I think his point was that FFXIV can hardly be considered a functioning game, much less a MMO. It's like talking about bad movies and bringing up Battlefield Earth, you're not allowed to compare things to the worst example in the history of man

I get his point, it's just a bad one. Battlefield Earth is an awful, shitty movie -- that doesn't mean it stops being a movie just because it's terrible. FFXIV is still an MMO regardless of how bad it is. People just go "lol how can u evn call tht a mmo its hurrible" because they think completely disqualifying it is funny. And I think FFXIV is shit, I'm in no way defending it. Ringthree just has a stupid argument.
By that logic, the only MMOs that we can mention are FFXI, WoW, and lots of other OLD MMOs because every single recent MMO has failed miserably.
Oh hey guys, FFXIV sucks, so we can't bring it up in any MMO argument. We also can't bring up Age of Conan, Warhammer, APB, Aion, Vanguard etc etc
Is that counting Korea? Because Aion is nowhere near a success in the USA
That really depends on how you define success... I'm sure they made a good chunk of money off of just translating the game for us, so to NCsoft it is a success in NA/EU. They didn't capture the long-term player-base here like they have in Korea, so in that regard I guess you could say it wasn't a success as a player. But really, I think the latter analysis is unreasonable in determining success or failure, because that's basically saying it was a failure because I didn't like it. In my eyes, they made their development costs back and more, so it was a success.
I would be very surprised if FFXIV has made back their development costs. And it's not looking like they will for quite some time (or ever?), considering everyone is able to play for free and they're still pumping development costs into it, falling more and more behind. For this reason, I would call it a failure at this point. Without having actual numbers, maybe this is wrong, but it's what I speculate.
I don't know enough about the other MMO's you listed to comment on them, but I do agree that pretty much all recent MMO's have been failures. It has been my theory that it's because they're being released prematurely, but Rift doesn't seem to fall into that trend. I really feel like this game was definitely ready for launch, and I'm actually interested in seeing how this game does in the future for this reason alone.
Part of me is really hoping that Rift is a huge success just to set an example and show developers to stop releasing unfinished games.
Edit: And yeah, the 3.5 million number he was quoting for Aion includes Korea, Russia, Taiwan, and NA/EU.
In terms of MMOs, my opinion is that it would be a success if it hangs around for awhile with a large playerbase. I hear about Aion here and there, generally on gaming websites when a larger update has happened, but it doesn't really seem to have staying power. And unfortunately with todays playerbase for MMOs, I find it really hard to believe even if Aion had a complete turn around and was an awesome game, people generally will probably not go back to a game once they've labeled it bad in their minds. Which is probably going to be the case for FFXIV unless theres a lot more people planning to play it on PS3 than I realize.
Seriously, how are you guys really not getting it? I was kidding. FFXIV was an abortion from the word go. At best, it shoudn't be included in the discussion because it would make everything else look too good by comparison.
I don't actually believe it can't be used in a comparison. I just think including it in the comparison is like kicking poor defenseless retarded babies. Are you a poor defenseless retarded baby kicker? ARE YOU?
Agreed. It may be a success in Korea, but here it has really flopped. The only concern that I have for Rift is that Aion had a big surge when it was launched. Rift is designed for an NA market though, and Aion was designed for the Korean market. Rift should have a balanced leveling/endgame curve. Aion, on the other hand, started off nice, but then reverted to the Korean grindfest in later levels. So in the end, I think Rift will be fine and the "newness" factor shouldn't wear off like it has for so many recent MMOs.
This is the reason I absolutely fucking HATE MMO game reviewers. They play the game for 10 levels then declare it a success or failure. It is poor reporting, and actually quite lazy and dishonest. They have no problem playing through a 40 hour JRPG but won't spend requisite time even exploring an MMO.
FFS 3rd thread in this forum to be trolled to death, just like in-game. Why the fuck did trolling become the national sport of douchebags?
What else are they gonna do?
As an unnecessary precision, I don't think Ringthree is a douchebag, I actually think everyone arguing with him here are retarded for insurging themselves over such a menial comment.
On topic, Rift is the game for you because it's fricking awesome.
Well I bought it. My ffxi ls is gone forever, 14 sucks, and I got a RL buddy who just started yesterday so wish me luck. Is there a "bg for rift" somewhere?
