Feels like a Noob Question: I played multi-player at level 5, got annihilated, which is much to be expected. Tried it again at level 8, still was by far the worst player on either team, got 0 kills and all my points were through territory acquisition, it seemed like I was getting one or two shot while it would take 4-5 shots to take out an opponent. I went through all of the single player campaign in Russia, did a little bit of the moon, and had Uncommon weapons. It seemed like other players had shields as well, which I didn't seem to have, although maybe that's just how I was interpreting the HUD.

I've never been great at FPS multiplayer, but this was a new low. Was it a requirement by Saturday to have elite weapons to be successful in the arena, or am I just that bad at this?
Remember, even if you do not go past level 8 all of ur skills can be still upgraded, some of the traits allow for higher defense, these pvp guys are also good at accurate headshots etc it depletes shields much faster. So need to take player skills and traits into consideration, Uncommon gear has a much higher defense rating too, not sure if that plays into it also. Also there are some favoured weapons in pvp that just rip through people much easier than others (damn you shingen).

yeah I wish they'd give a detailed breakdown of what does and does not factor in to the crucible matches

I personally would rather they wipe them and have everybody start fresh.
Well, their deal with Sony clearly favors PS players, so I dunno if I'd agree with that. I mean, PS players are getting access to missions for a whole year before Xbox players, right?

So it depends on which game mode you were playing. If you were just doing the normal crucible matches, then your level, armor, and weapon damage were all normalized. As Bungie said, those were matches of skill (you're essentially equal to your opponents). In the Iron Banner matches, your level, weapon damage, and armor rating actually mattered. Titans actually really shined in Iron Banner as a result of their beefed up armor.

As Takiwaki said, getting level 8 wasn't the end of the journey, but all the stats and abilities you unlocked past level 8 did matter. For instance, when you mention shield, I'm guessing you're referring to the glow that players sometimes had around them? If it was a hunter, that meant they had chain of woe (I think that's the name of the ability) which was if they killed an enemy with a headshot, they gained a boost. I think Warlocks had one as well which was a movement boost, right?

As far as the HUD, your health can be broken into two components -- your shield (the white bar which was the first two thirds) and your health (the red bar that was the bottom third). Shield recharges quickly, health slower. If you only take shield damage, you'll heal up quickly, but if you take HP damage, you probably need to hide. I think one of the confusing parts might have been that in multiplayer, when you're looking at another player's health, both bars are equal size. That's not the case though -- you have twice as much shield as you do health.

If you've played any Halo multiplayer before, Destiny's will feel very similar. It's a very different feel than say CoD multiplayer. Headshot damage is huge, and if you're only getting body shots, you're likely going to be taken out. Personally, I had a lot of times where I wouldn't get the first shot off, but because I would go for headshots, I'd end up killing the person before they killed me.

Some of the stats that people don't know about were strength, intelligence, and discipline. Personally, I relied heavily on my knife throwing, so I had capped strength. I don't know if it actually helped in PvP, but I felt like my knife respawned fairly quickly.

Another question is the damage boost on uncommon weapons. I don't know if that counted, but I could see it being a boost to the normalized damage, and going in at later levels, you people likely had more uncommon and upgraded weapons -- especially since we were capped at 8 and had plenty of time to hunt for good weapons.

Those Titans were no joke. Some players I would just rip through (maybe below level 8? IDR) Then some dudes I'd finish a clip and their shield would be almost finished. Not that I connected with every shot, but dang. Is it Titans in general or did these guys have the later upgrades maybe?

I didn't get around to testing it but the way I took it was that in a normal crucible match, any numbers don't matter but traits and things like +reload speed from armor would, as well as stats like discipline and strength that affect cooldown timers.

In iron banner your numbers from defense and weapon damage come into effect as well.

I could be wrong about that but that's how I see it. It could be no bonuses or stats from gear come into effect in a normal crucible match but I didn't time my grenade cooldown to see.

I notice further down the skill trees, there is an option to lock the build for a boost in dmg or defense (same for rare weapons), I wonder how worth it those boosts will be, Its really nice to be able to swap builds at any point.

I am not much of a pvper, but all in all I am very excited for the pve aspect.

I was always getting camped in my PVP matches, other group would hunker down in a corner at a sector and proceed to wait. Also noticed people holding down edges of the maps with scoped guns and wait for spawns.
I realize Playstation is getting the better deal, and not a single person on my 360 roster showed zero interest in the beta, which is abnormal as hell.

My thing is this: what's the point of giving level 9 & 10 weapons/gear as drop/rewards in a beta if they AREN'T going to let you carry them over at launch other then to show you what you can't have until then since they capped the exp level at 8?

Multiplayer as a Hunter is almost unfair with that proximity grenade thing. Shit's like a sexier claymore. Toss one at one entrance while you cap a, b, or c while you cover the opposite site.

The Beta was water wings, the full game is so much more
Bungie community manager Eric “Urk” Osborne took to NeoGAF to address discussion of the leak ( http://destinydb.info/ )and the number of destinations in the game.

“Destiny’s pretty big. It’s the biggest game we’ve ever made, by far, and we’re sort of known for making games you can play for months, years, and even decades if you’re a little bit dedicated,” he said.

“With Destiny, we’re looking to exceed what we’ve done before, not just in terms of scale – the Moon is our smallest destination – but in terms of scope and breadth of activities.”

Osborne said that’s “true for day one”, but that Bungie wants “Destiny to have super long legs”.

“If we’re fortunate enough to have you playing months after launch, you still find lots of compelling stuff to do,” he said.

“That will manifest itself in a myriad of ways, from straight up content to cool activities we’ve yet to show off.”

Osborne also said that Bungie was disappointed that it could only cater to competitive PvP players with post-launch support for the Halo series.

“We wanted to do better. So, Destiny is philosophically built support every type of player, and all modes with ongoing activities and events,” he said.

“We look at it quite a bit like television programming, as opposed to a singular film, as we had in the past.”

During beta, Bungie presented a range of content and did a lot of testing, Osborne added, but the full game will be a different beast indeed.

“Beta was water wings. Level 8 is nothing. You barely scratched the surface, and it seems like some folks had fun with what was there.

“If you did, good news. More soon,” he concluded.

I got lvl 12 armor and weapons in the alpha as drops. Didn't carry over to beta. Don't see how this is "proof" that beta progress will carry over to launch.

The whole level 8 cap thing was entirely misleading when it came to ability upgrades, i felt as a fresh level 8 titan i was somewhat under powered in crucible, however when you unlock upgrades like plasma grenade and aoe field from fist of havoc it makes for much more interesting gameplay. the real way for winning matches in crucible seemed to be getting your super as often as possible. or in the case of moon map getting one of those vehicles at the start.

The Destiny beta was played by over 4.6 million people, Activision announced.

To be exact, a total of 4,638,937 unique players participated. The beta began first on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on July 17, later opening up to Xbox One and Xbox 360, and ended on July 27.

“This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. “Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”
