That's not my experience at all. I disagree with all of that.

I would wager we are both working off of personal experience so I will share mine:

Until 6th grade I was in public school. No uniform and from what I remember no one gave a shit what anyone else was wearing. No issue there. From then on in private school it was a huge deal what you were wearing when outside of school. For me it was a relief to just wear the uniform every day and not worry about it. There were poorer people there on scholarship and some who had been displaced by Katrina. Their uniforms were never an issue.

In addition to that, I worked with a lot of teenagers, most of them black, at Target when I was in High School. They all spent their entire paychecks on clothes and sunglasses to look as baller as possible at school. I think that would have been less of an issue if they wore uniforms.

Highschoolers are always going to find ways to ball out with shoes and clothes and iphones, etc. Uniforms or not. They don't even count as poor in my book. The few years I had to wear uniforms(never went to private school), it was always stressful having to wash your clothes every other day or wear them again over cologne(no shame in my game lol I know I wasn't alone).

Again, uniforms were not cheap, the off-brand polos and khakis are priced maybe half as much as dockers, but them shits barely last a year lol You could probably get 6 pairs of shirts+3pants, all name-brand at outlet/thrift stores, for what 3 pairs of uniforms cost.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

School I student taught at was a charter school and required uniforms. The school was built to try and get kids away from two gang rival schools nearby. I would say 90% of the kids were on the free lunch program, most were either in foster care or staying with family while their parents were incarcerated. These kids for the most part were very poor. Having them do uniforms saved the guardians tons of money and yes, made sure no one felt they were poorer than the next student.

So I definitely think it depends on the school. I can't say for certain but I would imagine that school did subsidies to help pay for the uniforms if needed.

edit: With that said, saying schools having a dress code makes kids feel uncomfortable with their bodies is just silly. I would not want a kid coming naked into my classroom. A school in many ways is a teenager's job. Jobs require dress codes, schools require dress codes. It's really not that big a deal.

I'd definitely side more with uniforms if they were subsidized in any way growing-up. Hell, I remember having to buy new shoes for 1 school, stuck wearing those awful white BK's, aka Burger Kings lol

I didn't mind dress codes. My school required the whole suit and tie setup. Only wear my that stuff during professional meetings or occasions like weddings. But I don't mind wearing it. As the great Barney would say...

I think they are, to some extent. Maybe your school didn't have it, but like I mentioned, we had a uniform exchange program basically allowing people to get hand-me-downs. My family had quite a bit of money growing up and we weren't above getting used uniforms for school. Yes, one could argue that being affluent meant we were taking the uniforms away from kids who needed the assistance, but in my town that wasn't really a concern. Kids grow so damn fast it doesn't make sense to keep buying them at the rate they grow. And while the uniforms have changed, I know you can get uniform pieces for fairly good prices at Kmart and Walmart, and I have seen uniforms in Goodwill and the Salvation Army. I'm not 100% sure because I don't have any kids in the local school systems but I always see uniforms around department stores, especially around the beginning of the school year.

It definitely doesn't fall under welfare or anything like that but I know there are programs, even exchanges like I mentioned, that can ease some of the burden.

I didn't have the presence of mind or fashion sense to dress myself properly for school. I ended up wearing a lot of odd things that didn't help my reputation among my peers any. Even then, I sometimes wished my public school used uniforms, so that people would lose one reason to harass me. But on the other hand, I feel like I would have rebelled against it for taking away my individuality, which was the only thing I really had a claim to during my days of mandatory schooling. The only wall I had between myself and my constant tormentors was the notion that not changing myself and being unique is somehow more virtuous than changing myself to fit in.

Even now I can't decide which way of dress is better. I suppose similarly torn people are why both forms of dress code still exist. To me, one doesn't seem particularly superior to the other, but I guess uniforms would have stamped out the entire problem for shorts girl.

I wish I went through grade school in the last 5-10 years, individuality is so much more acceptable. Fashion trends are more ambiguous than ever lol Skinny jeans, mix-matching, and pastels aren't my style, but it's cool that there's more expression. Uniforms exist to make kids more docile, obedient, and train them to listen to their boss. Good idea for transitioning into the corporate world, but I wonder if there's any data that reflects the negatives that come with stifling expression/individuality.

I don't disagree, but my counterargument would be how many kids are truly expressing their individuality? A handful of kids are leaders and everyone else goes along with the trends they set to fit in.

Additionally, there are plenty of ways to express yourself beyond fashion. Even then, you can wear whatever you want outside of school hours. I'm just not seeing the negatives to having a school uniform. If it's a public school and some of the kids have a legitimate issue affording the uniform. obviously they should receive aid.

Trademark/copyright law is such a shitfest...

Online outrage after artist trademarks pi
    6.7k Shares

By Rob Price on June 02, 2014 Email Twitter

Is it possible to trademark a 3,000-year old mathematical symbol? Under American law, the answer is apparently yes.

Wired reports that multiple sellers on online marketplace Zazzle were shocked to find last week that their designs had been taken down as a result of a cease and desist notice by one Paul Ingrisano, alleging that their work infringed upon his registered trademark.

The trademark violation in question? The symbol for the mathematical constant pi, which has been in constant use for the past three millennia. Ingrisano filed for copyright in 2012.

