I went to Catholic school from K-12th grade and I don't remember ever being oppressive or hateful to anyone, and if I was, it was purely not intentional or as a result of being too young to know the difference.

Just because high-profile religious groups like the WBC are in the news all the time doesn't mean that every religious person is trying to deny rights to people. There are plenty of religious people who, even against the accepted doctrine of the church, would be perfectly glad to see things like gay marriage. Who preach acceptance and tolerance and that it is not our place as humans to judge. (Which is actually in the Bible, though I can't remember where, exactly. I don't exactly review it on a regular basis.) There are clergy who believe this, as well. Imparting change takes time. The gay rights movement is well on its way but look at racism in this country. It's a slow and arduous process. To throw a blanket statement like that on a vast group of people because of some very public sects is unfair.

I mean, disclaimers are not legally required. They are used to cover company's asses. My example assumes that the church would prefer a disclaimer to a multimillion dollar lawsuit every time some crazy bumps off her kids.

    You know, like WWE.

    Fair enough.

Though disclaimers are generally not for the 99% of normal people who know better, they're for the 1% of people who think they can do things like eat sunscreen, or stick their finger in hot soup, or use a blow dryer in the shower.

True story which served to stop me from attending any church at all:
My friend is pregnant with her second child and is not married. She was told that the church could not and would not support her during her pregnancy because it is not God's will. She is welcome to attend, but they will basically pretend she is not pregnant until she has the baby. Then the church will support her and the baby as if she was a woman whose husband left her....

I mean, I didn't go trying to sacrifice any of my children or anything, but the actions of this church served to reinforce my distaste for religion and affirm that I made the right decision in refusing to support religious organizations of any kind.

Bruce Willis' daughter walks NYC topless to protest Instagram

Who says Millennials are apathetic? Scout Willis — daughter of Bruce and Demi, graduate of Brown University — took to the sidewalks of New York yesterday in protest.
    In topless protest, no less.
Willis, 22, was challenging Instagram‘s practice of nipple censorship. (Have you heard of the #FreeTheNipple movement? It is a real thing.) So post-march (hers was a solo effort), Willis posted photos of her breezing past storefronts in just her skirt and perusing the posies at a deli (next to a sign that says “squeeze”), because that kind of activity is legal in the Big Apple.
You can see the allegedly not suitable for Instagram (and very likely not suitable for work) Twitter shots here and here.
    links to pics. NSFW, obviously:

How was she not able to gather any friends for this protest? lol Isn't there a famous NY woman who does this daily? Not to mention the topless book club.

SWAT throws flash grenade into crib, child severely burned

HABERSHAM COUNTY, GA (WSB/CNN) - A SWAT team drug raid went horribly wrong when a "flash-bang" grenade critically burned a toddler that authorities did not know was there.

"Those cops busted in the door and threw the grenade without even looking first," said Alecia Phonesavanh, the child's mother, on Thursday. "And it went right in his playpen and exploded on his pillow, right in his face."

The 19-month-old boy was sent to a burn unit for treatment and has been induced into a coma.

A confidential informant told the county's special response team a drug deal was made in the home. The team went in on a "no-knock" warrant" for an alleged methamphetamine dealer at 2 a.m. Wednesday.

"There was no clothes, no toys, nothing to indicate that there was children present in the home," said Sheriff Joey Terrell. "If there had been then we'd have done something different."

The Phonesavanhs said they had just moved into the home from Wisconsin after their own home had burned down. The family of six said they did not have insurance, so they had set up a fund to cover medical expenses.

The 30-year-old man authorities were looking for was not there at the time. He was arrested later at another house on a felony drug charge of meth distribution.

Terrell said a pastor had spoken with the team, and he described the members as emotionally distraught. He pledged they would "be more careful the next time."

"You're trying to minimize anything that could go wrong, and in this case the greatest thing went wrong," Terrell said.

A couple in London, Ont., face charges of forcible confinement and failing to provide the necessaries of life after their 10-year-old nephew was found malnourished and locked in a bedroom of a house that police describe as "filthy" and "squalid."

Police said they found the boy locked in a bedroom that has an ensuite bathroom. Police believe the boy had been confined there for 18 months to two years.

The boy, who police say was underweight and suffering from malnutrition, was taken to hospital.

He has since been released from hospital and is in the care of the Children's Aid Society.

The couple facing charges have a biological child who was also living in the house at the time. That child, whose age and gender have not been released, is also now in the care of the CAS. Police said there is no evidence that the couple's biological child was confined inside the house.

Police were alerted to the situation by the CAS, which received a tip from the public.

Police along with a CAS worker went to the house on Thursday afternoon. Originally they found no one home. The owners were contacted and when they arrived at the house police went inside, and the boy was discovered.

Police said the boy had access to a toilet and shower, but say the entire house was "filthy."

Police said they've had no previous dealings with the occupants of the house.

Police are not releasing the name of the couple charged to protect the identity of the children. The police investigation is continuing.

In a news release, police said they've had no previous dealings with the occupants of the house. However, in 2007 the Children's Aid Society of London and Middlesex had "brief contact" with the family regarding another child who no longer lives in the home.

Police: SC motorcyclist fled from officers, posted GoPro video on YouTube

    MAULDIN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Mauldin man is facing multiple charges after police said he posted GoPro videos of himself fleeing from police on YouTube.

Mauldin police said 26-year-old Derek Kellett faces five different counts of reckless driving, all of which involve five separate clips uploaded to the YouTube.

Police said they received a tip on a social media site that led them to the videos, which they said showed the suspect reaching speeds upwards of 115 mph.

The videos were posted by the user RiderLifeStyle, according to police. One of the videos on the user's page is titled "Yamaha R6 Runs From Cops- Full High Speed Chase!!"

They said they were able to track him down pretty quickly after they saw the videos.

"My first reaction was 'wow,' how did this person not wreck?" said Sgt. Ben Ford with the Mauldin Police Department. "The speed at which he was going, in and out of traffic, just very bold driving and dangerous driving."

Police seized a computer, files and a GoPro camera that was reportedly used to film the incidents, officers said.

"We really take serious the driving he was doing and we don't want others to congratulate him because people could die from that behavior," said Ford.

At a bond hearing on Thursday, a judge gave Kellett $445 cash bond on each charge.
Dumbass. Best part is that he drives right by my school! Wee!

Fucking no-knock warrants. Why that shit hasn't been outlawed is beyond me. I wish there were readily available statistics on the safe capture rates of no-knock warrants vs. regularly executed warrants. It seems to me that storming into someone's house at 2 in the goddamn morning when they're sleeping (and especially when it's a family with kids) is a good fucking way to have a homeowner pull a gun and start blasting away at the people invading his house. No-knock warrants probably minimize risk for cops, but increase risk for civilians, and that's absolutely backwards from how it should be.

It reads like the CI told them information that did not include the family was living there, and had such young kids. Feels like they were expecting the drug dealer and any other people that might be involved with that, and not some new family with kids.

Never know what to expect in those situations except you hope no innocents are injured or in the way when you go in. Damn shame that kid got hurt... I would like to point out they did catch the guy and charged him with whatever they found during the raid. Not justifying what happened to the kid but to me, removing the kid from and shutting down the meth lab is a small win.
