Setting up a pc to play only ffxi

I've gotten a hold of a computer that I want to wipe clean and use it for only ffxi (not even web browsing except for windows update). I want to put a version of xp on it that doesn't have a lot to it. I think they make modded OS that are very compact? Anyway I'm looking for the best way to set up a pc only for ffxi and maybe where to get a copy of xp that doesn't stain a pc any more than it has to and any suggestions would be very appreciated.

afaik, you'll be set with a single core cpu clocking at 3.2GHz or higher like a pentium 4 or something, and as far as a vid card, an above average DX9 card will do the trick and not lag the game, I've been hearing the recent DX10 and DX11 cards have huge lag issues w/ ffxi.

I'm not sure what's in it as I didn't buy it. But I'm hoping if all I do on it is play ffxi then it will run smooth and not lag me into disconnect when I'm in an alliance or in port jeuno

I have found this to not be true of the newer ati cards. Processor means a lot but if you are just single boxing (ie not running more than one instance of the game at once on the computer) a decent dual core should be fine. Ram requirements are low and ram is laughably cheap so that's not even worth worrying about. Video card wise again you don't need much. As I mentioned before, I have had better luck (both myself and people I know) with ati for XI. You may need to mess with drivers if you go nvidia.

Well i'm back home now and the computer i'm working with is a Dell Dimension E310 with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4. Under display adapters it says Intel (R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset family. Am I going to need something better than this to play FFXI smoothly? I know I cant do anything about the processor but I'm mostly curious about the video card.

It's also been brought to my attention that the RAM I ordered may not work with this PC. I ordered "ADATA 2 GB DDR2-800 (PC-6400) CL5 DIMM 2x1 GB Memory Kit with Heatspreader AD2U800B1G5DRH (Black)" and The computer I'm going to put it in is a Dell Dimension E310. If that doesnt work, can someone show me what RAM will work? I know it can support up to 2gig of RAM but that's about the extent of my knowledge for it. Thanks.

Then I'd recommend something better than that. The video card is integrated (crappy) will probably run the game but at very low settings and not as smooth as you'd like :/

You seem to have two PCI & 1 PCI-E x1 slot for expansion. Not familiar with any good cards that I can suggest though.

oh and your new ordered memory should default to a lower speed so it should work.

There are performance editions of XP, however these are not official and you will not find them in the official channels. I'd suggest looking on torrent sites. I have one from Oct last year and it comes in at around 150MB. It is INCREDIBLY stripped down mind, don't be surprised if your PC doesn't run properly out of the box, you'll definitely need drivers for near enough all of the major components in the computer.

I got my new RAM in and I got logged in to ffxi all the way up to the character log in and the computer restarted. After that restart I got to the POL log in screen and it restarted again. When it came back up, I got this pop up. "Windows have recovered from a serious error. Error Signature BBCode: 100000ea BCP1: 89847DA8 BCP2: 89C41E68 BCP3: BA4DBCBC BCP4: 00000001 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 3_0 Product: 256_1" and the Technical info shows 2 files that are included in the error report "MINI022811-02.dmp" and "sysdata.xml" I'm running the ram seperetly right now to see if it's a bad stick. Any other suggestions?

Installed new RAM, got to character log in screen, crash. Then restarted, got past POL log in, crash. Been searching around online but I cant find a real solution for what WhoCrashed is saying is the problem. Here are the crash dumps. Id appreciate any help. The most recent one had to do with me trying to install my bluetooth dongle and attempting to use my ps3 controller. I have no clue why it crashed while doing that and now it wont even detect the dongle.

Your intel graphic chipset is sucking, try removing/reinstalling drivers, if it doesn't work try to find older drivers, if all else fails, buy a real graphic card for $50+ (assuming you're still only intending to play FFXI.)

Yes. Can I take the video card out of this PC and put it in that one or will there be issues with that? Idk what all I would have to do to make that work.

It's not a card, you have your video processor embedded onto your motherboard (integrated gfx). You can add a PCI or PCI-e 1x card if we're still talking about the same Dell PC I linked above.

I've been checking out pci cards on amazon but I have no idea what I'm looking for. I just want something that's gonna run ffxi so I can be able to move when I'm in an alliance. that lag is something horrible

You need to watch the power requirements and make sure they will work with your power supply, which the documentation says (230 W)
