This is the first step in getting us somewhere. It's happened before, and it can happen again, so help make it happen!

You might have to fan the Konami page to comment, I guess.

I'd highly recommend Suikoden 2, for the ps1, as it's easily the best game in the series. If you're set on PS2, 5 is also very good.

1, 2 and 5 are the only ones I've played. I remember you doing a 3 run though on a buggy emulator lol. But 3 looked decent as well.

Suikoden 2 is probably my one of my favorite RPG's of all time. 3 is a great entry in the series as well. It's the unfortunate victim of bad ageing in a game. I can still enjoy it, but the stiffness of the characters is something awful. 4 was an absolute train wreck of a game, and I don't even consider it a Suikoden game. 5 seemed okay from the few hours I played it, but nothing like the first 3. I suppose that is because the director of the series left midway through the development of part 3. AFAIK, he came up with a lot of the story too. I don't know if he didn't tell his development team anything or what, cause after 3 the shit went way downhill. The DS version just seemed extremely boring, and I don't really consider that part of the series either.

    I loved 1 and 2. 3 and 5 were decent. 4...doesn't exist.

I think 5 is the closest you'll get to old Suikoden. I played 5 and while the ending or certain events don't make me want to cry like a little bitch (some got close though), it was still a very satisfying game.

Also, I think everyone can agree that 4 doesn't exist. How they localized that and not 3 or 5 is beyond me.

Yeah, we got 4. Actually we might have gotten 5 but I never checked as I imported my copy. We definitely didn't get 3 though, which is a shame as I really wanted to play that.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I really loved 3, couldn't get into 1 &2, but that was mostly because I never tried them until way after 3, so hard to get into old games. I played 4 for a bit and it sucked. never tried 5, 'cause I figured the only thing I liked about 3 was the split storylines. I guess I should try it sometime though if I find it cheap.

I actually kind of liked 4, because it fixed some of the issues I had with 3, and it wasn't THAT bad. It lacked a fuckton of character development though, which was a pretty big fucking deal for me, but it wasn't as bad as some people make it out to be. At the time it came out, I actually liked it a lot better than 3..

3 to me feels like, it's really weird and awkward. I actually hated 3 a lot back before 4 came out. The battle system is incredibly awkward, coming from the simplistic systems of 1 and 2, and I really hated how they handled the transitions from 2d to 3d. I also didn't like the trinity system and a lack of a real Tenkai Star. Oh, and the world map. What the shit was that? Having to walk through those annoying areas over and over, ugh.

So when I first got 4, the immediate effects of it were: A return to the simple battle system (although the reduction to 4 characters was garbage), a world map (if you can call a big mass of water with some islands a world map. At least it wasn't annoying like 3's), and an actual centralized story that followed just one character and wasn't all over the place.

Now, looking back, yeah, I still agree that 3 had its faults, and that 4 was a good step on fixing them, but when you look at the actual important aspects of Suikoden, mainly the story and the character development, 4 was incredibly lackluster, and inferior to 3. 3 is a very good and solid game once you look through its bad aspects, and focus on the important ones. The battle system is actually kind of fun when you learn to exploit it :D and the story is actually really good, and it's something that any Suikoden fan should be able to appreciate.

I keep hoping for two to hit PSN because for some reason it emulates like crap on my PC and I never could seem to fix it. Five was amazing and I really liked three as well. I never picked up four because of everything I heard about it and I still don't think I'm missing much.

Suikoden V is definitely the closest game to the spirit of I and II, but it's really slow to start out with. If you aren't a fan of the series I could see you getting frustrated by the slow to build story. If you stick with it, you'll be rewarded with a rich story. Suikoden II remains the finest story of any RPG I've ever played. The characters are fleshed out and bold, the story is full of surprises, tension, drama, and real emotion. Suikoden (I) hasn't aged as well, but I still love it. Suikoden III is a good game, but it's never been my favorite. I feel like the Flame Champion was a huge cocktease, and Thomas was pretty ho-hum, but the story was good. I enjoyed the epilogue. I liked Suikoden IV, but I never finished it. I was really enjoying the story, but the random battles were so high, the naval travel sucked, and I just couldn't finish. I did love that your castle was a battleship.

Only thing I didn't like about V was how the hero didn't really have a true rune. Even though the dawn and dusk/twilight runes were awesome, and I loved the combinations at end game, it didn't feel epic like the Soul Eater or Bright Shield runes did.

V was definitely a great game once you got into it, but I felt a lot of emulation of 2, what with the "rival", love interest and death scenes.

Suikoden II, I agree has one of the finest stories I've ever experienced. Couple that with amazing music, and if you don't feel something watching those scenes you don't have a fucking heart.

What irked me about III was that Yuber was a major villain, but Pesmerga was nowhere to be found. I want more of that story.

If I had to rank my prefs, I'd go 2 > 5 > 1 > 4 <> 3. 4 and 3 kinda flip-flop on points, but I've never had any motivation to replay the latter. I actually thought the Tactics game was fairly decent while the DS game was also passable. I think the hate for the latter stems off the fact it's not exactly part of the timeline, but if you play through it, you can possibly weasel in a relation with the One King trying to merge all universes.
