Another way to dust your computer?

I was wondering if anyone knew of another way of cleaning out the dust from your PC without using compressed air. It works great, but I am allergic to dust so I often end up sick a day after cleaning out a PC. I was hoping someone out there would know another way to clean your PC without kicking up all the dust into the air and possibly making me sick. I've tried wearing masks with limited success. I also tried googling static free vacuums but I only found one and it was like $300. Any ideas would be appreciated.

friend of mine had your problem and regular masks weren't doing the job so he bought something like this and it worked very well. Not sure how much he's wasting on the filters, looked funny tho when cleaning it out <.<

Little vacuums like the one Seph posted should do it for ya.

Not sure I'm going to go that far. It would probably end up freaking out people every time I was asked to clean a PC lol.

Thanks for the replies. I cleaned out the family PC last night and today I feel like crap. I'm sick of this making me sick all the time.

Call me stupid, but is there a reason why you cannot dust a PC outside?

Have you ever blew out a really dirty PC, perhaps one that has came back from a customer in the field? Sometimes there is so much shit that blows out it goes everywhere, even with a high powered vacuum blower you still end up breathing some of it in. Even if it's your personal pc and a little dirty. the dust still sits in the air around the PC as you blow it out.

Dont wait for it to be caked. A good air purifier in your room will do a lot more for you than some micro vac.

Take it outside and change your shirt when your done.

Man up, cover your face and get to it outside. With the amount of expense you spend on some special-overpriced vac. You could just buy an electric air compressor. Then when you're done. Disconnect the hose and hook up a pressure blast nozzle, blow yourself off. And then go back inside... If you absolutely need a ventilator, then go get one as Senji mentioned.

I recommend putting a air purifier in the room you have the computer in. It helps a lot with slowing dust buildup inside a computer.

The reason why this wont work is allergies. Even being exposed to a little bit of dust for just a few seconds can end up making me sick. I've tried doing it outside, using masks, cleaning the PC more often, but it doesn't seem to make things any better.

My mother has chronic allergies to dust/mold/dander/etc. but she's still able to clean her house, etc. All she does is wear goggles/3M mask/gloves & she doesn't get affected by the dust.

If your shit is that severe I suggest on buying an industrial air purifier. Not the cheap ones you get for $30.00 bucks at Wally. Secondly, to prevent larger pieces of dust/hair/etc. that commonly get inside your computer. It sounds tacky, but wrapping the unit in a material like cheesecloth or thin netting will stop that. At the same time it won't mess with air flow induction into the case.

At the casino we work at when we blow out our machines (Basically computers with slot machine software on them) we leave them on and running throughout the cleaning process. The reason being we've had quite a few machines not come back up even though they were running perfectly fine before the blow out. Ever since I learned this and experienced it I've been using the same technique on my home computer without any damages or side affects.

Used dryer sheets also work really well for this, and they're non-static too. Just tuck them between the intake fan(s) and the fan grill on the case. All you have to do then is take a barely damp paper towel, wipe the outside of the case to remove the dust buildup like once every couple weeks, and every month or two change the dryer sheet.

    Agreed.

$40 for an air compressor and some open air and you're set. If you're keen on doing it inside, get a high quality mask ane wear a long sleeve t-shirt. Once you've cleaning the computer, wipe the surface.
