    Woozie

You are seriously the only person that gives a shit BUT FUCK Y'ALL

Picked up an open box Yamaha KX61 today at GC for $150 trading in my old synth and an audio interface I'd never touched (made $60 too, not mad) and holy fucking shit I am so goddamn happy with my Steinway Dark right now

as soon as we can get Omnisphere working shit is ON

are you still using Synthology Ivory? I tried setting it up on your recommendation but some of the .iso's were corrupted and I'm wondering if I should sit through the download again

You probably shouldn't bother downloading it again. I don't have the time to explain why because I'm about to go. It's really tricky getting it to work, and if we can't get yours to work I'll just send my discs to you. I'll explain more when I get home.

In the meantime, see if one of these updates can fix your problem:

    Okay, I'm back.

What version of Synthogy did you download? I'm assuming it's before the ilok key was required, otherwise you would have never been able to get it registered.

When are you getting the error? It sounds like you're getting it during installation. I had to download this three times before I found a version that would actually install. The version that worked for me was on Demonoid. If you search "Synthogy Ivory", there's a 32gb file. I think that's the one I downloaded, but I'm not sure. I have the entire thing still saved onto my computer as well as burned onto discs. You can either try downloading that one or I can send you the files or the discs.

Even after installation it still may not work. It didn't work for me. I was always able to use it once, and then if I tried to use it again, I'd get errors. I literally had to reinstall it every time I used it. Also, I couldn't use any presets or make my own. When I downloaded that update in the link I posted earlier, it fixed my problem.

Can I get a demo of Omnisphere when you get it working? We definitely need to collaborate on something once I no longer suck at all things musical, if that day ever comes.

I've been thinking about getting a midi controller. I used to just use my digital piano since most of the songs I made were just piano. Now I'm in desperate need of at least a mod wheel and maybe a few programmable knobs and faders. I just don't know how much I'm willing to spend on a controller. The one I've been looking at costs over 500 dollars, which is way overboard for my needs, so I can't justify spending that much considering the amount I'll use it and the fact that I need really need it that much. I'm just hoping I hit the lottery or mug Wop sometime soon.

Thank you very much; unfortunately it was a problem with even installing the damn thing, a couple of the thirty thousand .iso's were borked, but we're not sure if it was a matter of a corrupt original download or a corruption from transferring it.

I'm very, very pleased. I had the 88-key version a while ago, fully weighted and gorgeous, but that was lost in a shitty situation. Had been looking at a MIDI controller for a long while to replace it, and unfortunately synth companies have realized they can charge just about as much for a controller as they could an actual synth, which is bullshit. The KX series was discontinued by Yamaha for reasons I've yet to ascertain, which made it even harder. I'd been looking at a Roland A-500Pro and at the Akai MPK49 (which is pretty much the only thing on the market for less than $400 with aftertouch).

The problem is that controllers right now seem to be based entirely on how much shit can you assign from your DAW to the buttons on the controller, which is great I guess, but not really high on my priority list, I'm really more concerned with having a thing with decent keys that I can play my VSTs with. So yeah, walking into the music store and seeing the 61-key version of what I'd wanted originally was a fucking godsend.

The keys are semi-weighted, but I'd take semi-weighted yamaha keys over anything M-Audio has shit out any fucking day.

Eee! Sorry, you replied while I was replying and then we were REPLY FRIENZ.

According to the boy who knows all of this shit, we evidently still have all of the .iso's on a harddrive somewhere, so we can try reinstalling, so maybe I can apply that patch and get it to go.

Omnisphere was kind of the same deal, huge fucking six-disk download, then you have to torrent a bunch of updates (which I'm doing right now) to get it to function in anything other than demo mode. Unfortunately the price of getting a much-needed computer update was realizing I didn't have a lot of my install files for my go-to VSTs, so I spent most of last night reconfiguring EWSL SO Silver and now I'm trying to patch Absynth and yeah. I scanned my VST list and just sighed, I got a bit add-happy there for awhile. If I can get Omnisphere working I'll see if we still have all the libraries and installs for it and see if I can get that to you.

