I've reached much the same stance. Not gen-x, not millennial.
Personally, I think anyone young enough to not remember/be raised with the cold war mentality (so 4-6 around the fall of the soviet union in '91),
but old enough to have a number of years of experience in a pre-9/11 world (before PS2/DVDs, widespread broadband internet, google/wikis),
isn't going to fit into either mold.

I hate these generation categories. I'm 32 and they stick me in the same category as 12 year olds? WTF. I grew up in a time of rotary house phones, not mobiles.

These kids have mobiles that are computationally more powerful than all the computers I've ever had bar my current PC put together. I don't even have a functional mobile.

I remember at school the teachers explaining the fall of the Berlin wall to us as a current event...


I think you guys are right as we're a different in-between generation who remembers how it was "before" - before household computing and the web. A generation who remembers what it was like to play in the sun.

Edit: It's worth noting that we've seen incredible change within our relatively short lifetimes so far... it's just that culturally those of us born in the early '80s are nothing like kids born in the 2000s. If anything we're more like our older brothers and sisters born in the '70s.

It does seem a bit weird to lump people across such a wide gap into the same demographic, especially when you consider the difference in tech applications from someone born in 85 and someone born in 98. The 85 baby would have done schooling through high school with almost no internet connectivity, almost no mobile phones, and absolutely no advent of social media or the like (depending on where you live and your income, I guess).

Someone born in 98 and turning 18 this year would have grown up with the internet at their fingertips from the point they could read, cellphones and tablets changing the way we can find out information about the world and really just how we interact with one another on the day-to-day. I think it's pretty ridiculous to say that someone growing up and hitting formative years in the mid nineties will have the same expectations out of life as someone who hit their formative years post-9/11.

The answer is to pirate your movies and watch them in the comfort of your own home. Plus, if your setup isn't ass, you can get people to show up with food and keep the leftovers. The industry has just turned in another record year, with $38.3b taken at the box office, it's practically our duty to keep pirating at this point.

I was born in 87 and I've had a computer and internet every day of my life since I was 6, the good old days of dialup internets. 11/f/cali yo! God I miss those ancient dialup chatrooms and IMing and all the progs Old Geocities/Angelfire/etc. websites were awesome too. Kids these days will never know what it was like being a pioneer on the world wide web.

I was too poor. Don't think we had a comp with internet in the house till around 2000 and that was in the parents room so yeah . Schools didn't really have much access either. Still feel like I'm behind the curve

i had a computer in 3rd grade, i used it to type and print my assignments cos i tried to use "i don't like writing" as an excuse for not doing my homework. my parents are great, haha. we didn't have even dialup internet until '99 and even then i really only used it for a few games, like C&C Tiberian Sun. It wasn't until a few years later, after cable internet became more common, that I really started getting into online stuff, like diablo 2 and, later, FFXI.


i grew up on MS DOS, Windows 3.0, NES, Atari, PBS and my bicycle. I used to ride that fucker everywhere. Was great. Should get a street bike and start doing that again, get in shape.

YES. Played Tiberian and Red Alert a lot when I was younger.

At the time my primary method of buying games was to go grocery shopping with my parents and then keep an eye out for anything that looked interesting at Sam's Club/WalMart. Every now and then I could talk them into going to Gamestop (or whatever it was back then) or Best Buy.

My favorite game doing CQC testing on was Red Alert 2. Only one to get stuck having to try to beat it on hard with less than 5 nights of testing. Was able to get to the second to last level with the Soviets on it. Fuck that moon level.

Gamestop absorbed a bunch of shops under their current umbrella but Electronics Boutique was the one in my area. Everyone knows Toys 'R' Us was the place to get video games, though. Pluck that ticket and pray the guy in the box could find what you wanted.
