40-Foot Sinkhole Eats 8 Corvettes at Museum
(Newser) – A 40-foot sinkhole opened up under the National Corvette Museum's Sky Dome this morning, swallowing eight cars. The sinkhole opened sometime before 5:30am, cutting off power to the landmark in Bowling Green, Ky., by 5:39am, the Courier-Journal reports. That set off a fire alarm, but when emergency crews arrived, they found the sinkhole instead. No one was injured in the incident.
The museum is open today, but the Dome is off limits. Emergency personnel have allowed the museum to remove one car—the almost priceless last surviving 1983 model, which didn't fall into the hole—but are insisting the rest stay put until engineers can assess the situation. The museum has confirmed that the following cars dropped into the sinkhole, according to WBKO:
1993 ZR-1 Spyder *
2009 ZR-1 Blue Devil *
1962 Black Corvette
1984 PPG Pace Car
1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette
1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette
2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette
2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette
* On loan from General Motors.
^ thats scary as shit. Sink holes are fucking random and terrifying
yeah, sinkholes are about the only thing more terrifying than Yellowstone erupting next, due to the extreme randomness. wtf at attacking collector corvettes
Also, a rational fear of sinkholes is yet another reason not to live in Florida. The whole state is essentially a gigantic sinkhole waiting to happen.

Guess which state doesn't have that problem? California, bitches. Awww yeeeaah. Earthquakes over sinkholes any day.
I have a feeling that the massive scale of fracking taking place along the San Andreas fault will shake alot of shit up in the future.
I think the drilling technologies can advance and get to levels where we can actually alleviate tectonic stress or possibly combat perpetual hot spots and dangerous flows. Of course, while the motivation is to suck out hydrocarbons however possible, things like that aren't ever going to be the focus. Having seen a lot stages of well life and well services, I know it's not all entirely useless or unhelpful. Good luck turning Oil&Gas into pro-earth's-crust peoples though.
Jeopardy drama lol, haters gonna hate.
Speaking of fracking

Rural county hour south of Pittsburgh had a gas well blow up 2 days ago and its still aflame, 1 person missing and presumed dead, they can't get it put out.
that's why Boots & Coots guys are badasses. Of course the industry has all sorts of problems, but with a few of those obvious glaring issues, there are tons of talented, hard working, quickly responding, on-call people that do incredible tasks many couldn't or wouldn't do. I've seen kicks, shallow gas pockets, and one rig burn down in western OK, with the derrick crushing a multitude of surface equipment.
Just remember all of these incredible scenes are the worker bees only. The risks are mitigated, but yet ever-present, and we liked to joke that it's all ran by people who are "too far away from the wellhead." Many of the technologies, including hydraulic fracturing, could be differently executed to not only not harm, but also benefit the earth and its present life. The greater problems are the rich and powerful squelching out other sources of energy, amplifying the reckless lust for fossil fuels. Both the operators and the service companies are neither nimble and able nor open to a drastic change in their goals or services. Schlumberger and Halliburton (my 1st employer after college <_>; ) are never going to get out of bed with the huge operators like Shell and BP and prioritize some new+mom&pop geothermal energy company for example. The problem(s) is(are) too interwoven and systemic.
Halliburton is a fucking abomination and I could give a shit less about some lame utopian vision of the good they could be doing with the awesome technology and potential they are wasting(allegedly). Everyone involved in the oil and gas industry are all guilty of fucking everyone's quality of life up for generations and more to come. Whether they are aware of their contributions or simply an ignorant pawn matters not to me, nor to the countless lives lost due to the industry.
What a waste of energy even typing that bullshit. I should be watching workaholics.
Halliburton doesn't do drilling technologies though, so clearly understanding well services is not something you've got going. They do own a bits company and minor Sperry directional technologies, for full disclosure.
Drilling companies are those are companies like Cactus, H&P, Lantern, etc. and in many cases employ more of the fatalities or the extreme injuries that have happened. (The industry as a whole is to blame, I'm not removing fault from service companies or operators -- merely differentiating)
You can hate a company, but you've lost already at that point. What is Halliburton anyway? Dick Cheney sucks, yes, and well enough removed, except he still gets rich when Oil&Gas do. And I'm sure douchebags I'll never meet in suits in Houston and Dubai make numerous questionable decisions. But a hard working guy in the '10s and '20s was probably a pretty good guy and businessman. And Erle P was a gnarly name. Same true for the Schlumberger brothers.
And this thread is comparable to Workaholics.
Holy shit. This is why I no longer read comments sections on Salon, MotherJones, Huffpo, etc. I'm fucking thrilled BG now has their own resident shilltard.

In what might be the greatest-ever Valentine’s Day prank, a group of Shanghai singles purchased every odd-numbered seat for a Feb. 14 showing of Beijing Love Story. Their sole purpose: disrupting lovey-dovey dates. “Want to see a movie on Valentine’s Day?” asks a message posted by an organizer. “Sorry, you’ll have to sit separately. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
Tell that to the millions of Chinese who will be spending the day in the absence of a date. With a population of 1.3 billion, China naturally has hefty share of the world’s singletons. This is compounded by a dramatic gender imbalance. Thanks to the one-child policy and preference for sons, there are an estimated 34 million ‘surplus men’ in China — a whole lot of lonely hearts.
Luckily, the country’s unattached have a history of being awesome; they’ve even got their own day. Since the 1990s, Nov. 11 has been celebrated as Singles Day. It was picked because the numerals — 11/11 — are said to look like ‘bare branches,’ a Chinese term for bachelors. It started as an occasion to get together for a meal, but has since morphed into a multi-billion dollar orgy of online shopping.
Valentine’s day is also celebrated (if you’re into that type of thing). As I left my apartment block this morning, an older gentleman entered through the lantern-drapped gate, a bouquet of pink and white flowers tucked under his arm. All of Beijing’s best restaurants have been booked up table-for-two by table-for-two.
The self-described “computer nerd” that spearheaded the Shanghai theater stunt said he was just trying to do something nice for fellow singles. He initially tried to buy all the the tickets in the theater, he told the Shanghai Morning Post, but was turned down. Things came together when he started a campaign on a crowd-funding site and, working with fellow singles, snapped up the requisite seats; behold:

The best part may be the comments it generated online. For every “No wonder you’re single,” there were witty rejoinders and high-fives to spare. “No choice but to go on a blind date now,” joked one commenter, according to a translation by ChinaSmack. “Now most lovers will go to the hotel directly,” quipped another.
Gazing at the checkerboard seats, one netizen had this to offer: “If he bought the white seats, he could’ve saved nine tickets.” Unromantic and cheap? You have won my heart.
