130 million autopilot miles driven so far.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I haven't spent much time looking into Tesla's stuff on autopilot. How is it comparing to Google's? Or are they now the same thing?

Different systems. Tesla's is in "public beta" and therefore is logging hundreds of millions of miles more than Google's. I think Google has a 360 LIDAR system that should be superior to what Tesla is using, from a hardware standpoint. Google just has prototypes though, not implementation in the mass market.

Update: the Tesla owner was watching a Harry Potter movie.

Their hardware and approach is different. Google uses the world map model of autonomy where the car relies on a highly accurate centimeter scale map of an area. With this information the car can drive from one address to another so long as the map is up to date. LIDAR is used to calculate distances to objects to avoid them.

Tesla uses the subsumption model which they first give it the ability to do things on its own such as braking, accelerating, and turning which is needed for the survival of the car, and then give it the conditions on when it should perform these commands. Tesla's use 3 sensor types to make these decisions. One is a forward facing camera near the rear view mirror that reads the lines in the road to keep the car in the lane and reads speed limit signs (it can display the speed limit on one of the screens in the car so the driver is aware of the current speed limit), the second is a radar that sits in the grill that is used to detect cars in front of it, and lastly 12 sensors around the car to detect obstacles which is used for lane changes, car avoidance, and auto parking.

One of the interesting things about autopilot though is that it is constantly learning. When people use AP, the car is constantly sending data back to the cloud. If I remember correctly, when AP first came out cars were going thru turns at more than the suggested speed, but because drivers were taking control and braking, the AP system learned from this and within a week all cars were decelerating properly through turns.

tl;dr - Google works best if the area is already mapped and can get you from point A to point B. Tesla doesn't rely on maps and is simply an advanced cruise control system.

The shitty Florida truck driver who caused the accident claimed that after the car came to a stop he could "hear a Harry Potter movie playing on that TV" which translates from Florida truck driver into reality as something like "he was listening to an audiobook voiced by a British guy", probably.

Is there really any difference between listening to an audio book and watching Harry Potter? Neither is really deserving of ridicule. This guy died only in part because of the auto driving. Even if you're fully paying attention, some dickweed can turn in front of you without leaving you sufficient distance/time to brake or avoid them.

Sure, but if he was watching a movie while driving and so engrossed in it that he didn't even brake at all when a huge 18-wheeler crossed directly in front of him, that's a bit irresponsible.

But he almost definitely wasn't watching a movie. I think the truck driver is trying to make an argument because of the huge touchscreen, which can't play video.

I can't wait till they jailbreak Tesla cars so I can watch Ghostbusters (2016) while my car drives me around.

Well it could be that both the truck driver and tesla driver had assumptions about what would happen. Truck driver makes left hand turn expecting the Tesla to slow down....Tesla driver could have had too much faith in AP and expected the car to decelerate but didnt. Tesla obtains logs from crashes so they will be able to determine if the driver attempted to brake.

Edit: Looks like the movie claim might be indeed be true. Police did find a portable DVD player and a witness other than the truck driver who arrived on the scene claims to have seen a movie playing

Still too early to tell though.

Is it ironic that they'd be walking through a train station?

A 22-year-old Illinois man has been charged with desecrating the American flag after he posted photos on Facebook FB +0.28% along with messages decrying the state of violence and race in the U.S.
I am not a fan of people who burn the flag, BUT I am 100% behind that being a freedom of speech, which it is. So I hope the kid sues and gets mad bucks for it.

It's not actually illegal to burn a flag though, so idk where these prosecutors think they have a leg to stand on.
