Actually, as someone who is involved in an alternative lifestyle, and know way too many people who are as well, the books are about as accurate of a portrayal of BDSM as the taming of sleeping beauty series is. There is absolutely no consent in the book, uses emotional blackmail to essentially get what he wants. And the scary part is there are a bunch of idiots who think this is what bdsm is and try to make themselves the next grey. And the even sadder part is it initially started as twilight fan fiction...

Women think this is the ideal form of a relationship that they aspire to, when real women who have been in relationships with men like this have met really quite terrible fates. It's not just a movie when you see the widespread influence it's having. If I see one more woman asking, "Where's my Christian Grey?" I'm going to fucking scream. Screw that book series and the movie for putting these shitty ideas of "romance" into impressionable women's heads. And the worst part is that it's not only young women, either. Women of all ages and demographics. Putting shit like that out there is dangerous for women. It's very disturbing.

I normally wanted to believe this. But never underestimate the stupidity of bored unsatisfied housewives who had 50 shades of shit as the first bit of mommy porn they ever read. Okay, I have read a lot of those and I've never come across a situation where a woman was beaten for failing to inform her man that she was calling her mother or where the man ignored the safe word and then made her feel bad about even attempting to use it. The type where she is only allowed to drive in the man-sanctioned car that he buys her, or work in the man-sanctioned job that he allows her to work at, or wear the man-sanctioned clothing, or talk to certain people such as family, or restrict her from being able to interact with any other men, at all. I have read plenty of Harlequin romance novels and never seen anything like that. At worst, some of them are fuzzy on consent in the heat of the moment (and yes, that is problematic), but none of them put a woman into a directly dangerous and abusive relationship.

There is a huge difference. I have been in a controlling relationship. I do believe it would have turned physically abusive if I hadn't gotten away. It isn't romantic. It isn't "Aw, look he loves her so much that he can't bear to share her!" That's taking away her sense of self and her personal autonomy. Sorry, but I have never in all my 34 years seen that kind of shit in a Harlequin romance novel.

Not to mention, not one single Harlequin romance novel has ever gained the amount of notoriety and widespread influence that this book has. There is definitely a trashy romance novel niche out in the market and probably plenty of avid Harlequin readers. But don't try to pretend like any of those novels have been even remotely as known as 50 Shades is.

Which is a very fair point. But don't pretend for a second that this book is going to be the major catalyst for people pulling sick and twisted shit. The article you linked is an idiot who got arrested for attempted sexual assault and he turned around and said he got it from Fifty Shades of Grey. Sometimes people are just sick and twisted to begin with. That's where I think you're getting hung up. You have a personal experience that causes you to react this way towards the book. The book isn't mommy porn. It's a trash novel that glorifies some pretty disgusting shit. Odds are if this book didn't exist that dude still would have pulled something similar sooner or later. Much like the Bible and the Quran, it's the instrument, not the hand that uses it as a person sees fit.

I'm far from the only person who feels this way. I'm probably one of the only people on BG who feel this way about the book and why it should have been burned at the stake rather than published, but I can assure you I am not the only person who thinks that this book and its potential influence can be very bad.

I'm more worried about the women who look toward this as an example of an ideal, romantic relationship than I am sick, twisted men. The men who would do this shit are fucked up beyond repair, but the women who have to endure it may face severe and dangerous repercussions from actively seeking out this type of relationship. I'm not okay with the way this shit glorifies abusive tactics that may land several people in the hospital. This is just one example. I certainly can't prove it, but how many unreported incidents have been caused by this, and how many will go unreported? We'll never know. And that's the problem. We don't know, no one can ever make any causal relationships between these things, but why fucking risk it? I already know some women are looking for this exact type of relationship and it makes me want to scream. This book and movie made them think this is the way romance is. I'm not just making this up. And I'm just not okay with anything that glorifies and promotes an abusive relationship.
