The Kentucky mother of an autistic third-grader said she found him outside his classroom stuffed in a duffel bag with the drawstring pulled tight — because he misbehaved.
Sandra Baker said she heard her son, Christopher Baker, calling out to her from inside the bag when she arrived at the school on Dec. 14.
“He was treated like trash and thrown in the hallway,” she told The Associated Press.
The bag was tied so tight that Baker said when she demanded her child be released from the bag, a teacher’s aide struggled for a moment to get him out.
“When I got him out of the bag, his poor little eyes were as big as half dollars and he was sweating,” she told the AP. “I tried to talk to him and get his side of the reason they put him in there, and he said it was because he wouldn’t do his work.”
She told Lex18-TV that her son was upset all night after the incident.
“He was to himself, went to his room, was in there all night, didn’t communicate with anybody,” she said.
Christopher is a student in a special needs program at Mercer County Intermediate School in Harrodsburg, Ky. Officials told his horrified mother that it wasn’t the first time he had been put in the duffel bag, which they described as a “therapy bag.”
“It disturbs me because I don’t know what else they have done to him in forms of discipline that I don’t even know about,” she told the local TV station last week.
The district would not comment, citing privacy laws, other than to say they were investigating.
But the case has sparked outrage across the country.
Lydia Brown, an autism advocate, began a petition to “end abuse of Autistic students in Mercer County, Kentucky.” Two days after it was created on Change.org, it received more than 4,000 signatures.
“As an Autistic individual, I know how it feels to be bullied,” one commenter wrote on the petition. “I think bullying of any kind is just wrong, especially when the bullying is done by a teacher. Teachers are supposed to be there for their students, not torment and bully them.”

I stayed in a Mexican friend's apartment in Kingsburg and was not accosted at all when I walked the half mile down the road to the grocery store. Delightful neighborhood.

FULLERTON – Prosecutors have charged a man in the Christmas weekend killing of his wife.

William Wallace, 30, of Anaheim faces one felony count of murder in the slaying that happened sometime between Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, the Orange County District Attorney's Office said.

If convicted, he faces a possible 25 years to life in state prison.

Wallace is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. His Wednesday arraignment was continued to Jan. 20 at the North Justice Center in Fullerton.

Prosecutors accuse Wallace of inflicting blunt-force trauma to the head of his wife, Zazell Preston, rendering her unconscious.

The victim's two young children from a previous relationship and the couple's 7-week-old baby were in the apartment at the time of the incident, the District Attorney's Office said.

The children are in the care of relatives.

About 9:30 a.m. Christmas Day, Wallace called 911 to report that Preston was in need of medical attention, authorities said.

Anaheim police began investigating the suspicious death of the woman in her 20s Sunday after responding to the 200 block of Laxore Street. Officers found the victim unresponsive in the bed at the home, prosecutors said.

Preston was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Man Killed In Train Accident Sued By Woman His Flying Body Parts Injured
If you die in a horrific train accident, be sure to aim your severed body away from any bystanders. That's the lesson from the sad, bizarre case of Hiroyuki Joho, whom a court has ruled can be sued for injuries caused by his own body parts when he was killed by a train.

When 18-year-old Hiroyuki Joho recklessly ran in front of an Amtrak barreling along at 70 mph in Chicago 2008 to catch a train, a part of his body flew onto a nearby platform, knocking 58-year-old Gayane Zokhrabov to the ground, breaking her leg and wrist. An appellate court just ruled Zokhrabov can sue Joho: ""If you do something as stupid as this guy did, you have to be responsible for what comes from it," said the lawyer who handled the case.

There will likely be no countersuit.

Come with me now on a long journey to a far off island nation about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand - Samoa. Its lush volcanic valleys make it a mostly agricultural nation; it has no military whatsoever; and it shouldn't be confused with its neighbor, American Samoa. Now, if you're tempted to visit, do not plan a celebration there on December 30th. Why? Because that day will simply not exist there. The calendar will jump from the 29th of December to the 31st. What in the world?

It's actually a smart economic decision. You see, Samoa is just 20 miles away from the International Dateline. As the name suggests, it's an imaginary longitude that marks a change in date when we fly, sail or steam over it. That line was created more than a century ago, when it was decided Samoa would be 11 hours behind Greenwich Meantime outside of London; it's three hours behind Pacific Time in Los Angeles.

The theory went that being on a similar time zone to the Americas would benefit trade and commerce for Samoa - but the times, quite literally, are changing. Samoa now does most of its business with its neighbors.

But Sydney, in Australia, is 10 hours ahead of London, and - bear with me on the math here - that means Samoa has been conducting most of its trade with a country that is 21 hours ahead of it. So when it's Friday morning at a Samoan factory, Australian clients are already at the beach on a sunny Saturday. And when the Aussies go back to work on Monday, the Samoans are still at Sunday church, or whatever Samoans do on Sundays.

Come December 29th, that's all going to change. Samoa will leap forward a day, and it will be just three hours ahead of Sydney.

The Woolly Mammoth Returns: Scientists to Clone Ancient Beast Within 5-Years

Five years from now you’ll be able to see a woolly mammoth in the flesh. Scientists, who recently discovered well-preserved bone marrow in a mammoth thigh bone, say that they’ll be able to clone the animal in less than five years.

According to Discovery News, the woolly mammoth cloning project will be a join effort between Russian scientist Semyon Gigoriev, acting director of the Sakha Republic’s mammoth museum, and Japan’s Kinki University. Gigoriev and his team are currently analyzing the marrow, which was extracted from a mammoth femur bone found in Serbia.

The report notes that global warming has been a major blessing since it has thawed ground in Eastern Russia that is usually covered by a permanent layer of perma-frost. Researchers have unearthed several well-preserved bones, including the thigh bone that could bring the woolly mammoth back to life.

Gigoriev’s team and Kinki University will replace the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with the ones they find in the mammoth’s bone marrow cells. This, which has been known by researchers for a long time, will create embryos with mammoth DNA. Discovery Reports that researchers have been looking for undamaged nuclei since the late 1990s, and now, they believe that they have the final ingredient needed to make a woolly mammoth.

The AFP reports that the woolly mammoth has been extinct for about 10,000 years.

LEXINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Do you have change for a million-dollar bill?

Police say a North Carolina man insisted his million-dollar note was real when he was buying $476 worth of items at a Walmart.

Investigators told the Winston-Salem Journal (http://bit.ly/u7ZrEN ) that 53-year-old Michael Fuller tried to buy a vacuum cleaner, a microwave oven and other items. Store employees called police after his insistence that the bill was legit, and Fuller was arrested.

The largest bill in circulation is $100. The government stopped making bills of up to $10,000 in 1969.

Fuller was charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument. He is in jail on a $17,500 bond, and it isn't clear if he has an attorney. He is scheduled to be in court Tuesday.