The trademark registered refers to “the mark consist[ing] of the pi mathematical symbol followed by a period,” but nonetheless, Ingrisano’s lawyer Ronald Millet’s cease and desist letter (embedded below) forced the suspension of sale of all goods on the website containing the mathematical symbol in any form, regardless of the existence of the additional period.

Designer Jez Kemp was emailed by Zazzle to inform him that they “will be removing all products in your store with the mathematical symbol 'pi' as it relates to goods related to this trademark.” This is despite the fact—as a quick look at his website shows—his own stylised designs incorporating pi make no use of a period.

Additionally, Kemp points out on his blog that even when one looks past the absurdity of claiming an ancient Greek universal mathematical symbol as your exclusive trademark, this isn’t how trademark law works. Trademarks refer to a specific logo, not any and all usages of a term, symbol or logo. Apple does not own the exclusive rights to the word apple in all contexts, for example.

A look at the details of the trademark application show that while it's described as “Illustration: Drawing with word(s)/letter(s)/number(s) in Stylized form Typeset,” there is no actual graphical representation of the logo, just “pI” in a serif typeface and the aforementioned description of the “pi mathematical symbol followed by a period.”

This lack of clarity over the nature of the logo trademarked allows for abuses like we have just seen, and goes against the spirit of trademark law; it is, Kemp says, like if “McDonalds [were to claim] the letter M as a trademark. The trademark is the combination of style and symbol, not the symbol itself.”

Wired spoke to Mark Lemley, a law professor at Stanford University, who said: “if you want to sell T-shirts and on the tag your brand name is the symbol pi, I think that’s a reasonable trademark. But if what you want to do is actually prevent people from using the symbol pi on a T-shirt, then I think you’re missing the point of trademark law.”

Kemp is just one of many complainants: Zazzle’s forums have been flooded with angry messages from customers and sellers at what is perceived to be a gross abuse of trademark law.

“I am enraged!” Says one poster; “Here many of us are trying to spread the mathematical truth, and some lunatic thinks he owns part of the Greek language and its usage as part of the language of the universe! Do you think you can even make t-shirts without pi being utilized in the process somehow?!”

So why does Paul Ingrisano own the trademark to Pi? Well, he lists his occupation as working at “Pi Production Corp” on his Facebook page, and as the owner of “Pi apparels” on LinkedIn, which may go some way towards explaining his affinity for the mathematical symbol.

Zazzle has since bowed to pressure and reinstated the products containing the pi symbol. Whether Ingrisano will seek to take this further—and whether he will be laughed straight out of the courtroom—remains to be seen.

    Here’s hoping, though.

    From another article:

    http://www.cbc.ca/newsblogs/yourcomm...s-the-web.html
While many were pleased by Zazzle's decision to ignore the cease and desist letter from Ingrisano's lawyer, the design community is now keeping a close eye on the artist.

Several Zazzle forum users have made note of the fact that Ingrisano also has a pending trademark registration for the use of "I<3" — which means "I love" in netspeak.

When you're wearing shorts so short your booty hanging out, TO SCHOOL, you have a problem. School is supposed to be preparation for the work force, would you dress like that to work? Obviously not.

Also, if its so hot, why is she wearing a sweater in her interview with CBC?

Fake officer charged after pulling over real one

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A 20-year-old is behind bars for allegedly activating illegal police lights on his car while behind an officer.

Matthew Michael Lee McMahon, 20, was spotted by a detective in an unmarked with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office while Monday driving on International Golf Parkway at 8:35 p.m., according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. When the Det. Chance Anderson passed McMahon, McMahon allegedly activated a red and blue light bar on his 1999 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

"I pulled over to confront the individual. At which point, he pulled up next to me. Kind of gave me the 'slow down' look and pointed this finger at me," Anderson told FCN.

The detective pulled over on the shoulder of the road and McMahon drove away. The SJSO detective conducted a traffic stop on McMahon, who allegedly provided numerous spontaneous statements on the roadside as to why he was in possession of emergency lights.

"I was shocked to, number one, see somebody affecting a traffic stop on me," Detective Chance Anderson said. "We are a rather large department, but I still know a majority of our law enforcement officers."

Detectives continued the investigation and determined McMahon has never been a certified law enforcement officer.

Anderson told FCN he has been on the force for 10 years and has never seen anything like this. The ironic thing? Detective Anderson's work includes catching police impersonators.

McMahon has also been charged with unlawfully displaying blue lights. He is currently being held in the St. Johns County Detention Facility on bonds totaling $5,500.
    lulz.

Okay even the unmarked cars in Florida have the telltale yellow license plate (it's a dead giveaway) so that guy is dumb as a box of shit.

7 die after trying to retrieve 75 cents in well in Cambodia
A man dropped the money into the well and went inside it to try and get the money, but due to a lack of oxygen, died in the well. Fellow villagers tried to help the man, but also suffered the same fate.

A man in Cambodia (not pictured) died after trying to retrieve the equivalent of 75 cents from a well. The money, like that above, also resulted in six more people dying trying to rescue him.

Seven people died in Cambodia after a man dropped the equivalent of 75 cents into a well.

The man tried to get the money back, but fell into a coma at the bottom of the well because of a lack of oxygen.

After villagers realized the man was missing they climbed into the well to try and help, but perished themselves.

"When relatives and villagers saw the man collapsed at the well's bottom, they subsequently got into the well to help him and they all also fainted and died in the well," Capt. Muy Norn told Koh Santepheap Daily.

Among the seven who perished were two women.

The deaths took place on Saturday night.
