http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21236690Cats are one of the top threats to US wildlife, killing billions of animals each year, a study suggests.
The authors estimate they are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually.
Writing in Nature Communications, the scientists said stray and feral cats were the worst offenders.
However, they added that pet cats also played a role and that owners should do more to reduce their impact.
The authors concluded that more animals are dying at the claws of cats in the United States than in road accidents, collisions with buildings or poisonings.
The domestic cat's killer instinct has been well documented on many islands around the world.
Felines accompanying their human companions have gone on to prey on the local wildlife, and they have been blamed for the global extinction of 33 species.
But their impact on mainland areas has been harder to chart.
To find out more, researchers from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service carried out a review of studies that had previously looked at the predatory prowess of cats.
Their analysis revealed that the cat killings were much higher than previous studies had suggested: they found that they had killed more than four times as many birds as has been previously estimated.
Birds native to the US, such as the American Robin, were most at risk, and mice, shrews, voles, squirrels and rabbits were the mammals most likely to be killed.
Dr Pete Marra from the SCBI said: "Our study suggests that they are the top threat to US wildlife."
The team said that "un-owned" cats, which they classified as strays, feral cats and farm cats, were killing about three times as many animals as pet cats. However, they said pet cats were still killing significant numbers of animals, and that their owners should do more to limit the impact.
Dr Marra said: "We hope that the large amount of wildlife mortality indicated by our research convinces some cat owners to keep their cats indoors and that it alerts policymakers, wildlife managers and scientists to the large magnitude of wildlife mortality caused by cat predation."
A spokeswoman for the animal welfare charity the RSPCA said that a properly fitted collar and bell could reduce a cat's success when hunting by at least a third.

http://nyc.barstoolsports.com/random...medium=twitterA preschool is shutting down after allegations of sexual activity between students were reported. Richard McCarthy says his 4-year-old son received oral sex from a 5-year-old girl several times as a student at First Lutheran Church of Carson School, according to ABC 7. At least one other boy at the school reported that the girl had done the same thing to him at the school in Carson, California. McCarthy told ABC what his son told him: “It went down in the classroom, it went down in the bathroom and it went down out on the playground.” Now McCarthy and the parents of three other students are filing a lawsuit against the school and church, alleging that their students weren’t being adequately monitored. The suit, which the attorney says will be filed tomorrow, claims that there were times when school aides were literally sleeping on the job. “It all boils down to a lack of supervision,” attorney Greg Owen told ABC News. “There were times when teachers would let aides in the room for hours at a time to watch the kids. During naptime, the aides would be sleeping and the children would have been molesting each other during this time.” The school announced that it is closing next Friday, and it gave parents two weeks’ notice. ”The two boys that have been introduced to this feeling that they don’t know how to process are still looking for it, and trying to make it happen,” McCarthy told ABC 7. He added, “There’s no way I can just take him to another school and be that parent that just lets a predator loose. How else do you explain it?”

HOW?http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-21345347Two teenagers whose fingers were cut off in a game of tug-of-war at a school in California are awake and alert after surgery, a medical official says.
But it is not clear if doctors have been able to reattach the boy and girl's fingers.
The two, both aged under 18, were participating in a lunchtime game of tug-of-war at South El Monte High School near Los Angeles on Monday.
Authorities say the students lost four fingers each on their right hands.
In addition, the girl lost her left thumb, they said.
There was a discrepancy with the account of the sheriff, who said the girl lost three fingers from her right hand and two fingers on her left.
The rope was wrapped around the students' hands when it snapped, cutting off their fingers, a fire official told NBC News.
"Somehow they got their hands tied up on the rope," he said.
It is not known how many others were competing in the game.
Meanwhile, the school district superintendent said that classes would continue on Tuesday, and counselling would be available to pupils.
Accidents like this have happened before. In 2008, a girl lost four fingers in Minnesota, but they were successfully reattached.
In Colorado in 2007, two students partially severed their hands in a tug-of-war.

A Georgia store clerk is facing charges after being accused of spanking a customer's child with a belt.
The 8-year-old boy admits to throwing something at the woman, but only after she called him a name.
"It's just heartbreaking me that it happened two days before my birthday, it's just, I don't like it. It happened two days before my birthday."
Logan Ivey says what he doesn't like...is how he ended up spanked at the Dollar General store.
"So I walked down this aisle and I seen the lady. She started calling me a demon, so I said 'I'll show you bad' and I picked up a cookie and I threw it at her. So I tried to hide behind the counter and somehow she found me and started whipping me and I didn't have nowhere to go."
Ivey says the clerk hit his back with a belt.
"I felt like I had five needles sticking in me, then it really hurt. I was screaming Momma."
Wrightsville police chief Paul sterling says from the footage they have...
"It wasn't a spanking, it was more or less a beating than a spanking the way she was hitting him, you know? I don't know how to explain it. It just - I don't even like to think about it."
"And I was crying real bad because she had actually hurt me. When I had actually got up from when she stopped whipping me my pants were actually a little bit warm."
While the video of what happened inside the Dollar General hasn't been released...Ivey's family says it would provide more answers.
"I just wish everybody could see the video because everybody makes comments about what it should be and what they should have done as far as the parent and all that, but if they seen the video it would be a lot different, you know, because it shows how many times she really hit him and how bad it was."
Logan's father describes his son as a typical boy.
"I mean he likes to play. You have to get onto him just like any other kid, but he didn't deserve to be beat with no belt like that by nobody else."
"It felt real real painful. Nobody should have that kinda torture to them. It really hurt."
I dislike testimonials by kids. They are so scripted by the parents it hurts. Obviously the whole thing was wrong, bitch deserves some shit. I have very little tolerance for kids, but hitting someone else's kids is on par with kissing your 65 year-old boyfriend in public. You just don't do it.
I wish I could agree, cause it's very true, but this is 'Murika and we have the itchiest litigation finger ever.
Normally i would not condone child abuse, but after working at walmart for 6 months back when i was a teenager, I honestly believe some children and their parents need a good beating. Seriously, some of the stuff i witnessed and had to put up with started my hatred for humanity.
Hey guys, any time you see someone doing something you don't like, just take off your belt and smack them around a little.
Where exactly was this kids parents if the clerk could continue to beat him? I have a feeling there is a beginning to this story we haven't heard yet. Based on what I've seen in retail, the kid was most likely unsupervised, running around, opening stuff, and making a huge mess. The clerk told him to stop and that is when he threw something at her.
