My husband just went to Seoul to his Grandmother's apartment for a ceremony on the anniversary of his Grandfather's death, which was 40 years ago. Apparently this is normal in Korean custom, for the oldest male child to perform these remembrance rituals; on (Lunar) New Year's, Thanksgiving (Chuseok), and the anniversary of their death. Because his Grandfather's death was relatively close to Chuseok, his family decided to combine those two dates, but that is not usually done. Most Korean families are still very traditional, and you will see grave "mounds" scattered all over most hillsides not just in cemeteries, as tradition dictates being buried as high up a hill/mountain as possible.

Here is a picture from one of the times I went with his family for the remembrance ritual and grave cleaning. (edit: spoilered for huge)
    Spoiler: show

My husband has said he does not want to continue with the traditional Korean way of burial and ritual and wants to be cremated. I agree and want the same, though we're not sure what to do about the ashes... I guess it's something we'll have to figure out once we get older and we can talk to our kids about it more.

Of course people get some comfort from it. The thing though, is that they could just as easily get the same comfort from something else. Something that isn't so wasteful.

    wow, what a terrific audience

I'll acknowledge some people take some solace from these commercialized burial sites, but that's no benefit in the long run or for the collective human populace. That's why I said it's selfish. Furthermore, if people were void of this perceived solace, would they no longer be able to cope with or get through the death of a family member? I'd say they'd be just fine even if they couldn't go look at and litter around a rock.

It's not kindheartedness and compassion that has led to the cemeteries and funeral homes business as it exists today. Sure they're fulfilling a demand, but that's kinda a chicken-or-the-egg issue now at this point. I've seen families take on significant debt just to bury a family member how they think they're supposed to. Unfortunately, it's a practice that isn't going anywhere, which just leaves those who abhor the practice to drunkenly rant and ramble full retard on a forum.

Have you been to one of the cremation halls in Korea? They are these huge aisles that are floor to ceiling cubes that are a little less than a 1m across. Inside people put a picture of the person, and a little memento or two, and then the urn with their ashes. If you go on a weekend there's just tons of people strolling around like their window shopping for souls. It's really bizarre, and also apparently fairly expensive to keep an urn there.

challenging the status quo = saying people don't get comfort from things run as a business. gotcha

We should stop all these massage parlors. It's only run as a business, so people must just be brainwashed into getting comfort out of them. CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO GUYS.

[edit] protip: no one has said it isn't a business. No one has said there aren't other alternatives. The dude originally said people don't move on out of it. That was the specific part that was retarded.

You're really misrepresenting what was said. He didn't say people don't get comfort from it. He said that the point of it is to make money, not to console people. However, in order to make money, the first thing they have to do is convince people that they will be consoled by purchasing their services (the more the better, to show your dead relative how much you really loved them, obviously). And as I expanded on in my other posts, this is almost certainly a learned behavior, and therefore the fact that people currently use it as a means of coping is irrelevant. They can and will find other ways of coming to terms with death.

Might want to check on those reading skills, give people the benefit of the doubt if you find their phrasing ambiguous, or better yet, ask them what they mean. Communication is a two-way street, and calling someone retarded because of ambiguous language or a misunderstanding of intent is, well, retarded.

What Roranora said made sense to me. It wasn't really worded correctly, but I understood what they were getting at. Why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch over semantics?

I imagine its being in too deep and just not wanting to back down and look dumb even if it means you weren't entirely wrong but other people might think you were dumb on the internet for a few minutes then move on but its still in the back of your head?

I'm no mind reader, but most people would rather argue an illogical blitherfest and play the real OG for 8 pages then go "Well fuck, I guess it could be seen that way" which in their eyes would be admitting some internet weakness the other OG's could attack on.

... These are just basic examples.. also Imagine someone will go "Welcome to the internet" so I should throw it in here too.

Considering he had to sound like pulling teeth to just admit some people get comfort. I doubt this. The point for BUSINESSES is to make money. The point many people use it is to console themselves. That is what we are stressing. You keep repeating that like we don't get the business side, we do, and we are fine with it.

Again, you are arguing about things I am not arguing against (outside of learned behavior makes it irrelevant. Again, do you poop in the back yard like CS? Learned behavior doesn't devalue something. Majority of the shit we do in life is learned.). I really couldn't care less what people decide to do with their bodies when they die. I don't care if we all get cremated, buried, or shot off into space. That is all irrelevant to me. Just because there are other ways people can cope, doesn't mean this way must not help people cope.

I think I get my "panties in a twist over it" because it's the same shit I hear all the time. People cope through death through sadness, humor, being alone, being with company, etc. etc. Maybe people need to stop pointing fingers and playing the internet autism of "HEY DON'T USE THAT IT'S ONLY CULTURE TELLING YOU TO." And let people grieve they way they want to. Dealing with death fucking sucks for some people. And that's ok.

Not to mention that for some religions, cremation would actually be offensive. My late wife's family was Jewish. Not only was she buried, she was flown up to the cemetery refrigerated, not embalmed. But the bling is pure overkill (and didn't happen).
