There is a Facebook post that goes around every year about the island and their practices. Apparently they can't grow crops on the island due to bad soil so their diet consists mainly of whale meat which is divided by all of the families each year.

Per the article, they have one of the highest standards of living, including access to the same grocery stores the rest of us have. So the killing of whales is done just for tradition at this point. Go get 'em.

Thing is though that the islands are in the Atlantic east of Iceland that are commonly exposed to harsh winter conditions that can cut them off from supplies from time to time. Because of this, it really isn't a tourist destination so in order to generate money they fish for salmon which is their main export at 95%. The whaling is done mainly for food/blubber for the locals and if I remember correctly is highly regulated and sustainable.

Not sure about how regulated or sustainable it is but it doesn't sound like it is done for food/blubber anymore as the locals have access to everything they need without the whaling. Sounds like it is done more for tradition and culture these days. Also if they are cut off from supplies then they are cut off from exporting salmon too.

Who knows though since that article is pretty clearly written with the mindset that what they do is wrong so maybe it is playing up the other things.

Much more info there. They have been regulating this hunt for a LONG time, mostly to try to minimize suffering of the animals. Further, there were almost a million pilot whales in the north atlantic 25 yrs ago. That said, the meat is basically crap now due to high lvls of heavy metals and other things. They just hunt due to hundreds of years of tradition.

Regardless I'm not going to boycott an entire store that sells a huge variety of things from around the world because 1 of their products comes from a place where the people occasionally kill a whale or 2. I'm pretty sure if you traced all the products and materials of everything in a Costco down you could find something the people in that area do that you don't like in just about everything they sell

Fuck the internet has ruined everything. I don't want to know peoples opinions on this shit. It doesn't matter. Also parents kissing their kids on the lips is totally normal but it is also normal for the families that choose to not do that. You know what is not normal? Caring about that interaction between other parents and their kids.

my buddy's girlfriend's friend's daughter (yes, that's some remove) is like ... 4? wanted to give me a kiss, went for the lips, which i'm uncomfortable with, so i made a game of it, over-acting the "MMMMMMMMUA" sound and moving around, then kissed her on the forehead.

personally, i'm not comfortable with kissing in general, except with my GF and sometimes I kiss my mom on the cheek or head. i'm okay with kissing kids on the cheek or head... but kissing on the lips is far too intimate to me. but i aint gonna judge anyone else. different families are different.

You'd be amazed at what people get pissy over. When my friends had their second baby, they did some traditional baby pictures, in which said baby was naked. Took it to the drug store to be developed (this was about 15 years ago) and the guy refused to give them the pictures saying it was child porn. People are fucking pants on head retarded over the stupidest shit sometimes.
