Odd question on new people moving into building.

Okay since BG is a great place to get any and all information regarding well... let's be honest, everything, I had a strange question that doesn't come up every day.

Okay so let's say someone new moves into the building within the last week or so (less than that.) Met her once already about a month ago, but very briefly. She was coming in, I was leaving said a few things, and said I had to run. Said girl was pretty cute. Now that she's all moved in, I was wondering if I should go knock on her door and reintroduce myself. She seemed genuinely nice when I spoke to her for a few minutes, and I feel bad I had to run.

Living in my building as long as I have, I haven't really gotten the chance to get to know many of my neighbors. Lately that's changed and I find I have quite a few nice neighbors. I try to talk to them when I can. So this is a 2 fold kind of thing. I'd normally talk to neighbors, but I don't know if it's strange or not knocking on someone's door that I don't even know to strike up conversation with them. Plus she is cute. I normally don't have a problem meeting new people or talking to them.

    SUGGESTIONS!?

You already made up your mind and you just want to hear someone repeat it. Stop being wishywashy and go talk to her.

I wouldn't bring her anything. Seems too kiss-assy. But you should go knock on the door and "welcome her to the neighborhood." Nothing wrong with meeting new neighbors. I actually prefer it so I can pre-judge them and predict if I'll have any problems out of them in the future.

If old and white, no problems in the forecast. If young and white or any minority, have courtesy officer/landlord on speed dial with neighbor's apartment number and name handy.

Yeah I don't think I'd bring anything. I think that is weird, lol.

Actually when another neighbor had moved in about a year ago, she brought over some fruit basket. She was young and white. That same night, she had a party til almost 5 AM. Police were called on 2 occassions (not by me) so it's funny you should mention that.

You could have a small party/get together and invite her as well "seeing as she's new" or yeah... bring her food (perhaps you can "accidentally" buy something you don't like. If you're scared to just knock on her door for no reason, you could always ask for a cup of sugar.

Add a tentative "if you know what I mean" if you're feeling confident.

I don't get the "no gift, that's weird" stance when it comes to greeting and meeting a new neighbor. A simple gift like homemade cookies (or even storebought) is a great icebreaker, and is a good way to get a person to remember details about you or to get them to actually pay attention to you - you invested in them, they're more likely to invest in you, so to speak.

This is not to say that offering nothing is necessarily bad, just that the act of offering a welcoming gift isn't really considered "creepy".

The real key to forming a cordial relationship with a new neighbor is the promise of future contact - inviting them to a party you may be hosting, or an offer of helping them move or unpack some of their boxes, for instance. Little things like this go a long way towards forming positive relationships with people who come into contact with you.

I like to observe them for a period of time to find out what they like and do things right. Best to invest in a good pair of binoculars so you can see clearly from afar while remaining inconspicuous in a trench coat.

Knocking on the door and introducing yourself is also an option. I've done it, and had it done to me. Nothing real strange about it, especially if she's been moved in less than a week. I guess when you saw her a month ago she was just looking at the apartment or something?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I agree. It seems to have gotten a little outdated but it used to be considred pretty traditional to bring a new neighbor something, I can't imagine thinking it's weird.

I moved in with 3 other roommates. I'm the only one that's actually friendly with the other neighbors and thus gets invited all the time to shit or get treated to food occasionally when I come to hang out.

    Quick aside.

I saw one of the neighbors naked accidentally when I was hanging out at her apartment. She has a door with the glass squares on it and a huge drape covering it. She didn't close it all the way to let her dog run back and fourth and her dog being a team player went into the room and brushed aside the drape just enough for me to get a pretty good peek while she was changing before we went out to drink. I probably could've hooked up with her but I actually met her through her boyfriend that came to visit and dude spilled his guts to me about shit enough where I would've felt like a shit head taking advantage while they were still together.

Funny you should say that. She is directly above and diagonal from me. So if I look out my window, I can see the apartment. That's just plain creepy though. Wouldn't do that. I went upstairs before and knocked on the door, there was no answer. Then I went out and noticed her car was gone. (she parks next to me)

When I saw her a month ago, her uncle was apparently doing some major work on the apartment. I have a habit of talking to people I don't know in the building.

Also to those of you who say bringing something isn't strange, I see your point. I know how to bake, just don't have many ingredients. It's funny though, yesterday when it snowed, I ended up shoveling her out. Actually I shoveled out 6 people yesterday. She was one of them. mostly because she's next to me and any snow she shoveled or knocked off the car would have gone into my spot. So I said fuck it and did the 20 mins of extra work. So I can always mention that :3

Remember that time I shoveled snow for you so you would be able to move freely? I've decide to make up for it by baking you a piece of cake.

I will laugh so hard when you knock on her door with a cake and her husband/bf answers the door with no shirt on.

    "thats for the cake, bro"

It wasn't an accident and you were going out to drink together already. She wanted a MAN, and the ball was dropped.
