A possible sighting of Canada’s version of the Loch Ness monster at a lake in British Columbia has stirred up the legend of the sea creature long-rumored to reside there.

A man visiting British Colombia’s Lake Okanagan claims he filmed video of what could only be the elusive monster, known to locals as Ogopogo. The 30-second video shows two long ripples in the water in a seemingly deserted area of the lake.

“It was not going with the waves,” Richard Huls, who captured the scene on camera during a visit to a local winery, told the Vancouver Sun. “It was not a wave, obviously, just a darker color. The size and the fact that they were not parallel with the waves made me think it had to be something else.”

Ogopogo is the Canadian version of Scotland’s famous Loch Ness monster. The first recorded sighting of the alleged creature in Loch Ness was nearly 1,500 years ago when a giant beast is said to have leaped out of a lake near Inverness, Scotland, to eat a local farmer. Since then, the legend has taken on a life of its own through first-person accounts of those who claim to have seen it and in public imagination.

As with Loch Ness, the Ogopogo phenomenon dates back hundreds of years and is believed to have its origins in native Canadian Indian folklore with a creature called N’ha-a-itk. The locals would not cross the area of the lake where they thought the monster resided without an offering to feed the monster if attacked.

Ogopogo is most commonly described as a 40- to 50-foot-long sea serpent. There have reportedly been thousands of sightings of the monster through the years, including a marathon swimmer in 2000 who claimed he saw two large creatures in Ogopogo’s likeness swimming with him at times. The lake has been searched and no concrete evidence of the monster has turned up. Still, the legend of the lake monster lives on.

A Russian historian gruesomely decorated his home with 29 mummified female bodies he dug up from local graveyards and dressed as life-sized dolls, authorities said.

The 45-year-old man, who police released a photo of, but not his name, was arrested last week for desecrating dead bodies and their burial sites, according to the Russian news agency, RIA Novosti.

He reportedly dug up the bodies at cemeteries throughout the city of Nizhny Novgorod, about 250 miles from Moscow, over a two-year period.

Authorities shot video inside the man's home, which showed Moskvin's bizarre collection of corpses, according to The Associated Press.

Each were garbed in bright colored dresses and headscarves, their hands and faces wrapped up in cloth.

Doll-making manuals, plaques from tombstones and maps of local cemeteries were found in his home, police said.

His fingerprints were also found in several burial grounds.

Local media identified the man as Anatoly Moskvin, a well-respected specialist in cemeteries, RIA reported. He also has a PhD in Celtic studies.

As Russian authorities try to identify 29 mummified women "dressed as life-sized dolls" in the home of accused graverobber Anatoly Moskvin, the press is having a field day.

Among today's revelations: Moskvin had detailed graveyard photos and maps in his apartment, and instructions for making the dolls. Shoes in Moskvin's apartment matched footprints in cemeteries. Examiners have not determined whether each mummy doll contains a "full set of remains," or whether Moskvin mixed and matched. And finally, as the BBC reports, Moskvin has long been obsessed with graveyards:

In a 2007 interview with the newspaper Nizhegorodsky Rabochy, Mr Moskvin said he had begun wandering through cemeteries when still a schoolboy.

He claimed to have inspected 752 cemeteries across the region from 2005 to 2007, often walking up to 30km (20 miles) a day.

He said he had drunk from puddles, spent nights in haystacks or at abandoned farms and had once even slept in a coffin readied for a funeral.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's antiquities authority closed the largest of the Giza pyramids Friday following rumors that groups would try to hold spiritual ceremonies on the site at 11:11 A.M. on Nov. 11, 2011.

The authority's head Mustafa Amin said in a statement Friday that the pyramid of Khufu, also known as Cheops, would be closed to visitors until Saturday morning for "necessary maintenance."

The closure follows a string of unconfirmed reports in local media that unidentified groups would try to hold "Jewish" or "Masonic" rites on the site to take advantage of mysterious powers coming from the pyramid on the rare date.

Amin called all reports of planned ceremonies at the site "completely lacking in truth."

The complex's director, Ali al-Asfar, said Friday that an Egyptian company requested permission last month to hold an event called "hug the pyramid," in which 120 people would join hands around the ancient burial structure.

The authority declined the request a week ago, al-Asfar said, but that did not stop concerned Egyptians from starting internet campaigns to prevent the event from taking place.

"It has been a big cause now on Facebook and Twitter for many people to write about," al-Asfar said.

The closure was unrelated to the rumors, he said, adding that the pyramid needed maintenance after the large number of visitors during the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday last week.

The rest of the complex, which includes two other large pyramids, numerous tombs and the Sphinx, remained open Friday, though security appeared to be heavier than usual.

Dozens of police officers and soldiers were posted throughout the complex. Some patrolled on camel-back. One soldier stood next to his machine gun near a souvenir shop selling miniature pyramids.

Speaking by phone from the pyramids after 11:11 had passed, al-Asfar said he'd seen nothing out of the ordinary.

