Why Rift may be the game for you.

Just in case people keep showing up in the other Rift threads with "Should I try out Rift?" we can all make some points in here and hopefully people refer to it.

    Reasons why I like Rift:
-Dynamic content system: Rifts are the new mechanic in this game. They're essentially a fluid campaign-like system with rewards based on contribution without a silly cap that's easy to cheese and get. This is what is going to make this game truly different from WoW and other WoW-clones.

-Soul system: While at endgame there will most likely be cookie cutter specs, for leveling and solo content you can put together oddball combinations and come out with something great. Most likely the cookie cutter cleric tank build will be Justicar/Shaman/Druid (Druid has a +health t1 talent and a shield for level 2+) but I just switched to soloing as a Justicar/shaman/warden. The Warden gives me a heal over time spell and a ranged spell I can spam for threat if necessary and it's working out just as well (if not better) than Druid for the moment. Likewise you can often take a healer soul and tack it onto a dps soul so you have self-heals. It's what you'd want from FFXI/FFXIV's systems that works well.

I'm tempted to put up a "Why Rift may -NOT- be the game for you" post, simply because TRION has more than enough subs now and I'd rather not see the section turn to shit when trolls start trollin'.

Wish people would just understand that if they don't like something, they're not obligated to play it.

while I hope the game succeeds, its hard to come to any sort of conclusion based on pre-order population. A lot of web sites have been pushing ppl to pre-order for the OB / early launch to test out the game. How that translates into release numbers, and after first month sub's is an entirely diff story.

For example... I do like the game.. but I'm looking forward to DA2 and I don't intend to actually "buy" Rift until after I beat DA2 since I don't have time to juggle offline games, WoW raiding, another mmo, and not be a hermit lol. But I was definitely there for the head start is what I'm trying to say.

Eh, the WoW subsection is pretty damn nice on this forum.

All I really say thats not been said already is from playing FFXI for 5 years then WoW on and off for 3. And I have been in and out of more free MMOs then I can count on my fingers and I just couldn't get sucked into any game anymore because I know what to expect/did the same thing before.

But man, this game...I feel like a 16yr old again discovering FFXI. First time in a long time where I actually looked forward to getting home and going on RIFT.

Just give it a shot, see what you think.

Server events / rifts and PvP (open world, not so much warfronts, although pre-made with guild is fun) is what makes this game fun for me. PvE, questing, crafting...there's nothing new to see here and I honestly don't see how anyone could enjoy the game doing that. I use questing to kill the time and level while waiting for dungeon runs.

The soul system I find awesome on the surface, but it's obvious that certain souls are meant to be paired together and kind of leads down to the cookie cutter side. Also, it's not like you really get enough points to spec into 3 souls...more like heavy in 1 soul, moderate in 1, hardly anything in the 3rd or moderate in 2, light in a 3rd.

But being able to quickly and easily change up your specs, try new things are a plus. I also really like being able to save roles and switch between a tank, dps, or healer on the spot as your group dynamic changes.

Socially what's the game like? The community and linkshells were the main things I missed from FFXI when I quit years and years ago, and while WoW was a step below it still strongly encouraged partying and getting to know people through instances. Aion's the first game that's made me feel like a slanty-eyed Korean grindcore bastard, and I'm fucking Jewish and white so props to them for accomplishing that. I just never felt like anyone talked or said much outside of legions in that game, and if they did it was kinah spam.

There's far more grouping going on than WoW simply because of the Rift events. Especially at the moment I often end up with 1/2/3 other people running through a zone closing rifts. There's also world chat based on level range, so you can see a lot of names there too.

Alright, great. After reading a few reviews I think I'm pretty sold on this, will probably pick it up later tonight. Eagle, mind if I tag along and roll on your server? Are you on the same one most other people are on? From your sig it looks like you rolled Guardian, right?

There don't seem to be many on Alsbeth. No idea where the collective is(I'm not sure there is one) but if you roll here on Guardian I can tag you up in my guild and such, since I'm the leader.

Yeah, the Who's who thread seemed pretty scattered when it came to people's servers. I'll roll on Alsbeth then, thanks for the guild invite. Soon as I get it installed/patched I'll look for you in-game, won't be for a few hours though.

I'm in the same exact situation as you, after FFXI I've played so many free games, then LOTRO, then Aion, but nothing ever made me sink in like RIFT does.
    For the uncertain :
In a half day of playing, I've went from 15 to 20 in about 6 hours, and that was running around closing rifts, pvping, doing dungeons, doing quests, crafting and looking out for artifacts. In that amount of time, I changed every part of my gear, unlocked 5 new classes, and made more money than I needed to buy pots and spell upgrades. Nothing feels tedious in this game if you actually concentrate on playing the game and not simply grind your way through, it is definitely worth a buy.

Oh, and seeing rifts pop with an invasion of monsters is simply awesome.

    50 is level cap.

After starting a war with the defiants RIGHT OUTSIDE their capital city, I'm sold on this game. We fought off a major invasion, killed their boss mob, while killing them at the same time. Shit was glorious. Long live rift.

I think my coworker might be on your server, but defiant side. He was talking about the guardian raid last night on Meridian... lol sounded pretty fun.

Can you edit your thread to include some cons too? Like someone kind of already said it's nice to hear the bad things about the game too.

The idea wasn't to update the OP with each persons posts. Just to make a thread with people stating why they like the game so people can get an idea of it.

I think out of the gates, RIFT will do fine so it may be the game for you. People often forget that WoW is a 7 year old game (almost) and that the pattern has been repeated for quite some time. While I still play WoW, I was in the RIFT beta (closed) and the game was pretty solid. I didn't like the Warhammer type graphics that much and how jumping/some of the animations looked but overall, it looks to be pretty good. To compare, it reminded me of WAR, WoW and EQ2 all rolled into one with some new additions. The "dynamic content" is a lot like the "public quests" in WAR. IMO, it's the best MMO to launch since WoW (not that there is a lot to compare to).

These are all opinions of mine. When in doubt, play what you like!
