Rutgers University to Offer "Gender Neutral" Housing

Again you are not looking at a comparable situation. Have you ever seen a college dorm room? Have you ever seen a studio apartment? Have you ever compared the square footage of the two? Not sure how it is at other colleges but at CalPoly there is a difference between an on campus apartment and the freshman dorms. In the freshman dorms the rooms are literally maybe 8x12 or so. Just enough room for two beds and two desks. Nothing else. A studio apartment is probably going to at least be large enough to put up temporary rice paper wall things that you get at Ikea to create partitions in a giant room.

Edit: Granted I don't know how big or small or the configuration of the dorm rooms at Rutgers but the dorm rooms I have seen at other colleges and have heard of from talking to friends never compare to studio apartments in any way.

Have you seen studio apartments in Chicago and other big cities? Some are as big as a dorm room not counting the bathroom and kitchen.

Even if you're in that small of a space, I still don't see the big issue. Yeah, you're going to be that much closer to the person but it's not like you spend 24/7 in the dorm. Unless you have no self-control or something, I don't see the big deal.

I'm not sure how comfortable I would have been with this in a dorm, but after my first year, I was in on-campus apartment-style living. I could share an apartment no problem with a member of the opposite gender. Hell, my senior year, I lived in a three bedroom house with a girl and a gay dude. Having my own space was key though, having roommates wasn't a big deal if I could retreat to my own private area.

Still, the reason -why- they're doing this doesn't seem to support the decision to do it. A dude gets webcam'd by his roommate, and the footage is circulated. In what way does this prevent any one person doing this to their roommate?

You have to specifically request gender neutral housing. You are not randomly placed in it. And your parents threaten to pull your college funding because of it, that's their perogative since, you know, they are paying for your college.

This is an awesome idea for all the wrong reasons.

But, since I don't live in a dorm, I wouldn't know. I used to go visit my friend (who was a girl) and it always seemed awkward when her roommate came in even though we never did anything. It prolly is a bad idea for a guy and girl to room together though, but could be potentially awesome.

I realize not all fags are neat freaks, but I'm sure you are better then the semi-nocturnal fatass who would play WoW until 6am preventing me from getting any sleep the nights I had an 8am lecture the following morning. I'm also sure you didn't leave your used diabetic test strips on the fucking floor of the room either.

In the end though, all of this was worth it when:
He got an internet girlfriend off of some diabetes forum and would phonesex/cyber with her when he thought I was sleeping. Or when he dropped out 2 weeks after the cybering started and I had a double to myself for the rest of the semester.

This is the part I don't get. As others suggested this is basically first semester roommate syndrome. Where you don't know who you are living with. Whether they're male or female. Usually by the end of the first semester you've met someone to room with for the next semester and these things go away (usually).

I don't think this will solve the problem they are trying to address at all.

they are basically whitewashing with this. They are seen as having a bad environment for lgbt students, so do something easy (actually requires less work, no long have to check peoples gender when they select roommates) that is usually seen as gay-friendly, even though its unrelated. It's like a university touting its new recycling bins when people complain they aren't green.

Especially at Slutgers, too. People still quote that erroneous report that stated something like 95% of students have an STD there.
