In my community there's this really great program called Free Cycle at the community bike shop. If you go in, volunteer 4 hours and go to a class on bike safety, they let you build a bike from spare parts in the shop. It's nothing fancy, but it's free. I don't know if there is anything in your area similar, but it's worth looking around for.

I guess I didn't think about the ghetto. Our community bike shop is pretty cool. They'll even let you check out bikes for months at a time. Here's a picture of their bike wall you get to pick from.

I ended up buying a bike from my friend, but I still want to do the program so I can build a bike and learn how to put them together. I haven't really ridden a bike in like 15 years.

it's not exactly a complicated piece of machinery. How hard is it to figure out how to attach wheels, chain, and possibly handlebars/brakes(if the brakes aren't already attached to the frame..) to a bike frame?

On another note, I give you mad props for having the balls to ride around here anyway, Cream. I'm terrified to ride my bike anywhere but on the trails that really don't encounter automobile traffic because I'm convinced it's going to kill me. I have seen the way these people drive.

I'd probably ride my bike a lot more if I didn't have to get in my truck and drive my bike to a location where I consider it safe to ride. The one plus is that if my truck breaks down there's always the bike as a backup for work purposes, but damn, son, I hope it doesn't ever come to that.

I used to ride a bike all around the ASU campus and the surrounding area when I was going there, and I never felt endangered by the motorists. Granted, Tempe is not only a great city for cyclists, but I was also not a giant dick like most dumbass college fucktards on bikes who pretend they don't have to follow traffic laws because they're not in car. I saw so many kids almost get hit because they'd 1) jump from the sidewalk into the road-side abruptly, 2) pay little to no attention to traffic lights and posted signs, and 3) ride on the wrong side of the road, RIGHT into oncoming traffic.

Only time I do this is when assholes park like on the fuckin curb so at a stop light, so it's impossible to pass them otherwise, but I don't rly just jump back in, I ease my way back in, like directly after a car passes me I'll hop back on w/ at least a car length distance between the person about to pass me.

3) ride on the wrong side of the road, RIGHT into oncoming traffic.

Only time I do this really is going from school to Taco Bell. Not far enough to warrant crossing the street twice, so I just ride the sidewalk in the opposite direction of traffic. Which most of the time poses no problem, until it comes to an intersection and people don't like to look both ways before turning.
