The Japanese men who prefer virtual girlfriends to sex

Unless something happens to boost Japan's birth rate, its population will shrink by a third between now and 2060. One reason for the lack of babies is the emergence of a new breed of Japanese men - the otaku, who love manga, anime and computers more than sex.

Tokyo is the world's largest metropolis and home to more than 35 million people, so on the face of it, it is hard to believe there is any kind of population problem at all.

But Akihabara, an area of the city dedicated to the manga and anime subculture provides one clue to the country's problems.

    Akihabara is heaven for otaku.

For the record I think sponge bob is awful, but its a fucking tombstone, who gives a shit.
Normally the mausoleums and grave sites are separate (at least in the cemeteries I have been to). I know I wouldn't want to be staring at a 7ft tall Spongebob if I went to visit a family members' grave.

Does the headstone HAVE to be 7ft tall? Is that not a bit unreasonable? Why couldn't it be the same size as your average headstone? The cemetery also offered to refund all costs for this one and another one they had made for the living sister AND pay for new ones. I have to emphasize; SEVEN FEET TALL. That's taller than your average residential doorway.

I don't think someone else's headstone, no matter how ridiculous, takes away from my experience visiting my family member's graves at all.

I could see how it might for some people.

Sitting at a gravesite watching a coffin descend into the ground next to the 7' (or however) tall cartoon character may not help things... Or even just seeing it next to a loved one's grave.

Don't just limit it at Sponge Bob either, who is a more well-liked choice... what if it was like, a giant annoying orange? Or hello kitty? Or heck, Snooki from jersey shore? Where do you draw that line? Most people might not care just happening to see it among the graves, but some probably would care if it was right next to a loved one or something (who are probably the ones complaining the most in the first place).

I can't imagine ever caring much either way myself, and might even find it kind of awesome in some way, but yeah... that's me.

Oh I totally understand some people would be upset, but honestly, get over it. People want to have something special for their loved ones grave, and it's being taken away because people need everything to look exactly the same, and that's sad.

I've buried my mom and her parents in the past two years and I would not want it anywhere within eye shot of their grave sites. I also think SpongeBob is annoying as fuck and the show is stupid, but yeah I'd be annoyed by most 7 ft tall headstones of that nature. I love Futurama, the original seasons are something I could watch forever, but I would still be annoyed by a 7 ft tall Bender/Fry/Zoidberg/whatever headstone.

I think you need to respect everybody's space in an area like a cemetery. I go back to the argument that it could have been a smaller headstone and would not likely get the same reaction as this one did.

It doesn't need to be exactly the same, just do something fucking reasonable instead of an enormous eyesore. 3' SpongeBob? I can deal. Anything that is 5' or taller that looks like that thing? Fuck yeah I'm annoyed by it.

Burials and funerals are a massive waste of money. Have a cremation, invite their friends, get drunk and reminisce.

I think an engraving on a more normally sized headstone would be the most tasteful. The objection to the sudoku stone is particularly bullshit.

Unfortunately it's called "studying Japanese society" because it's pretty unique on a large scale to them. But it's a really complex and in-depth problem that stems from many facets about the society, none of which are easy to understand from an outsider's point of view. It's very simple for Westerners to look at a problem like this and throw the "nerd" blanket over the entire thing, chalking up the source of the problem to guys being too nerdy to have real girlfriends - but that's not the real cause of the problem at all and eliminating nerdy behavior wouldn't really help the core issue very much. There would still be a large number of guys (or really, people, since girls do it too) exhibiting hikkikomori [shut-in] behavior whether the 2D was there or not.

    Definitely agree with that.

Anyone that has a problem with the engraving on the tombstone, short of some ridiculous exceptions, just needs to get over it.

Honestly I am surprised nobody has looked into the business of selling advertising space on tombstones. Funerals and headstones are fucking expensive, every bit helps. And you can continue helping people from beyond the grave, like next time you go visit grandpa you discover you can get a $10 oil change at the Super Lube a few blocks away, what a deal! Thanks grandpa!

Cemeteries are pointless and unsustainable concepts anyway. Anyone who gives a shit is a selfish prick who can't think beyond themselves. It's like being mad because you saw someone wearing a Sponge Bob t-shirt in the vicinity of your relatives, but infinitely more stupid.

I don't see why cemetaries are pointless, considering the fact that we've discovered a lot about earlier cultures and the general health of people from earlier civilizations thanks to cemeteries and graveyards and the like. Granted, i doubt most people would be happy about the thought of their grand grand grand daddies and mommies being dug up centuries later for their bones to be analyzed and everything. :D

'Cemeteries are a waste of surface area' is chapter 9 in my book and one of my favorites. Just turn me into fertilizer.

that argument is actually one of the few that might actually make me think about being buried

Not even close to the same thing. A T-shirt is so much different than a seven foot tall headstone that I can't even begin to figure how you can make such a comparison. It isn't even about it being SpongeBob, but the fact that it is over twice the size of a normal headstone within a field of other ones. Do you really need a seven foot tall thing towering over you as you stand at your relative's grave? Here are my amazing Paint skills:

    Spoiler: show

I just have to reiterate, if it was a NORMAL size I'd be okay with it. The fact that it is SEVEN FEET TALL is what is unreasonable.

Also, Sudoku/Math formula is fine. It's an engraving and it's tasteful. It is not blaring or in your face.
