As soon as he teleports people away, the people who stay are detained. And if someone is on the pillar and you are next to the pillar you will be killed by the other's detainment.

What does RNG have to do with how fast your armor levels up? Everything gives you the same EXP. It doesn't take long relative to guns because armor gains regardless of what you're doing.

Detain only does a thing if you're moving, being next to someone doesn't matter. If it did, the cheese strategy on Templar would have never worked.

Whenever I'm on the outside group for Atheon I'm almost always standing next to someone when Detain comes out, the only way I'm dying is if I was jumping before the Detain came out.

There's a glitch when you get put into someone else's detain and you die when you shoot anythin . You'll get a killed by the architects or some shit. Its happened to me.
