You and I would do the quest because we want to know about Ala Mhigo, others would do the quest because they're bored of grinding and/or are out of guildleves, but would still like to advance a little. You shut down a group of players by not adding quantificable rewards, yet keep both by doing so.
I don't disagree that a variety of rewards for the quests would be good, but what I'm bitching about is people saying the quests suck/are useless just because there's a piece of gear as reward instead of SP. I just don't see why anyone would use these kind of quests as a source of SP when you can get 400k per week off guildleves and 20-30k per hour grinding. But maybe not everyone cares about being efficient. I wouldn't be against adding quests with SP rewards, I think the game needs variety to keep everyone happy.

I don't give a shit if I get rewarded some extra SP for quest completion or not. What pisses me off is not getting SP for what I kill. I'm a big fan of lore, but the lore thus far in this game hasn't really been inspiring to me.

I would rather see sp rewards on end of quests than on the mobs, removes any risk that ppl will sp on them.

Thats because quest items dropped off pre-existing enemies and weren't specifically spawned only for the quest. It's pretty obvious that they don't want EXP groups forming around these quest mobs(or give any incentive whatsoever for people not on the quest to kill these mobs), hindering people actually trying to complete it. It's not that big of a deal.

I loled. The rose-colored glasses in this thread by some individuals must be expensive as shit. Yeah, I remember a lot of quests like that, and hoo boy for that sweet reward. Lotta lore going on there as well, too.

Parhaps we should list pre-req quests along with the other requirements? I know that Beryl Overboard is not available to me as a rank 38 Gladiator and I've only done two quests so far: Bridging the Gap, and Assessing the Damage. I'm going to try the other rank 20 quest 'Til Death Do Us Part' and see if it unlocks Beryl Overboard.

EDIT: 'Til Death Do Us Part' is indeed the pre-req quest for 'Beryl Overboard'.

Just want to say that killing mobs for any reason should reward SP/exp/whatever. I don't care what the balance excuse is, they should be adjusting mob quantity and drop rates before removing basic SP/exp rewards. There are plenty of other ways they could be balancing it, killing mobs with no reward (and there isn't, completing the quest gives a reward, killing individual mobs doesn't) is dumb.

And there should definitely be, imo, SP/exp/WHATEVER rewards for completing the quests as well. And they should be roughly equal to, if not slightly more, than you could get purely grinding on just mobs.

If you can get 20-30k/hour from pure grinding, you should be able to gain 20-30k/hour from questing (if not a little more), between killing the mobs necessary for the quests and the bonus for turning the quest in. Pure mob grinding being the single "most efficient" way of leveling your character is dumb, since that's what it then basically forces everyone into doing if they want to progress efficiently. Even if it's sacrificing one type of grind for another, it's nice when you're able to have a change of scenery, a change of pace, constant smaller goals you're able to focus on achieving as you level to help break up the monotony.

The journey from level 1 - max isn't supposed to be a short one, but it isn't supposed to be absolutely-ridiculously-absurdly long either. And even if there isn't the same "immersion" or whatever bullshit with NPCs and world environment as something like WoW/etc., there's no reason that these quests can't be a massive source of lore, filling you in on all kinds of quest chains and stories about the world as you progress your character from noob adventurer to legendary hero. It would be nice if more changed than just "ohey, different mobs... no wait...", and there was actually some kind of impact to the story involved, and more than just the intermittent access to the damn story missions as you reach the proper level.

Getting as much or more SP/exp from quests, between both mobs and turn ins, would mean that you were able to actually be included in the world and it's story, be a part of what's going on in the different nations, throughout your journey to the top. Instead of just occasionally being allowed to learn what's going on, and the majority of your journey being one of purely grinding off of mobs, which basically means you have a minimal amount of impact on what's actually going on in the world, because instead of spending your time in the story, you're spending most of it outside of the story. Which is a great way of disguising the fact that there is, in reality, not all that much to know in the first place, I guess. I'd rather always be wanting to find out more, almost always able to find out more if I wanted to, than have to work my ass off grinding just to be able to get another tidbit of it.

k, /rantoff, time for some sleep.

True. Quest mobs shouldn't be handled differently to regular mobs in this regard.

If you can get 20-30k/hour from pure grinding, you should be able to gain 20-30k/hour from questing (if not a little more), between killing the mobs necessary for the quests and the bonus for turning the quest in. I disagree on this one. Doing nothing but grinding mobs in a group FF11-exp-party style should yield the maximum possible SP, IMO. You're concentrated to this (and no other) activity to get SP, so it should be most efficient.

Making (repeatable) quests the most efficient way to level up forces me to do them. We already have guildleves for these, and with them being time restricted, it's all fine as it is.

I liked some of the "carrots" FF11 had for quests. Those were character progression not linked to any specific job: Getting a chocobo license, getting RSE, getting Jungle/Sea/Sky access, getting an Airship pass and so on. You didn't do them for the exp, and often not for any immediate reward, but you did them to make your character more "complete".

I think everything the player does should reward skill/exp in a relatively proportional amount. doesn't have to be exact, but enough that doing quests etc is worthwhile not just from a completionist standpoint. I know many people in FFXI didn't even do missions because they don't enjoy dialogue. I think doing quests and missions should be rewarded well, which would help give incentive to those who aren't interested/already did it to do it or help others. Anything that rewards people for teaming up is a good thing in my opinion.
