On Wednesday, Sophos antivirus products did something very wrong: they started detecting false positives. The company has since fixed the issue, but only on Thursday did it become clear what the fiasco was all about: the Sophos software was detecting its own binaries as malware.

Here’s what happened. Earlier in the day Sophos warned its customers in a blog post of the following problem:

Some Sophos customers have reported detections today of Shh/Updater-B. Sophos would like to reassure users that these are false positives and are not a malware outbreak, and apologises for any inconvenience.

Sophos then offered its customers instructions on what to do based on their configuration of its security solution. If your automatic updating system was working, it looked like the issue would fix itself as the software grabbed the latest updates. False positives happen, so I wasn’t too surprised. If anything, it was great to see Sophos get on top of the issue so quickly.

Yet there were cases where updates weren’t being delivered, and the company of course offered steps to perform workarounds. That should have sent alarm bells ringing, as the reason the updates weren’t working was because “files in the warehouse are failing to be decoded as they are being falsely detected as Shh/Updater-B.”

Yes, that’s right, the company’s product was categorizing parts of itself as a threat. The company also warned its corporate customers of something that I should have picked up on immediately: “Please double check your SAV policy under cleanup; You want to ensure your secondary option (when cleanup is not available or does not work) to be set to ‘deny access’ and not delete or move.”

I’ve heard of antimalware products detecting critical Windows components as malware and rendering computers unbootable, but this is arguably more mind boggling. Not only was Sophos’ detecting itself as malware, it was moving or deleting said components and effectively castrating itself.

This problem wasn’t officially confirmed until later in the day, in a Sophos Advisory last updated on Thursday: “An identity released by SophosLabs for use with our Live Protection system is causing False Positives against many binaries that have updating functionality.”

Again, the kicker is at the end:

In the case that the ‘Anti-Virus and HIPS’ policy has been set to delete files if they are unable to be cleaned up it will be necessary to re-protect these endpoints as certain Sophos binaries required for updating may have been removed.

Remember: no security company has perfect track record though, so don’t let this one issue scare you away completely. You’re allowed to laugh, however.

Secret revealed: Ohio woman unknowingly married father

(CNN) -- It was a dark secret. The kind that destroys lives, devastates families and decimates faith.
Nobody shared it with Valerie Spruill while her husband was alive. For years after his death, she heard bits of the story. It was something about an absentee father, something about her husband.
None of it made sense, she said. That's not until her uncle finally told her what no one else had: She had unknowingly married the father she never knew.
"It is devastating. It can destroy you," Spruill told CNN late Thursday by telephone. "It almost did."
Spruill, 60, of Doylestown, Ohio, went public with her story this month, first published in the Akron Beacon Journal, with the hopes that it would help others facing what seem like insurmountable problems.
It's a story that has gone viral, attracting attention as faraway as Australia and India where the questions are always the same, she says: How could that happen?

It's a question that Spruill said she has been grappling with since she first learned the truth in 2004, six years after her husband Percy Spruill died.
"I don't know if he ever knew or not. That conversation didn't come up," she said. "I think if he did know, there is no way he could have told me."
She confirmed that her husband was indeed her father through a DNA test, hair taken from one of his brushes.
The aftermath of the secret was devastating emotionally -- and physically, Spruill suffered two strokes and was diagnosed with diabetes.
All of it, she believes was brought on by learning the family secret.
"Pain and stress will kill, and I had to release my stress," Spruill said. "I'm just telling the story to release my pain."
She has a deep, abiding faith in God, who she believes has guided her through the experience -- and others that have shaped her life.
"You have to have faith," she said. "If God brought me this far, he's not going to leave me now."
Spruill met and married her husband-father in Akron and settled in Doylestown, a working class suburb of about 2,300.
It was her second marriage. Spruill was a nice man, a good provider. He was kind to her three children from her previous marriage.
"We had a good life," she said.
She initially struggled with anger, with hating Spruill for what happened.
But therapy taught her what happened wasn't her fault. Her faith taught her to forgive.
Initial response to her story has been mixed: "More positive than negative," she says.
In recent days, she has been in contact with a couple who found out after they were married that they were brother and sister.
They told her, she said, that her story is helping them deal with their own experience.
"They are trying to be friends now," Spruill said.
Others, though, have been less kind.
"They've said things like 'Some secrets should stay secrets,'" she said. "I can't do anything about what they think. I just know what I think. God is always mighty, and he teaches you to tell the truth no matter what."
Spruill knows not everybody tells the truth. It's a lesson she learned as a child the hard way.
By all accounts, Spruill's mother got pregnant as a teenager while dating her then 15-year-old father.
She was 3-months-old when she was sent to live with her grandmother and grandfather, who she initially believed as she grew up was her father.
Spruill said at about age 8 or 9, she discovered that the woman who often visited the house was not a family friend but her mother.
But nobody, she said, talked about her father.
There's nobody left to give her the answers about her husband-father. Her mother, Christine, died in 1984. Her grandparents have long since passed. So, too, have a number of Percy Spruill's relatives.
Spruill knows her mother worked as a prostitute and even got caught up in 1980 high-profile corruption scandal surrounding James Barbuto, a probate judge who was convicted of intimidating investigators and gross sexual imposition for attacking a courthouse clerk in his chambers.
"My mother showed me lots of love. All said and done, I have no regrets in my life at all," she said.
She believes she has siblings or half-siblings from Spruill's previous relationships, including the one with her mother.
She said she wants to find them and let them know they are not alone.
Spruill, herself, has three children and eight grandchildren. She struggled with telling her children that the man they believed was their step-father was their grandfather.
A therapist "advised me to tell my kids," she said. "I told them about two years ago. They are remarkable. They are handling it better than I am."
In recent days, shortly before the news broke, she also told her grandchildren.
"They have been so supportive. They are telling me they love me, telling me they will do whatever I need," she said.
In her spare time, since retiring from the accounting department where she worked for 34 years at Goodyear, she has been writing down her story with the hopes of publishing it.
"I thank God that he gave me a chance to live through all of this," she said. "It is nothing short of a miracle that I'm still here. I want people to know that they can survive something like this."

