Former CNN intern unearths the network's doomsday video

Never underestimate the power of a bored intern.

Jalopnik writer Michael Ballaban revealed Monday that when he was a bored intern at “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer back in 2009, he unearthed a piece of journalistic lore: Ted Turner’s “Doomsday Video.” That is, the video that CNN founder Turner commissioned shortly after launching the original Cable News Network, to be played in the event of the world’s end.

Decades after Turner had reportedly first declared, “We’ll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event,” journalists continued to speculate about the network’s final video. In 1988, The New Yorker went straight to the source, asking Turner what exactly he thought the American people would want to see in their final moments.

“We need to totally disarm,” Turner told the magazine. “Because, just as with guns, if you've got nuclear weapons, you're eventually going to use them. … Normally, when a TV station begins and ends the broadcast day, it signs on and off by playing the national anthem. But with CNN — a 24-hour-a-day channel — we would only sign off once, and I knew what that would mean. So we got the combined Armed Forces marching bands together — the Army, Navy, Marine and Air Force bands — and took them out to the old CNN headquarters, and we had them practice the national anthem for a videotaping. Then, as things cranked up, I asked if they'd play 'Nearer, My God, to Thee' to put on videotape just in case the world ever came to an end. That would be the last thing CNN played before we — before we signed off.”

The New Yorker reporters behind that article described watching the video with Turner, but the image of the Armed Forces marching bands playing “Nearer My God, to Thee,” the hymn that, as legend has it, was played as the Titanic sank, remained concealed from the public. The doomsday video continued to pop up in conversation, including in a 2001 New York Daily News article. But until Monday, it was confined to the CNN archives, only to be broadcast in the event of the ultimate global catastrophe. It can now be viewed in all its 1980s glory at Jalopnik.

“Restriction: HFR till the end of the world confirmed” reads the disclaimer, in bright red font, on the video slugged “TURNER DOOMSDAY VIDEO” in the CNN video database.

“Hold for release,” Ballaban writes. “CNN, once ever so thorough in its factchecking, knew that the last employee alive couldn’t be trusted to make a call as consequential as one from the Book of Revelation. The end of the world must be confirmed.”

Other sources taken from nearly-verbatim include a CBS News article, a Liberty Institute press release, a local newspaper article, and various Internet sites.

In Carson’s book, he writes about being caught plagiarizing in college and being given the chance to rewrite the paper after it was discovered.

The investigation, details of which were obtained by the Washington Times via a Freedom of Information Act request, found that the man was blocked from accessing porn hundreds of times from October 2013 to May 2014. His name was withheld from the agency's report. He was then blocked about 3,000 times in both June and July, and more than 6,000 times in August, according to network firewall logs.

The employee, who works for the Pentagon’s Defense Finance Accounting Service (DFAS), told investigators that he had tried to view porn at work because he did not have a personal computer.

A 64-year-old woman accused of setting up traps on bike trails in North Vancouver is facing criminal charges after her actions were allegedly caught on video.

RCMP say she was seen on video setting up logs, branches and rocks after two mountain bikers decided to buy, install and monitor security cameras on public pathways.

WHITE SPRINGS, Fla. — One teenage girl accused of plotting to kill her older brother suffered years of physical abuse and was sexually abused by her uncle, authorities said Wednesday.

The 15-year-old girl, whom USA TODAY is not identifying because the 3rd Circuit state attorney has not decided yet whether to charge her as an adult, allegedly shot her 16-year-old brother, Damien Kornegay, sometime Monday evening with a handgun retrieved from a locked room, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office spokesman. She told investigators that she was angry her brother beat her up earlier that day and faces a charge of premeditated murder.

The siblings' 11-year-old sister also is being held because she is accused of keeping watch while her older sister broke into the bedroom through a window to get the 9mm handgun, Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said Wednesday. She, too, is not being identified because of her age and faces a charge of premeditated murder.

"We don't have this in our community," Hunter said. "This is the stuff nightmares are made of."

The gun was unloaded but the teen loaded the weapon before shooting her brother, the sheriff said.

Police documents released Wednesday said the 15-year-old's uncle was convicted of molesting her in 2010. They also say the children's mother at one point discovered the siblings having sex.

The children's parents — Keith Kornegay, 37, and Misty Kornegay, 33 — had been away since Sunday, authorities said. They were arrested Tuesday, charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm and are accused of failing to properly supervise their children.

