Ran across this today. Anyone else heard about this and/or playing it? I did a search of the title but didn't run across anything. Looks rather fucking awesome to kill time with friends.
The game has been around since March 2010. The game is indeed laggy, mostly due to a problem in the server-side code that has yet to be traced down. Up until today, there was virtually no real issues with what lag there was, then SilkWizard sent out 8 emails to the media not realizing just how much of a response he was going to get...which obviously the servers (which are only designed for up to 60 players) couldn't handle. What use to take about 5 or 6 days for the lag to build up to a semi-annoying level now takes a matter of minutes.
Facts:
BYOND, the engine the game was written on top of, is mostly at fault for alot of things.
The programmer is self-taught in the ways of programming; though he's came a long way since he release the fan game Dragon Warrior Online several years ago. He and Tenkuu (also known as SpSpiff) work on the code in their spare time.
When the storm of new players slows down drastically, things should become more enjoyable.
That said.. I am the server administrator of the main sever (called Shrenwold), and one of the four "admins" from Silk Games. I spend most of my time in FFXI, but the other three are much more active in that community than I am.
Lag aside, I almost feel like the grind is a bit too harsh for acquiring EXP and Gold. I think I did most of the beginning area quests aside from killing Reghor, which seemingly requires a party or good stock of the second tier potions. Compared to the Bandits in the cave which could hit me for 1 with the best gear possible from the starter town (which I got as drops, not actually bought ;_ he wound up doing like 14+ to me a round which meant, by the time I got to him from a fresh rest, I was somewhere between 50-65 HP. Either way, I put him on hold for now and went toward Balzackia, just to find mobs that can use spells/breaths for like 15 a pop. I can one-shot the butterflies, but other mobs can take 2 hits. Still, TNLs are like a few hundred+ and your basic random encounter in the area might be lucky to give you over 20 EXP while Gold is even fewer and the new gear costs like 700+. Needless to say, I took a break for the night after progress felt kinda glacial.
I know grindy is a bit of an old school staple, but I'm curious if there might be mobs out there like DW's metal slimes that are skewed more toward high EXP or cash. I can stomach hunting down such things in spurts, but if you're looking at like 30+ minutes a level on top of lag issues early on, I feel like something's off. Nonetheless, I can understand servers getting overwhelmed with a bit of media exposure. Bit of a blessing and a curse, I suppose.
