Clay Aiken wins primary election, opponent Keith Crisco dies suddenly

Keith Crisco, 71, was preparing to concede the party primary election to Mr Aiken when he fell at his home in North Carolina, local media reported.

Mr Aiken led by fewer than 400 votes out of nearly 28,500 cast on 6 May.

The death leaves Mr Aiken likely to face Republican Congresswoman Renee Ellmers in November's general election.

Mr Crisco was a businessman and former state commerce secretary.

"He was a remarkable man with a tremendous dedication to his family and to public service," his family said in a statement.

Mr Aiken, a North Carolina native, rose to fame in 2003 as the runner-up on television programme American Idol, which pitted aspiring singing stars against one another for the audience's favour.

"I am stunned and deeply saddened by Keith Crisco's death," he said in a statement posted on his campaign website.

"Keith came from humble beginnings. No matter how high he rose - to Harvard, to the White House and to the governor's cabinet - he never forgot where he came from."

Ms Ellmers was elected to North Carolina's 2nd House of Representatives district in the Republican wave of 2010, with 49% of the vote.

In 2012, the district was redrawn to give the Republican Party an advantage and she was re-elected with 56% of the vote.

"Nigger Love A Watermelon Ha! Ha! Ha!" merits the distinction of the most racist song title in America. Released in March 1916 by Columbia Records, it was written by actor Harry C. Browne and played on the familiar depiction of black people as mindless beasts of burden greedily devouring slices of watermelon.

I came across this gem while researching racial stereotypes. I was a bit conflicted on whether the song warranted a listen. Admittedly, though, beneath my righteous indignation, I was rather curious about how century-old, overt racism sounded and slightly amused by the farcical title. When I started the song, the music that tumbled from the speakers was that of the ever-recognizable jingle of the ice cream truck. (For the record, not all ice cream trucks play this same song, but a great many of them do.)

What's the proper response from a Catholic perspective to a rise in secularism in the west? To train more exorcists, of course.

The decline of religious belief in the West and the growth of secularism has “opened the window” to black magic, Satanism and belief in the occult, the organisers of a conference on exorcism have said.

The six-day meeting in Rome aims to train about 200 Roman Catholic priests from more than 30 countries in how to cast out evil from people who believe themselves to be in thrall to the Devil.

The conference, “Exorcism and Prayers of Liberation”, has also attracted psychiatrists, sociologists, doctors and criminologists in what the Church called a “multi-disciplinary” approach to exorcisms.

Giuseppe Ferrari, from GRIS, a Catholic research group that organised the conference, said there was an ever growing need for priests to be trained to perform exorcisms because of the increasing number of lay people tempted to dabble in black magic, paganism and the occult.

“We live in a disenchanted society, a secularised world that thought it was being emancipated, but where religion is being thrown out, the window is being opened to superstition and irrationality,” said Mr Ferrari.

The abandonment of religion “inevitably leads people to ask questions about the existence of evil and its origins”, he told Adnkronos, an Italian news agency.
About 250 priests were trained as exorcists in Italy, but many more were needed, the conference organisers claimed.

“Just in the dioceses of Rome, around a third of calls that are received are requests for the services of an exorcist,” said Fr Cesar Truqui, a priest and exorcist from Switzerland and a member of the Legionaries of Christ, a conservative Catholic order.

In the popular imagination, exorcisms evoke images of black-clad priests holding aloft silver crucifixes while trying to rid frothing, wild-eyed victims of Satanic possession.

The Church tries to play down the more lurid associations but at the same time insists that the Devil exists and must be fought on a daily basis.

“Exploring the theme of demonic possession does not mean causing general paranoia, but creating awareness of the existence of the Devil and of the possibility of possession,” Fr Truqui told Vatican Radio. “It happens rarely but you can fight it with God, with prayer, with Marian devotion.”

Demonic possession manifests itself in people babbling in foreign languages, shaking uncontrollably and vomiting nails, pieces of metal and shards of glass, according to those who believe in the phenomenon.

Those thought to be possessed are supposed to undergo the official Catholic rite of exorcism, which involves a consecrated priest invoking the name of God, as well as various saints, to cast out their demons.

Pope Francis has frequently alluded to the Devil in his homilies and addresses since being elected to succeed Benedict XVI last March.

In a homily this week, he said that the Devil was behind the persecution of early Christian martyrs, who were murdered for their faith. The “struggle between God and the Devil” was constant and ongoing, he said.

A Calgary woman who was found guilty of putting pins in food at a Calgary Co-op location is suing the grocery chain for defamation and is seeking $8 million in damages.

In 2012, Tatyana Granada was found guilty of mischief and trespassing in connection to the placing of pins, needles and other objects into bakery and dairy products at the Oakridge Co-op. The offences occurred in 2010.
Granada was sentenced to three years in prison and was released on March 6, 2014 after serving her time. The 47-year-old is currently on parole with the following conditions:

Must check-in with her parole officer on a regular basis
Must see a psychologist
Must check-in with the CPS
She is not permitted to leave Calgary unless she provide notice to her parole officer

In court documents obtained by CTV Calgary, Granada has launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the grocery store. Granada says Co-op is responsible for the shame and loss of family honour her husband incurred which she says eventually led to his suicide.

The plaintiff, who is originally from Latvia, alleges Co-op is responsible for the fact she is unable to secure employment and the grocery chain has caused her emotional distress. Granada says she has no income and is a widow left to raise her two children on her own.

A representative with Co-op say the company has not been served and is not aware of a pending lawsuit involving Tatyana Granada.

The paperwork Granada filed does indicate she is 'ready to discuss an out-of-court settlement with a preliminary compensation for the caused harm. It could be based in a humanitarian principle without a public disclosure.'

Tatyana Granada plans to act as her own legal representation.

Video shows kids shocked in Florida pool

HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – It's three minutes of video that may make you cringe when you see it–children unable to escape a pool as it becomes electrically charged.

The video released by Hialeah Police Wednesday completes a better picture of what happened at the Palm West Garden apartments last month.

It starts out as a very typical Sunday afternoon at the pool. Kids are playing. Parents and grandparents are supervising when suddenly something goes wrong.

The video shows a little girl touch the hand railing and immediately she is shocked. Her father quickly reacts, getting shocked himself as he pulls her out. Her body appears lifeless. As the pool empties out, one child is still attached to the railing unable to move. Electricity makes your muscles contract which means you can't move. That becomes quite clear when Freddie Cabrera enters the video. He reaches in for his granddaughter Daniella. As he touches her, he feels a charge which causes him to fall back as he's pulling her out. His quick reaction may have saved her life.

Today crime scene tape still surrounds the pool deck and the pool is drained. Thus far a preliminary investigation has pointed to unconnected ground wires in the pool pump house. The wires are supposed to take electrical charges to the ground, away from the pool.

Crime scene photos show the wires hanging in the air rather than heading toward the ground.

CBS4 reported the pool passed a 40 year inspection last year. Also, CBS4 has learned that the pool passed two health department inspections last year. The inspection forms go well beyond the health of the water, but have boxes and requirements that the pool be up to electrical code. The pool passed. But just four months later, the incident happened–which brings about a lot more questions about the integrity of these inspections. If people are checking this out and passing it, how could this happen? CBS4 is continuing to investigate.

Sadly a similar incident happened at a residence in FL about a month ago. Two kids were swimming in the pool and one kid went underwater and was electrocuted. The jolt was so strong it catapulted him out of the water. As it turns out, the light in the deep end of the pool was not grounded properly so as much as 120v was leaking into the pool. Earlier in the year the parents had called out a contractor to look at the light because it wasn't turning on, so someone didn't do their job properly.