"Everything is normal," he said. "The only thing different is the closure of the Khufu pyramid."

Khufu is credited with building the Giza complex's largest pyramid, now one of Egypt's main tourist attractions. Khufu founded the 4th Dynasty around 2680 B.C. and ruled Egypt for 23 years.

The hunt is on for the source of low level radiation detected in the atmosphere "across Europe" over the past several days, nuclear officials said today.

Trace amounts of iodine-131, a type of radiation created during the operation of nuclear reactors or in the detonation of a nuclear weapon, were detected by the Czech Republic's State Office for Nuclear Safety starting two weeks ago. After the group reported its findings to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Agency released a statement today revealing similar detections had been made "in other locations across Europe."

The IAEA said the current levels of iodine-131 are not high enough to warrant a public health risk, but the agency still does not know the origin of the apparent leak and an official with the agency would not say where exactly it has been detected outside the Czech Republic.

The IAEA said it does not believe the radiation was left over from the nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant in March and the Czech Republic's State Office for Nuclear Safety could only say the source was "likely outside the territory of the [Czech] Republic."

"Anywhere spent nuclear fuel is handled, there is a chance that... iodine-131 will escape into the environment," the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says on its website.

According to the EPA, iodine-131 can get into the environment after leaking from cracked fuel rods in nuclear plants and, when ingested in higher doses, can lead to thyroid problems. This particular type of radiation is relatively short-lived, with an estimated half-life of about eight days.

PETA decides Super Mario 3D Land promotes animal cruelty

PETA is a well-known foundation setup to protect the rights of all animals. However, some of their tactics for doing so are questionable (which other animal rights organization is launching its own porn site?), even if they do end up getting the group a lot of coverage in the press.
Video games seem to be a favorite target for PETA, and you may remember Cooking Mama coming under fire for promoting cooking and eating meat. PETA went so far as to recreate the game online, renaming it Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals.
This week, the group has a new target due to the release of Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS. Apparently, through releasing that game both Nintendo and Mario are promoting animal cruelty due to the use of the Tanooki Tail Power-Suit.
PETA points out the fact that tanuki are raccoon dogs that are skinned alive for their fur. By using fur as a Tanooki suit, Mario is “sending the message” that buying and wearing the real fur is acceptable.
To help get the point across, PETA has drawn Mario in his Tanooki suit holding a racoon’s head with blood dripping all over the floor. You can also play Super Tanooki Skin 2D the game, which puts you in the role of a skinned raccoon performing jumps as you try to catch a flying Mario who is wearing your blood-drenched skin.
At best this is a leap by PETA to associate the game with the cruelty. I bet most players don’t even notice a link between a suit Mario wears in the game and the fur trade. I have never played a Mario game and wanted to go out and kill me some raccoons, either.
While this is sure to get PETA some healthy coverage, as this article demonstrates, I think their efforts would do more good targeting those who actually purchase the raccoon fur in the first place and then the stores that stock it.

The 61cm-long ‘creature’ was allegedly found by Marta Yegorovnam near the flaming wreckage of a crashed UFO beside her summer house in the Russian city of Petrozavodsk.
She claims to have heard a deafening crash one evening in 2009 but when she went outside to investigate, found that ET had not survived.
Ms Yegorovnam then lovingly wrapped the creature in plastic and shoved it in the fridge, not uttering a word to anyone.
The remains have apparently been examined by the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, although this has not been confirmed.
Paranormal writer Michael Cohen said the ‘possibility that this might be a genuine alien should not be discounted’.

Water System Hacked

Hackers gained remote access into the control system of the city water utility in Springfield, Illinois and destroyed a pump last week, according to a report released by a state fusion center and obtained by a security expert.

The hackers were discovered on Nov. 8 when a water district employee noticed problems in the city’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA). The system kept turning on and off, resulting in the burnout of a water pump.

Forensic evidence indicates that the hackers may have been in the system as early as September, according to the “Public Water District Cyber Intrusion” report, released by the Illinois Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center on Nov. 10.

A Miami Gardens transgender woman is facing charges of practicing medicine without a license after police say she injected a patient's rear with everything but the kitchen sink in an illegal cosmetic surgery procedure.

Oneal Ron Morris, 30, was arrested Friday after an investigation by Miami Gardens Police and the Florida Department of Health.

According to police, the victim saw Morris in May and was injected in her buttocks with a substance consisting of cement, "Fix a Flat," mineral oil and super glue.

The amateur incision was then sealed with super glue, police said. The victim was later hospitalized with a serious medical condition as a result of the injections.

Morris, who police say is a man but appears to look like a woman and sports an apparently enhanced rear herself in arrest photos, was being held on $7,500 bond. it was unknown whether she has an attorney.

Police believe there may be other victims of Morris who may be afraid to come forward. They said the victims haven't done anything illegal and shouldn't be afraid to come forward.
