If you can gather a few family members or friends together you can get a crazy deal and a good percent off your monthly bill (ie: I got 25% off) in a store. Doesn't have to be a family plan either.

Other phones/carriers also available.
iPhone was the best purchase I've ever made. I commute a lot (2-3 hours a day) and its worth its weight in gold right there, but I often find myself in situations where I'm waiting for someone/something/bored out of my fucking mind and the phone keeps me entertained. It's hard to beat a device which you can use a Game Boy Advance, SNES, listen to music, browse the web, and talk to people.
I sold my 3G for $250 and bought my i4 for ~$215. Like someone said, these phones sell like fucking hotcakes, especially to those who don't have a contract.
All has been said before. I personally think the cost is stupid, insane, and retarded. I pay about $80/month for my iPhone with AT&T. However, once you've gotten a smartphone, one simply cannot go back. So tread carefully here: your monthly bill isn't going to be pleasant by any stretch of the imagination.

might be possible for me, which would be amazing (4 lines on our plan, 2-3 want data)
I'm just gonna throw out that virgin mobile has an android smartphone (samsung intercept), and unless you're wanting your phone to be so amazing it plays crysis or can do a virtual overlay of star systems or buildings wherever you point it, that phone is more than "good enough" for anyone just wanting to get into smartphones. Also, the plan: 300 mins a month and unlimited everything else (text/data/etc) for 25/mo.
To the OP... how often do you check BG when you're on the computer? Now imagine you can check BG at the same rate when you're not on the computer!
Didn't want to make new thread but question about the iphone 4. Is the 32GB actually worth it or should I go with 16gb? And 4gb tethering or 2gb? This would be my first smartphone as well so I'm clueless.
16GB is fine unless you want to carry a crapload of music with you. I have about 6gb of music on there, plus last.fm and Spotify -- more than enough space left for apps!
You need to figure out what kind of user you will be.
I always go with the biggest size myself. I have 32GB and only 1GB free. Music takes up 17GB alone. I keep scrubbing it down but I need to just spend a weekend getting it down even further. Apps are 4.6GB. My biggest app is Oregon Trail (343MG WTF???) And I have another 5GB in podcasts but that's inflated because I'm like two months behind on my podcasts now that my commute to work was shortened from 45 mins each way to 10 mins. And of course, TV shows and movies take up a lot of space if you decide to do that.
As for tethering, I can live without it. There's always WiFi available when I need to hop on my laptop. Even when I travel, most hotels have free WiFi if I need to work at night. And if there isn't WiFi available then sometimes the smartphone itself can handle the situation if all I need to do is look something up on the net or answer an email. I rarely have a situation where I'm like OMG I really need tethering right now.
