Saying that voting for your favorite game is necessarily incorrect is moronic. You may think that what makes a game the most artistic is the elements of it that fit the classic definition of "art" like its story, its visuals, or its music. And that's like, you know, your opinion, man. You can't make objective statements about things like that. If someone wants to say FF7 was a better piece of art than Chrono Trigger because they enjoyed playing it more, who's to say that's wrong? It makes more sense to me than saying one was better than the other because of its soundtrack. It's not an exhibit on video game music. It's an exhibit on video games, and what makes a video game a video game is that it's interactive. Why not judge their artistic worth based on how much you enjoyed interacting with them?
Hmm, never thought of it that way. You make a good point.

It's really hard to say that one is better then the other because all art is a matter of taste. What is shit for someone is amazing for another.

    lol@"valid" judgments of art.
When someone says Silent Hill 2 stands above Tiger Woods '09 as a piece of art there is a long list of concrete arguments to support that statement that rise above 'I liked it more.'

God forbid people actually have a meaningful discussion about what makes one work of art better than another.

You're missing the whole subjective nature of art, unless Priran is thinking of something else then I have no clue.

    3. representing or applied to an actual substance or thing, as opposed to an abstract quality
Seems more likely that someone doesn't know what "art" means.
    1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

It is insufficient to simply say "I liked x more than y" or else this thread is just more "I voted for my favorite game!" and may as well be another "list your favorite game and never read the thread again" topic.

Is this the part where I quote one word from Priran's posts and attach a meme image?

In addition, the galleries will include video interviews with developers and artists, large prints of in-game screen shots, and historic game consoles. Visitors will be able to connect with the content of the show across generations, from those who remember the classics such as Pitfall! to those playing contemporary games like Flower.

the heavens broke open. an immense bolt of green and yellow lightning, pulsating with life and emanating with an unbiased love, struck down upon the thread. a small glinting shimmer could be seen from a distance. cautiously, priran approached the glinting wonder, with fear in his heart at what he may find.

aghast, he saw the blade. it was a divine blade, enormous in size, but in his hands it became light as a half of a feather and swift like mohammad ali. he knew what it was for. it was his calling, his fury, his power, his purpose. blade in hand, eyes to the heavens, fire in his heart - he accepted his calling. haterism had met its final nemesis.

Any discussion of "art" for the sake of "art" is inherently pretentious and will eventually end up with spaghetti-o vaginas and various other pretentious bullshit. Judge like against like. Paintings, music, film, video games = real things. Art = bullshit subjective abstract concept with 0 real meaning.

(What the fuck, vaginas isn't a word? Vaginae? Learned something new.)

can large portions of most games' targeted audience even differentiate between art and entertainment?

I don't see how you can't debate what is better artistically.

I can say I like one painting better than the other and still understand why another painting may be better in terms of art.

I always felt that a good measuring stick of a game's overall artistic endeavor can be observed in the amount of effort the designers put into making the water look good. It may sound like a retarded idea at first glance, but it seems to be the case that in every game I've felt was designed more intelligently than others, they always have had specific detail paid to the design and imagery of the lakes, rivers, and oceans. I guess that could potentially be a better starting point for an artistic debate? Idk... I pay attention to water in games, and find myself unable to hold this conversation with people in real life because most people wouldn't care and would look at me like wtf you goin on about fool, so there you go.
