m11x would probably be my machine of choice, it's not completely gimped in favour of better battery life, has a decent screen, good warranty and customer support. Plus it's pretty cheap!

having a second battery wouldnt be a bad idea either <_<
Don't all batteries burn out eventually?
Macbook Pros have amazing battery life if you follow the instructions on battery charge/discharge. I would also suggest a Lenovo ThinkPad.
As an edit: Yes, all batteries eventually suffer enough chemical breakdown rendering them pretty much useless. However with proper charging and care, they can last for very long amounts of time.
Yes, but, certain batteries have longer lifetimes and stay stronger during that period of time. Also, as Korietsu said, it all depends on how well you take care of it. The best tip I can give is: If you just using your laptop at your desk and you have it plugged in all the time, take out your battery until you are actually going somewhere. It'll keep your laptop cooler and make your battery last longer.
Pretty sad that the new macbook air has shorter battery life
If you're thinking about getting a macbook, you may want to wait until thursday. It's rumored that Apple is gonna come out with a new line of macbook pros on Thursday with much better battery life (12hrs on 13", 10hrs on 15")

Claims 30 hours of battery life. Whatever you end up getting, you could just get an extra battery for it; should give you enough juice to get through the day.
HP's claiming 32 hours for their EliteBook, and Apple may be unveiling their new Macbook Pro tomorrow. I have to imagine that anyone who doesn't want to carry around the power cord would also balk at lugging around a spare battery btw.