Man who cooked and served his genitals is handed over to prosecutors

A man who admits cooking and serving his own severed genitals to paying diners has been handed over to prosecutors on an allegation of indecent exposure, police said.

The police sent their case against the 23-year-old man and three other people who helped organize the event to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office, they said Tuesday.

They did not identify by name any of the suspects.

The police are not pursuing charges for dishing out the genitals as Japan has no law against cannibalism.

Court case may define what a "mother" is

To realize her lifelong dream of becoming a mother, Cindy Close and a longtime friend used in vitro fertilization to get pregnant. Neither was married, and both wanted to be parents. She expected to raise the children, and he would be a part-time father figure supporting the family while living his own life.

After giving birth to twins in July, Close said, Marvin McMurrey shocked her by saying she was just a surrogate, demanding custody and revealing he is gay.

Now, the courts will determine what rights Close has as she struggles to define, legally speaking, what it means to be a mother.

"There has never been a case in Texas quite like this one," said Jim Paulsen, a professor at South Texas College of Law. "It combines three or four of the strangest areas of Texas family law all in one package. I'm glad I'm not the judge."

McMurrey has custody of the children, who are living with his boyfriend. According to Close, McMurrey does not live at the home.

McMurrey filed a lawsuit in August asking that a judge declare he is the father and that Close was a surrogate, despite presenting no written agreement or contract.

That ruling, according to Close and her attorneys, would mean that the children will have no legally recognized "mother."

"If Marvin gets his way, the only four people who will have ever walked this earth without a mother would be Adam, Eve and these twins," said Close's lawyer, Grady Reiff. "What they're trying to perpetuate is pretty unheard-of in this state."

He said the law in Texas is well-settled.

"It's our position that a woman who give birth is the mother, unless there is a (surrogate) agreement," Reiff said. Close is counter­suing for child support, as well as for custody.

Attorneys for McMurrey and his partner, Phong Nguyen, declined comment and said their clients would not comment on the situation.

Typical surrogate contracts are defined by statute. A surrogate is impregnated with a donor's eggs that have been fertilized, usually by the intended father's sperm. The intended mother's eggs are not used and she does not carry the child, Paulsen said, but she is the "mother" because of the agreement.

In this case, Close said, the doctor recommended she use donor eggs to lower the risk of birth defects because she was 47 when she was impregnated, not because she was a surrogate.

Paulsen said McMurrey obviously is the father, but the case is rife with legal issues.

"The father is arguing a very technical legal position," Paulsen said, "but it's one of those cases that you hope the judge will be able to look at more than just preliminary technical matters."

He said the courts aren't often asked to determine who a child's mother is, because it is determined either by DNA or intent in a written contract.

"It is very unusual to see a case where maternity is in question," said the professor. "In this case, the woman admits she is not biologically related, but says she always intended to be the mother."

Typically, Paulsen said, the surrogate agrees in advance that she will not be the mother, and the intended father and mother are spelled out by contract.

However, he said, Texas law does not exclude other arrangements for surrogates, an issue the courts may take up in this case.

Another issue that might be a factor is that the intended parents have to be married for a surrogacy to be a valid contract in Texas.

Same-sex marriage is not legal in Texas and is not recognized by the state.

The case is expected to be heard Monday in state District Judge Bonnie Hellums' court.

Since the prematurely born twins went from the hospital to Nguyen's home, where the nursery is set up, Close gets to see them for two hours a day on weekdays and four hours on Sunday.

Watched during visits

She said small cameras have been set up to watch her, and she is not allowed to use her phone or take pictures of the children. She also is not allowed to breast-feed the children, so she is pumping and freezing breast milk to feed them if she regains custody.

"This was not a surrogacy, so it never occurred to me that I would ever need a written agreement," Close said of the lack of any documentation. "If anything, I thought he would lose interest because I didn't expect him to be a very involved father."