A judge set the parents' bond at $20,000 Wednesday and ordered that they cannot have unsupervised contact with their children. The Florida Department of Children and Families has taken a 3-year-old boy also in their home into custody.

Police in White Springs, a town of about 800 people 70 miles west of Jacksonville, Fla., learned of the crime a little before 10 p.m. ET Monday after receiving a phone call from the mother of a friend of the 11-year-old. The girl told her friend that she had run away and needed someone to pick her up at a Dollar General store, according to a police report.

When the woman arrived she found the older sister there, too, who mentioned that something might be wrong with another sibling at home, the report said. Officers who responded talked to the teen.

As she spoke, she applied makeup and "would not maintain eye contact and appeared emotionless," according to their report.

But soon she started crying and told the officers that her brother had beaten her, thrown her into her bedroom, and locked the door. She told officers that when he went to sleep her younger sister unlocked the door.

The teen said she then shot her brother, according to the report.

Columbia County deputies, who were contacted to check the house, found Damien dead in the living room. The weapon was on a blanket in the hallway.

"For our community to have this, there's going to be 100,000 whys," Hunter said. The older sister told investigators that at times for years she had been locked in a room with just a bucket and a blanket, and at one point one of the sisters had been removed from school.

The teen had told police that her parents were due to return around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The children's father is a trucker, Hunter said. And the children's mother occasionally would accompany her husband on his hauls, leaving the youngsters under Damien's supervision.


That was a contributing factor to charges being filed, the sheriff said.

"These kids are hurting," said Veronica Thomas, pastor of White Springs Congregational Holiness Church. She spoke to them soon after the shooting.

Columbia County is home to about 70,000 residents and hasn't had a homicide in more than a year, officials said.

Because the children's parents also are under arrest — all had their first appearances in court scheduled Wednesday — any of the siblings who might be released from state custody can't return home now.

Children arrested for crimes and treated as juveniles can be held in detention for a maximum of 21 days under Florida law but the judge has granted an extra nine days in this case.

"I may be forced to actually charge them as adults to hold them in juvenile detention until I can work something out," said Jeff Siegmeister, 3rd Circuit state attorney. "I don't know all of the facts yet."

The Florida toddler found dead after she was tossed from a St. Petersburg bridge was still alive before the fatal 60-foot plunge, police said Friday based on preliminary evidence. At a news conference following Thursday's horrific act, investigators didn't immediately know whether 5-year-old Phoebe Jonchuck was initially alive, and were awaiting the results of a medical examiner's report. A police officer who witnessed the crime — allegedly committed by her father, John Jonchuck Jr. — said he may have heard the girl scream but wasn't certain.

Police are still trying to piece together what led Jonchuck, 25, to allegedly take his daughter's life. The girl's mother, Michelle Kerr, said despite Jonchuck's "Jekyll and Hyde" personality and their rocky past relationship, she never imagined he would turn his rage toward Phoebe. "She would always say 'I love you' to him," a teary-eyed Kerr told NBC affiliate WFLA. "She loved her daddy."

Phoebe's body was recovered from the Tampa Bay around 1 a.m. Thursday, an hour after a St. Petersburg police officer said he saw Jonchuck hurl the girl over the railing. Jonchuck was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer. He was denied bond but is scheduled to return to Pinellas County court Monday over whether he wants to retain a court-appointed attorney.

Jonchuck had custody of Phoebe after Kerr said her multiple sclerosis had made it a struggle to care for the girl. Despite a history of domestic violence, Kerr told WFLA that her former relationship with Jonchuck appeared to be on the mend: The parents and Phoebe exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve. But she remains lost for a motive as to why Jonchuck would have allegedly harmed his daughter. "She was so lovable," Kerr added. "She was an amazing, amazing, amazing child."

Three 9-year-old students in upstate New York plotted in December to kill their fourth grade teacher with hand sanitizer, according to a police report.

The report, obtained by WLTX 19 in Buffalo, said the conniving classmates in Elba, a small town between Buffalo and Rochester, told fellow students they were going to kill their teacher right before winter break “by putting antibacterial products around the classroom.”

The Elba Elementary School teacher is highly allergic to hand sanitizer and banned it from the classroom, so the students planned to poison her with it.
