I learned to drive a manual pickup truck around age 8 to aid my grandfather in hunting deer. I am old enough to have ridden 3 wheelers before they were banned, and can confirm that they were insanely unsafe due to the fact that a cousin of mine literally hit a root the wrong way and it ended with me being dragged across the ground, leaving a bruise from my knee to my hip, as well as the engine housing coming to rest on my calf, leaving a significant burn.

That being said, ATVs are significantly safer these days, with roll bars and seatbelts. Blaming a family for a freak accident is pretty dumb.

That's the times I grew up in, multiple broken arms, broken leg, almost ripped my big toe clean off my foot and kept going back for more, didn't make my mom a bad parent.

Kid was wearing her seatbelt, accidents happen. I got nieces and nephews who've been riding ATVs since they were 6, there's always an inherent risk with motorized vehicles. As a parent you can't hover over your children on a 24/7 basis.

First 8 is plenty old to drive an ATV imo second she drove into a lake so the safety equipment actually trapped her underwater and was the issue. There was a roll bar, netting, seat belt etc. that made it hard for her to get out. If it had been one of the old school open top no seat belt ATV's then she could have just swam away.

My point is that sometimes shit happens no matter how careful and safe you are being.

My mom started teaching me to drive at around 8. I grew up in a rural area and being able to get around was helpful to be safe so that I could go get help in case of an emergency.

I grew up driving things around that I shouldn't have. Same with my wife, though the things she drove were actually more dangerous. I'd drive around in a bobcat or a mower or something. Her dad had dump trucks, a bulldozer, and a "field car" that her and her sisters would drive around the fields.

I get what you're saying, 8 years old is young and they probably couldn't make the decisions they had to in the amount of time they had to be able to avoid driving into the lake. If they were older they may have been able to make a better decision and avoid dying. Thing is, this could happen to anyone. It's terrible that they were so young, and that's the main draw for the article, but it could happen to an adult just the same.

True story: Family friend was snowmobiling on a frozen lake with a group of other family/family friends. Lost control of his snowmobile and ran straight into a dock, decapitating him. It was his house everyone was at, they were his snowmobiles. He was familiar with the area and the equipment, but it still happened. Sometimes, no matter what, you just can't prepare for this type of shit.

Not like she drove straight into a lake. She swerved to avoid a drainage ditch and overcorrected herself causing her to go into the lake.

Maybe they live really close to the hospital? Or maybe the ambulance was stationed nearby. Ambulances don't always hang out at the hospital sometimes they park at various points in their territory to improve response time.

Not all ambulances are stationed at hospitals, least not up here anyways. Less then 2 min from my house is an ambulance bay, there's no clinic, no hospital, no FD, just an ambulance bay where they get dispatched out of. It's 30 seconds from 2 major roads that run North/South and 1 major highway, smart planning.

here we have medical transport companies that respond and they have a few offices where they base out of and sometimes I've seen them just park in areas for awhile I assume to be in certain areas for calls
