There's also the fact that the charges are completely disproportionate to what he did. At best he should've had to maybe pay for the changes to remake the yearbook and issue some kind of apologize. Instead he's getting felony charges on his record and I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to convict him as a sex offender

Considering it's a yearbook photo and yearbooks are typically distributed among minors, I don't think there's anything wrong with the charges in the slightest.

The whole black and white with minors thing is also kind of retarded... it's not like some old man traumatizing little children. These were his classmates his age.

High school ranges from 14-18, give or take a few outliers. The maturity level of someone who is 14 is quite a bit different than that of an 18 year old. I just got done teaching 130 8th graders, so 13-14 year olds, and a lot of them would have felt very unsafe/uncomfortable around someone who felt it was perfectly acceptable to whip his dick out, even if it's just in front of his bros for a laugh.

Hell, I'm 35 and I would feel very unsafe/uncomfortable around someone who felt it was perfectly acceptable to whip his dick out, even for laughs. You might think it's a victimless crime, but it's not. If your job as an educator/administrator is to ensure the safety of all of the students, then part of your job is to ensure that students feel like school is a safe place to be. Having that kind of sexually charged atmosphere with rampant sexual harassment does not make school feel safe to a fairly high portion of your population.

It's bullshit, and this is all bullshit. If seeing the genitalia of a person makes you feel "unsafe", you should seek mental help. You might not like it, and it might make you slightly uncomfortable, but any feelings more severe than that are completely unwarranted. Jesus this puritanical bullshit is infuriating.

This is why we don't allow children to look at National Geographic anymore, and you have to be 18 to access the internet.

I don't remember even having the option to get a yearbook in my high school outside of senior year.

A felony is stupid in this case. A high school student doing stupid pranks because they are stupid. It's also up to the yearbook committee and coordinator to check all the proofs for all this shit. And things still fall through the cracks because it's a damn yearbook with thousands of photos and even some committee members would try and sneak stuff in there. Who didn't do yearbook since it was considered an easy class/extra curricular activity to stuff your college application. Heck, back in my days of HS journalism, we had to submit our proofs to the faculty before publishing. Only thing that we had to change out in an entire year was a caption of someone asleep on a calculus test prep book because the Track coach didn't want her star long distance runner to be the butt of a joke.

Punitive damage I could agree with. Completely ruining someone for life over a stupid teenage prank is going way overboard. Like the day the journalism staff stuffed male porn in our Editor in Chief's clip board. No one got reprimanded when he screamed for dear life. Harmless joke. Laugh about it the next day. Though for context, this was an all male Catholic school. But then again, even with the girls from another campus, we still did porn jokes to each other. Fuck that male porn stuffed book in the high school musical on closing night. Girls got a kick out of it. We all tried our best to stay in character and keep singing while staring at a book full of cocks.

Our stage crew would plaster that stuff on every surface the audience couldn't see. It was impossible to be on stage and not see something.

Being this afraid of the human body is what causes stupid pranks like this to happen in the first place. The extreme prudishness in this country does more harm than help and develops a situation where predators can take advantage.

You need serious help if the human body makes you that uncomfortable.

I can look at dicks until I'm blue in the face. But if a guy of any age exposed himself in front of me I would absolutely feel uncomfortable because I would have no way of knowing what his intentions were. Rapists exist, and I'm allowed to be cautious about that fact. There is obviously a difference between a dick I wanted to see and one I didn't.

Yes I get that this is a photograph, but the fact that a kid thinks it's perfectly okay when we live in a society where people have every right to be afraid of men pulling their dicks out (for obvious reasons) says a lot about him. Maybe it shouldn't be a felony, but he absolutely should have more consequences than a slap on the wrist because that same kid's gonna go to college and do the same thing, and maybe take it even further, because no one told him that this behavior was unacceptable when he was a teenager. If we lived in a society where women didn't have to be afraid of random dudes then this wouldn't even be an issue, but sadly, we do not live in that society.

I disagree with you. Indecent exposure shouldn't be a thing. People shouldn't give any power to the human body. The laws beget the feelings beget the behavior. If it wasn't a crime and people din't react then it wouldn't happen because there would be no thrill. Also seeing a penis is a HUGE leap to get to rapists and rape.

I fully believe that people making the connection between sexuality and nudity so strongly leads to more issues rather than helping them. Having this attitude is a self fulfilling prophesy and helps create the situations and atmosphere that it so vehemently condemns and tries to prevent.

honestly, you should have stopped here. he didn't expose himself in front of you, he exposed himself in a photograph that was put in a yearbook and he did it for laughs. if you can't tell the difference between that and a flasher or a rapist then you have some serious issues you need to work on, and I honestly wish you luck with them, but don't punish this kid for that.

  16. #5796

We do live in a society where women don't have to be afraid of random dudes. If you want to feel fear, then maybe you should move to the Middle East where such feelings are justified. Here, in the good old US of A, your paranoid delusions make you seem crazy.

You're saying that I can't tell from a photograph, but guess what - you can't either. I leave it at that, because it's clear I'm not going to convince any of you. And no, I do not need help nor do I have issues, and it would be super awesome if people would stop telling me that simply because I have a healthy wariness toward strangers. Better safe than sorry, and all that.

Do you think we would be having this discussion if we were in a society where people ran around naked all the time? Do you think that women exposing their breasts to breastfeed in public or even just exposing their breasts to swim the way that men expose their chests would be an issue if people didn't have such body issues? These are not issues by themselves. They become issues because people give nudity power not the other way around.

One time I visited the beach and amongst the people there were several younger woman who were sunbathing with their breasts exposed. I, a cis white hetero-normative male in his late 20s, immediately felt extremely uncomfortable and backed away slowly to my car holding out my can of mace as I did not wish to be sexually assaulted as I did not know their intentions. Rapists exist, and I'm allowed to be cautious about that fact.
