A geisha is by very definition an artist or entertainer. Could almost compare their lifestyle to that of a samurai in that they dedicated their lives to the arts, only with less lethality. Should be more outraged that Perry puts herself on the same level as them and/or the costume butchery rather than whatever racist connotations the article is trying to drum up.

As a white, rich lady in the developed world, she's allowed to take symbols and meanings from another culture and represent them for her own amusement (and the amusement of other privileged people). Dressing up as 'black-face' is more comparable to dressing up as 'asian-face' with taped-back/squinty eyes and yellow skin.

I wouldn't ever compare that on the same level to dressing up as a geisha, samurai, ninja, or whatever. It's pretty silly to try to say that cultural costumes are only to be worn by people of that culture, and anyone else who does has to be a racist. Perhaps if done to intentionally in a way to mock/defame/insult the culture, you could make the argument... but otherwise you're really stretching.
