Burned as in censored? No. But I do think that shit like that needs to be given as little media attention as possible. Reduce the influence of it, if you will. I don't believe in censorship, but I also don't believe that this should have been given any media attention whatsoever.

I don't think you get how much you sound like Jack Thompson right now. Video games don't cause violence and books don't cause rape.

You are conflating influence with causation. Entertainment does not cause or prevent anything, but it can have major influence on impressionable minds.

Which is exactly what I'm talking about. I'd rather see women empower themselves to be their own person rather than let a man dictate their entire lives up to and including sex than fall prey to this kind of abusive relationship where they very well could end up dead. I recognize that one article in the media does not a correlation make, but I'm not foolish enough to believe that this book will have no influence over many of the women who read it.

Again, I have to keep saying that I've seen women asking where their own Christian Grey is, and that's disturbing. It's not a good trend for women to want to fall into controlling relationships. It's not a good trend for women to be willing to give up their autonomy in the name of "romance." I don't believe this is going to cause a giant upswing in the number of domestic abuse and rape cases, but I'm also not willing to put it aside as "just a book" when I've already seen evidence to the contrary.

Not rape, but I'm sure the book is responsible for a lot of sex related injuries since its release. Its my understanding that it breaks a lot of rules when it comes to participating in BDSM safely. The book is being seen as a "how to" guide for people who want to dabble in a little kink, instead of an actual knowledgeable source. And I wouldn't say it just affects how women see a relationship. There will be guys reading it who figure that since millions of women love the book, they should starting acting and treating women the way Grey does.

Never read the book, and only saw the first 15 minutes of the movie as required by work. He came across as a creepy stalker to me in that short amount of time and was so glad I didn't have to sit through any more. Yet women were coming out of the theatre all weekend, and the only complaints I heard was that there wasn't enough sex and you didn't get see any dick.

The book was outrageously popular before I remember hearing about it from the media, so that doesn't solve anything. The problem is a lack of education on the topic; the book is just a symptom.

Welp, while you silly Americans debate over this, at least the Canadian government knows what's what as far as abuse goes.

I'm more worried about the women who look toward this as an example of an ideal, romantic relationship than I am sick, twisted men. The men who would do this shit are fucked up beyond repair, but the women who have to endure it may face severe and dangerous repercussions from actively seeking out this type of relationship. I'm not okay with the way this shit glorifies abusive tactics that may land several people in the hospital. This is just one example. I certainly can't prove it, but how many unreported incidents have been caused by this, and how many will go unreported? We'll never know. And that's the problem. We don't know, no one can ever make any causal relationships between these things, but why fucking risk it? I already know some women are looking for this exact type of relationship and it makes me want to scream. This book and movie made them think this is the way romance is. I'm not just making this up. And I'm just not okay with anything that glorifies and promotes an abusive relationship.
Seriously you are making it out to sound these women and men have absolutely no free will or choice in the matter. This book is not the cause of abusive relationships. You were in a quasi abusive relationship before this book ever existed. I again state, any normal rational adult will see this as a work of fiction and in no way is indicative of a healthy loving relationship. You want to jump on the soapbox and complain about the people on the fringe like the dude in the article, no problem. But you're making this book out to be the next Satanic Verses. It's not. Stop attempting to rationalize people being fucking stupid by claiming undue influence from a book.

I think the book should have been published if there was a demand for it, but I wish there was not a demand for it. I mean, the supportive demographic for this does not even make sense and it is twilight fan fiction that is written about as well as... Twilight fan fiction.

A hipster/gay friend had the audiobook version on in his car at one point (hipster nirvana, the ultimate irony) and ever since that day I have pitied authors and feel their pain. pop culture is a fickle beast. The book is not well written, the subject matter is terrible, and it is wildly successful. Just why?

It sounds like Aks' problem is that, when exposed to this tripe, there are women who think they want it. "Where is my Christian Grey?" The issue is that these people are stupid. Don't blame the book for giving people a means of demonstrating that fact.

Tons of men and women already do though my standing issue is that some people use this as a guide to bdsm. Bad relationships happen in every fucking demographic so even if the book didn't exist it wouldn't stop abuse from happening.

I too have seen and heard people wanting their own "Christian grey" which could have multiple meanings. The ones that concern me are the ones who blindly believe the book or movie to be an exact representation of a relationship they want. I live in my case a male dominated relationship by choice but I don't see the talk of consent being as important as it should be. I just have little faith in humanity as a whole to begin with. If people are interested in the acts portrayed I would hope they would seek out information and understanding of themselves as well.

In a social media group I'm in I've had many questions regarding how consent came into play, how I feel about the books/movie and how it works in my relationship. These are questions that should be talked about.

Just because someone starts and is okay with being tied up for example , if they become uncomfortable and say no they are withdrawing consent and should be respected and it doesn't mean they give up the right to say no just because they have consented earlier.

Though in my mutually agreed upon dynamic I gave my one time consent that is not as common but it certainly wasn't something that happened overnight.

TLDR : While I don't think the books promote abuse or any rape culture , etc. I do feel there is a lack of discussion about what consent means in this case a bdsm setting specifically. The more mainstream this becomes the more opportunities for people to be stupid arises however.

Isn't the whole book centered around signing the sex consent contract though?

I was going to respond but I just can't. I have already devoted entirely too much time to a shitty book lol. Suffice it to say I disagree with your view Aks.

From what I understand it's about coerced consent, not of her own desire alone but basically "take it or leave it". In my experience this is rarely how it works in reality. There was extensive discussion for example between myself and my husband before we nailed down anything. There are a few things that he knows he won't do because of the risks to cause mental and emotional damage. While he still could in theory , I chose someone I trust with my life, physical and mental health.

Negotiations and setting expectations are important but it's rarely one sided. Also if the agreement has a, safeword ignoring that alone is completely unacceptable anyway. A safeword means stop so things can be changed or stopped all together.

If you want to get really technical these contracts have no binding legality anyway, a subject that is constantly debated on a website I'm on and their benefit if any. It's basically an outline of what both or multiple parties agree to happen, limits, safeword (if any) and offers no protection to either side. While it can be argued this could be used to "prove" things are consensual there is no way to further prove it wasn't signed under duress.

There are just so many red flags in the book and movie that make me want to scream. Even the most normally intelligent people can be dragged into fantasy time to time. It's just those who can't separate or do their own research that worries me. It's not a how to bdsm manual.
