ATVs weigh on the order of 400-800lbs. Adults aint exactly in much of a better position to help themselves out if shit goes wrong. Just this summer I helped get my buddy's dad out from under his ATV when it slipped off a trail he drives almost every day and fell on his leg. He was fine, but there was no fucking way he was getting that shit off himself alone. Took three other adults to get it sorted out.

My point is, the level of risk inherent in an activity flattens out with age, before eventually increasing again. It's dangerous to have young children do X, but once you get to be about age Y it becomes about as risky for you as it is for an adult. For ATVs, that level of risk flattens out pretty young, but the baseline level is still pretty high. ATVs are inherently not safe vehicles to operate. If you use them for their intended purpose (all-terrain travel) they are dangerous because the activity is dangerous. If you use them for "safer" things like transport on roads, they are ill-suited to the task and therefore dangerous. Personally, I would not let my hypothetical children use them at all, and have no interest in getting one myself. If I wanted a vehicle for those "safer" activities, I would buy one designed for that purpose.

The only reason it seems worse for kids is because it's more tragic and makes the news when it happens to kids.

My point is, at 8 years old you have less experience to draw from when faced with an oh-shit situation. I'd be willing to bet on an adult being able to handle the same situation better than most 8 year olds, generally speaking of course. I don't have an exact age for when I'd be comfortable letting a youngin ride a motor vehicle solo, but a 3rd grader is def not past that age.

Really depends on the kid. We put way too much value in how many days since you exited the womb compared to demonstrated maturity and skill with said operation. But in the end it's really up to the parents (within reason of course. At some point it becomes fairly clear negligence) If you don't want your kid doing it sure don't let them. But if other people do whatevs man.

If a kid can take and understand instructions they are good enough to ride an atv in my book as 9 times out of 10 them messing up only means they are falling off of it. I would be far more skeptical of letting a kid ride a horse personally and that shit is beyond commonplace here.

Idk, overcorrecting from a swerve is something most adults can't handle themselves, everyday adults are rolling SUVs as a result of overcorrecting.

And let's be honest here, as a kid if there's something you really find fun and your parents tell you no, you're going to find a way to do it anyways(least me and everyone I knew anyways), so better to be in the supervision of an adult.

Redneck Ohio reporting that ATV accidents aren't all that uncommon, and many don't even get reported to the point you'd hear about an ambulance call or whatever. Most of the time it's just about deaths or severe injury. Nonetheless, you'll still get broken bones or kids going to classes the next day thinking their folks beat them up or something. Nephew fucked up his jaw at one point and my niece banged her hip pretty good in the past, too. And you can damn well bet they'd still tell you they could handle a vehicle.

The whole, "They'd just do it anyway!" argument falls flat for me since this isn't like sneaking a cigarette or stealing a candy bar. An adult somewhere would've had to have purchased the vehicle, and if kids are getting access without their knowledge/supervision, I'd say it's double fail on both the owner's part and not knowing who your kids are hanging out with, and thus knowing such a thing is even around. In the end, it's hard enough getting them to wear a helmet, let alone other protective gear. Peer pressure's a bitch and bad decisions will be made even without catastrophic consequences.

It's not much different than our town having issues with people using golf carts for basic transit, or more accurately, kids under 16. They run stop signs. They leave the things in the middle of the road. They just plain don't know the laws because they weren't required to get a license to operate, and thus all the testing that involved. It's only a matter of time before one of these morons gets t-boned coming out of a blind turn, as we've had a few near-hits already.

Not to say there aren't kids who can use them responsibly, but it's much safer to assume they can't. Nor can I bring myself to say they have much practicality. Get the fuckers a bike and call it a day.

An 8 year old is probably on a 50-75cc ATV that is at most 250 lbs and red lines at 20 mph. Shit is going to happen.

Now it would be irresponsible to have an 8 year old on a 200cc 400lb+ ATV. I wouldn't even think their legs could hit the gear shift if it's a semi-auto.

TL;DR--Lady gets drunk at beloved local Mexican restaurant, climbs on a statue of a donkey that the restaurant has on display, she falls off and breaks her back, now is suing the restaurant. Also, she is being represented by Morgan & Morgan, an infamous law firm that everyone in Florida would recognize from their advertising campaigns.

Wisconsin students demand free tuition for black students

Black students should be offered free tuition and housing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison because blacks were legally barred from education during slavery and university remains out of reach for black students today, the student government said Wednesday.

The Associated Students of Madison said in a resolution that students from suburban high schools are overrepresented. The group said consideration of ACT and SAT scores in applications restricts opportunities for the poor and thus upholds "white supremacy."
Yep, throw out those test scores that show how much you managed to learn, that will make for good entry requirements for for college students.
