Honestly, who gives a fucking shit? Guy has patents, has written books on science, been a head for a scientific society. He's a scientist. I remember he and some other person (forget who) did a bet to see who could have more solar energy in their homes. Guy lives and breaths scientist. This is not some run of the mill dude who decides to observe something before he does it. Labeling Nye a scientist really doesn't broaden the definition all that much.
That's a great response and all but I wasn't actually saying anything about Bill Nye and was only talking about the overly broad definitions being used so I feel you really meant to respond to Blubb
I don't know if he's a scientist really, he's kinda more of a science...
...guy
i can make it clear for yous
if you took the counterpoint in any way, you are a faggot
Jesus I really can't understand you people sometimes. Every time I share my thoughts I'm playing devil's advocate? Wtf? I'm also baffled by the fact that people can't accept that sometimes even stupid people like Sarah Palin are correct about things. Where she fucks up is in the implication that Bill Nye not being a scientist means he's incapable of understanding science or defending it against people who are less informed. Acknowledging that Bill isn't a scientist doesn't make his opinion worthless, and it doesn't change how educated or intelligent he is. Acknowledging that Palin has that point correct doesn't mean her other points are correct, or that she's more intelligent than a box of rocks (hint: she's not). Fuck's sake, people.
Except for the part where Bill Nye is a scientist and Palin isn't right... Not all scientists have to be doing hard research and publishing pier reviewed papers. In fact there are a lot of scientists in the world who are never published and will not be but they are still learning about science studying it and exploring the world from a scientific perspective. Being published and doing research are a very narrow definition of scientist.
Palin is only correct if you accept an extremely narrow definition of scientist.
I'm a scientist at the moment, so I know the 2016 handshake. While I haven't met him personally, a NYC friend has told me that Bill Nye also knows the 2016 handshake. Thus, he's a scientist.
In seriousness, the term "scientist" is assumed rather than bestowed, so there's literally no bar to entry. As long as you're scientifically literate and capable of applying the scientific method, you're a scientist. If Bill Nye had followed up his TV career with interviews that made him seem scientifically illiterate or logically inept, then he wouldn't be a scientist. As it is, he's doing pretty well for himself as both an advocate for and practitioner of science. Thus he is a scientist.
I think I'll stick with the definition as I've understood it my entire life. Scientist is a term for someone's professional life, like lawyer, teacher, etc. I don't accept a definition where people who enjoy watching Mythbusters could call themselves scientists. It's ridiculous.
Real scientists hate mythbusters.
My job title is Scientist 1. All I do is zombie blue collar manufacturing and no research. But I get to wear that spiffy white lab coat every day. But I work in a building with research scientists (mostly bachelors with an MS here and there). They, too, are zombies that do what their bosses (PhDs and occasionally MBAs) tell them to do.
I'm considered an architect but I'm not licensed yet. I guess I'm just an enthusiast that watches HGTV?
If you really want to create such a narrow strange definition for the term scientist at least you can call it "Professional Scientist". But even then there are people whose job titles are literally "Scientist" that don't fit your narrow definition of scientist.
That thing about Mythbusters viewers calling themselves scientists is a great strawman by the way.
FWIW Bill Nye, afaik, has advanced degrees in Mechanical Engineering. That's p. sciencey
Bill will always be cool with me even if he doesn't meet your standard definition of "scientist". One of, if not his greatest contributions to science was him inspiring a generation of children to take an interest in science. Plus one time my buddy was next to him in traffic and my buddy blared "She Blinded Me With Science" out of his speakers and Bill looked over and gave him a thumbs up. Cool dude.
I have a pretty hefty Blubb filter these days. I just scroll til I see other flavors of stupid.
Is this the dumbest idea ever, or am I overthinking this:

New $20 will have Harriet Tubman on the front (fuck ya!)
...back will have Andrew Jackson (wtf?)
"Let's celebrate a woman who escaped slavery and freed several slaves by also putting a slave owner on the same bill."
I looked it up, US Treasure is not even sure why Jackson was ever on the bill, and he was pretty anti-bank.
