager but I got some drivers for that and the LAN port is still not working.

The motherboard is M2N78-LA (Viola), and the LAN Chip is Realtek RTL8211B-GR
    Specs
Can i get any help here? The leds are lighting up when I plug an ethernet cord in so I know it's not dead...

just stabbing in the dark since there hasn't been anything on this yet, but is that your only option to get online with that machine? Is wireless possible? I mean the first things that I'd try are the manufacturer's drivers and then windows update to fill in any gaps, especially if this is an old machine that wasn't initially running 7 when the drivers were released. In my experience Windows Update with Windows 7 has been extremely good about adapting older hardware, but I'd presume any drivers from HP would be a better idea first.

Drivers on HP site is only for vista, i tried to use them and it gave me an error. I tried tethering with my android phone and connect to windows update but it wasnt happening. Im probably gonna have to buy a PCIe LAN or Wireless card. But I was hoping that was the last resort

My PC makes these "crackling/whirling" noises when ever I open programs or load something. I'm assuming this is the HDD making that sound? Everything in my PC is relatively new, bought most of it within the last year except my 2 HDD's which I moved over from my old PC. I recently bought a new HDD in anticipation that my old ones would fail; the new one is currently installed but I haven't put anything on it.

My HDD's are definitely the weakest part of my PC, they are probably about 6 or 7 years old. Do these noises mean it is slowly dying? The sound is identical to the ones my crappy work PC makes. I notice a huge bottleneck when I open up any program or load data but start-up isn't horribly slow.

So assuming that I should replace these things, how do I go about moving Windows 7 over to the new HDD?

Anyone have a recommendation on software to just put basic videos together? The windows live movie maker for 7 is lame, and for some reason the .wmv files it puts out don't get accepted by youtube. That seems to be the only format it will let me save it in.

Unless something has changed since March-ish, Windows Live Movie Maker published my videos to youtube just fine. There's an option to publish directly to youtube, are you using that?

No. I have been bringing the files on my thumb-drive to work. My connection at home where I actually make/record the videos is not good for uploading. It uploaded the first of my 3 movies just fine on the first try. But the other two, which are the same format always seem to get rejected when I upload them.

7 at home, XP at work if that makes any difference.

any luck with compatibility settings for the drivers or googling around for guides about people with your same PC upgrading to 7? Having to buy something new for hardware that probably isn't broken sounds shitty, but network interface cards are also incredibly cheap so I guess it's not so bad if it's less of a pain in the ass.

Shouldn't be any difference between the two operating systems. Not sure what the reason would be if they are encoded the same way. Is it a size issue?

I don't think the operating systems are the problem, but that Movie Maker changes between them. See if something strikes you on these lists:

I turned off UAC in Vista, but now every time I reboot, I get the "UAC is not active" message. Any way to get rid of that? I reboot fairly often, so it gets annoying.

Is there a way to save bookmarks to Google/Gmail/something Google related so that I can access them between computers? I find myself on the web split between computers now a lot more, and I'm not able to bookmark anything on the other PC so I need a way to access all of my home PCs bookmarks on my work PC.

Install Firefox to a flash drive and import your bookmarks to it? Firefox sync maybe? (Never used it, don't actually know what it does >.>; Think Chrome can also save your bookmarks to your Google account and have them accessible from another computer with Chrome.

Yeah, Chrome and Firefox both have integrated sync options. Firefox Sync and Chrome

If you can't do that, either should also be able to export your bookmarks to an html file, and you could attach that to an email to yourself or something.

Those both sound good, but unfortunately I guess I was looking for something like cloud bookmarks (?_?) that would only be accessible if someone was signed in to my Google acount. That sounds more like it will just important my bookmarks over to this computer when I choose to sync it.

If I chose to put FF/Chrome on a flash drive and launched from my USB opposed to the work PCs (all of them have IE/FF/Chrome already installed) would the browser history go to my flash drive's browser history or would it go to both the PC and flash drive history? Only reason I ask is the guys here like to keep history/cookies cleared out off the PCs, so if I'm going to ultimately have to clear it from both I might as well just email myself the urls and just launch them from there and clear it at the end of the day.

Maybe look into Portable Apps for putting it on the USB key then. The Firefox Portable is tweaked to not write personal data to the HDD (in the FAQ).

Surprised no one mentioned xmarks. It's still another option like Firefox Sync, so not exactly what you seem to want, but it's also browser-independent. You install it as an extension in whatever browser and computer you want to sync and it keeps them all updated, plus it lets you setup profiles of bookmarks in case you don't want just one set of them. You can manage them once you've uploaded your bookmarks from their site, too.

As for something more what you're looking for, have you googled "google bookmarks" yet? lol They have a service for exactly that.

If I wanted to lower my cable modem's upstream power level would I want to connect it to an end with a higher or lower db loss? For instance, if I connected it to a DC tap, would I want to connect my modem to the out end (1 db loss) or the tap end (6~ db loss)?
