Played for about 3 months recently, but I'd more or less exhausted the solo content they'd added since I first quit and wasn't at all interested in participating in guild drama with raids and shit. If it weren't for EI mobs having stupidly high HP (primarily geared as a warrior tank, so do the math there on killing slow already), I might've stuck around a bit longer since I could at least grind PA between zone events, but Trion didn't seem interested in budging there, so yeah...

yeah its not a good idea to do tank in EI unless you do 10+ mobs at the time. just using grindspec is more then enough. otherwise you can always grind instaventures. decent exp and some sourcestones.

on another note. took awhile, but my social guild is finally about to do akylios. wish me luck on sunday :3

Have fun, were early into phase 3 right now on the stupid squid. Just make sure your warriors and rogues don't blink/bullrush. As amusing as it is seeing someone fly into the water cause they acidently targetted a stinger instead of a lasher, it's annoying.

In the middle of the free trial and tying to decide whether or not to take the plunge. How active is this game from a community standpoint? Will a brand new player have trouble finding people to do lower level shit with?

Can I solo/quest to 50 or will I need to group?

You can solo to 50 through quests pretty quickly. There aren't as many people doing the lower level dungeons anymore but can also do those while you quest.

Yea, when I leveled my rogue, I just put myself in the queue for dps and that gave me 30-60 minutes to quest and grind while waiting for the dungeon finder to pop. Also watch the level ranges on the random dungeons. I had horrible luck and being on the last level to qualify for a dungeon, wind up with that dungeon and get shit for exp.

Honestly, I've found the game pretty well self-contained when in came to utilizing outside resources. Sure, someone might have a "perfect build" or whatever out there, but rare is that a must. I've also found collaborating with party members far more beneficial than just reading some site's strategy and trying to parrot it.

I am having these urges to get back into Rift, but is there really any point without being able to commit to a raiding guild? I have a lvl50 T2 geared rogue back from when I played it, I quit prolly about 5-6months a go if I was to estimate. Has there been any significant changes since then? anything that might make the resub worth it? I am definitely a PvE person but like I mentioned I cannot commit to a raiding guild, so maybe leveling a character and using it for PvP might be an option.

If you weren't around for EI, that alone should give you a few weeks of play time if you're not super hardcore. Like you, I don't really have the stomach for raiding guilds due to FFXI basically ruining me to large-group "obligatory" content where daring to miss a night either won you the third degree or losing priority on something you want. Instant Adventure can be a decent time killer, but it's not something difficult and stands to benefit from a bit more variety. It's still a new system, though. Lots of new shit to grind out IS for, which can also come from IA or the usual zone events. I haven't dabbled much in Master Mode dungeons yet, but I'm guessing they're basically to T1 what T2s were, only now T1 and T2 where kinda merged for the sake of simplifying PUG queues along with late-game gear adjustments. Not sure if you would've been about when they added Planar Attunement, too (Basically Rift's merit system).

But yes, leveling a new character could also be a big time investment. I still think Trion needs to do a bit more for the not-raid-guild types in terms of more reasonable progression and variety (Full IS armor sets are a lot of fucking IS... basically their way of saying Raid or GTFO), and EI itself can be rough depending on your build/gear. Still, I think you could get the better part of a month out of a resub. If you don't like it after, can just drop again.

Thanks for your input, my play time throughout the week is very limited and on the weekends it depends what I have planned so a month of solid play time might be longer for me. That might do me until GW2 beta phases or maybe SE will pull something out of their asses for FFXI. All I am really looking for is a "tie me over" to GW2. No other type game can really grasp my interest apart from MMO's and all the free ones are just shit. And WoW is going through one of those stale content plateaus, fuck that.

Finally have a pc capable of playing this game. Was wondering if anyone has any good tips for beginners? Should I just grind it out and adventure to 50 then worry about things, or is there anything really that important on the leveling up?

It's pretty much all about level 50, but the dungeons on the way are fun in my opinion.