I was thinking about your digital piano yesterday actually, lol; the physical Guitar Center I went to was pretty light on anything that wasn't M-Audio shit. Honestly if you're happy with the key feel of your piano I wouldn't fuss too much with a controller, since I think for you to get the kind of feel you're looking for you're going to be shelling out at least $700. The controller market is pretty much cornered by laptop producers who just want to one-finger tap out a bass line or whatever for Ableton Live, and that's fucking great, but they manufacturers gauge you for anything resembling quality.

Yeah, that's the problem I'm having. I need a controller that feels and plays like a piano. Almost every midi controller I touch feels like crap. M-Audio's controllers have a reputation for being cheaply made and for breaking, and the few I played on feel terrible (even with 88 weighted keys). With the price I'll end up paying for a controller I want, I'd be better off just buying a digital piano with a mod wheel. I wont get knobs or sliders but I'll at least get a better quality product with great onboard sounds. I spend more time just playing the piano than using my DAW, so I can't really justify spending a lot on a controller when I already need a new digital piano. I've already been thinking about shelling out a grand on a new digital piano when I get to my REU this summer anyways, and if that happens I definitely wont be buying any new toys for a while. I hate spending lots of money.

What you're looking at with controllers is basically if it's small enough to fit on your desk, then it would be worth getting something that you can map to your DAW and use it to adjust sliders and fiddle woogits and itemize your deductions, since it'll save you desk space. Unfortunately, anything small enough to fit on your desk is going to have 25 shitty synth keys, at the most 49. I think the only advantage to a dedicated controller is most of them are USB, and with that you cut down latency like, hojillions much. But nothing has weighted keys under a full 88-key board.

If you still want to go with it, like I said the Roland A-500Pro looked really, really nice, and the MPK49 had actually pretty decent key weight, I was surprised. I've read a lot about people liking the Novation Nova MK II controllers, but I haven't touched one so I can't verify. A lot of these controllers are also being marketed to specific DAWs (or at least pushed towards, I only think one or two are exclusive). The KX series was supposedly geared towards Cubase users, but since I'm not interested in mapping buttons, this doesn't really affect me. I plugged it in, downloaded drivers, and FL Studio was like OH I SEE YOU HAVE A KEYBOARD, NICE.

Just seriously, don't let anyone EVER talk you in to buying an M-Audio board. They are so fucking awful I'm actually feeling a little inarticulate about how bad they are. They feel worse than the cheapest casio keyboard-with-speakers to play. Yes, they're priced really attractively, but if you look at used listings they are absolutely dominated by people trying to offload these things. NEVER BUY M-AUDIO, FUCK YO' PROTOOLS

The Novation MK II was one of the controllers I was looking at (the 61 key version. I don't think they have an 88 key version). It doesn't feel as good as a piano though, and the keys aren't fully weighted. It also has mixed reviews (I've heard bad things about its durability).

I almost considered buying an M-Audio Oxygen 88. However, M-Audio sort of ruined their reputation with me with that retarded ProKeys 88, AKA the worse digital piano ever made. I sort of gave them the benefit of the doubt by noting that they're more of a midi controller company and not really a digital piano company. I would think their midi controllers would be better since that's kind of their thing to do (though I have played around with their controllers a bit but never liked the feel). Based on reviews (which says they're cheap and break easily or have weird/annoying bugs, etc), and now based on what you say, I guess buying one really is a bad idea. I think I'm just not going to buy a controller for now. Or if I do, I"ll buy a small one just for the knobs and sliders, and continue to use a digital piano for the actual playing.

Oh, and speaking of M-Audio, apparently it's not just their controllers that are cheap and full of bugs. I have an M-Audio Midi to USB interface that I really hate. I had to return a few because they didn't work. Turns out, M-Audio had shipped out a bunch that didn't work a few Decembers ago, and I just happen to buy two of the defective versions. Now that I finally have a working version, it randomly doesn't work sometimes and the drivers are a pain to use. Some people complain that the drivers are screwing up their computer and making them reformat. That's never happened to me though.
