    Running old programs

    I currently have win 7 64-bit.

I'm trying to run a windows 95 program. It tells me it is not compatible with the version of windows I'm running and no setting on the "run this program in compatibility mode for:" list is making it work.

The installer for said program is locked into "Windows XP (SP2)" and it doesn't let me change that compatibility for that (in case it might be that).

    Any ideas?

What program would it be? I'm not sure if it'd help but I used Windows Virtual PC to play some old 16 bit games on this computer.

If you want to try see if it works, the URL is: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir...c/default.aspx

If it's from that era I'm pretty sure a good virtual PC program would work. I don't have a lot of knowledge using these these or what else it out there, but here's another called VMLite you try and see if it works: http://vmlite.com/

    Virtualbox for another free VM.

If the program has a DOS version, you could try DOSBox

Not sure how to use Virtual Box. Managed to create a win95 thing but it doesn't boot up. -.- Says no bootable medium found.

In virtual box you'll need to install the software for it to work. It's basically just a virtual pc and the standard rules generally apply. You can probably find a Win95/98 iso somewhere if you don't have one.

edit: Or I assume XP would probably work too.

Yeah, basically, you create a VM, then either put a disc in the drive and tell the VM to use what's in your optical drive. Or point it at an ISO file and tell it to use that. Going off of their list, and some forum posts, you'd be better off trying to use XP if your app will run in it.

Then you run through the Windows install process inside the VM. Once it's booting up from the hard drive image, install virtual machine extensions (it's a menu option in Virtual Box, basically mounts a CD image in the VM and does an autorun).

Alternatively, DOSBox can actually run 95/98 http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=24936
